Amendments to Aboroginal Peoples Act nearing completion, says Zahid
"Insya-Allah, it will be finalised by September at the latest and tabled in Parliament in March 2026," said Ahmad Zahid, who is also Rural and Regional Development Minister, during the ministry's monthly assembly here Tuesday (July 1).
In March, Ahmad Zahid said that the proposed amendments aim to improve several key areas affecting the Orang Asli, including land issues, infrastructure, education, housing and economic development.
He said the Act is set to be amended for the first time in over 70 years, with several aspects under consideration, particularly concerning land or roaming areas, due to disputes between the Orang Asli community, private landowners and state governments.
The last amendment to Act 134 was made in 1967, and the Act was reviewed in 1974.
Meanwhile, Ahmad Zahid also called for the expansion of high-impact agricultural initiatives through the Agrotek Wilayah project under the Central Terengganu Development Authority (Ketengah).
He said the smart farming approach for fertigation chili cultivation has the potential to increase national productivity and income levels.
"So far, 16,000 polybags have been planted across 1.6ha of land by four participants. I believe, with proper guidance and appropriate technology, this project has the potential to produce 96,000kg of chili with an estimated annual revenue of RM576,000," he said.
In addition, Ahmad Zahid urged Ketengah to spearhead the transformation of Kenyir Lake tourism through the Desa Kirana initiative and position it as an iconic destination contributing to the success of Visit Malaysia Year 2026.
"I also want Kolej Ketengah to move beyond borders and work closely with the Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara) to enhance the expertise of its instructors, especially in the field of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), so that the quality of education and training can be raised to a higher level," he added.
Ketengah, a statutory body under the Rural and Regional Development Ministry, has been in operation for 52 years and has spent RM1.7bil during that time to implement various programmes and projects aimed at regional development and improving community well-being. - Bernama

BANGI: The Gig Workers Bill, a pioneering legislation designed to safeguard gig economy workers in Malaysia, is expected to be tabled in Parliament by August or September, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi announced today. Speaking after the Sharing Economy and Gig Industry Roundtable Session, Ahmad Zahid highlighted that the bill would be the first of its kind globally, offering dedicated protections for over 1.12 million Malaysians engaged in the sector. 'Several countries have amended existing laws to include gig workers, but Malaysia is introducing a new act specifically for this industry,' he said. The bill aligns with efforts to build a fair, inclusive, and resilient future economy. Ahmad Zahid noted that the International Labour Organisation (ILO) has shown interest in learning from Malaysia's approach in drafting the legislation. This was conveyed by Malaysian Gig Community Secretariat chairman Datuk Seri Mohd Sharkar Shamsudin, who is currently in Geneva to discuss the bill with the ILO. Additionally, the soon-to-be-established Malaysian Gig Economy Commission (SEGiM) will play a crucial role in the national gig economy ecosystem. The commission, under the Prime Minister's Department, will oversee implementation, coordination, and compliance within the sector. 'SEGiM will strengthen self-regulation among platform providers while ensuring transparent policy enforcement,' Ahmad Zahid said. The Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation will continue as the technical secretariat, consolidating industry feedback and coordinating with the Human Resource Ministry. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had earlier assured that all welfare concerns for gig workers would be addressed through the bill. Also present at the session were Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said and Deputy Human Resource Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Rahman Mohamad.

No appeal, no reinstatement, says Zahid

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Umno members suspended or sacked from the party must file a formal appeal in order to be reinstated as a member of the party, says party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. Zahid said only two leaders have appealed their suspensions so far, namely former MPs Tajuddin Abdul Rahman and Salim Sharif. Tajuddin's suspension was lifted in November. Zahid said he respected the motion by the Sembrong Umno division for its former divisional chief Hishammuddin Hussein to be reinstated as a party member. However, the party's official procedures must be followed. 'Any polemic or public statement that isn't followed by formal action will hold no value in terms of party procedures,' he was quoted as saying by Utusan Malaysia. Hishammuddin Hussein. Hishammuddin, who is Sembrong MP, was suspended by Umno for six years in January 2023. He said then that he would not appeal as he was never informed of the reason for the disciplinary action against him. Zahid had said last month that he would leave it to the Umno Supreme Council to decide on the Sembrong division's motion for Hishammuddin's reinstatement. However, he pointed out that Hishammuddin, a former Umno vice-president, has yet to submit an appeal or apology. Zahid said Umno respected the voice of the grassroots and that the party remained open to reinstating sacked or suspended members. However, these members must be sincere and remorseful over their past actions to ensure they were not seeking the reinstatement for their own political agenda. 'We are not closing the door totally, but we are also not forgetting the past hurts. If accusations had been made publicly, then apologies must also be made publicly.' Besides Hishammuddin, former Umno information chief Shahril Hamdan was also suspended from the party, not long after calling for Zahid to step down as party president following the results of the 2022 general election, when Umno won just 26 seats. Former Rembau MP Khairy Jamaluddin and former Tanjong Karang MP Noh Omar were sacked from Umno for breaching party discipline during the election campaign.

Hishammuddin's suspension not discussed at Supreme Council meeting, says Zahid
Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said it would be up to the Supreme Council to decide on whether to lift former vice-president Hishammuddin Hussein's six-year suspension if the matter was raised. BANGI : Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi says the possibility of lifting Hishammuddin Hussein's six-year suspension was not raised at the party's Supreme Council meeting last night. Zahid, however, said he would bring the matter up to the Supreme Council 'when the time comes'. 'And they will decide,' he told reporters here. Zahid was asked to comment on a video Hishammuddin had posted on social media in which the former vice-president hinted that he was unlikely to appeal his suspension from the party, saying it was a matter of principle. Hishammuddin was suspended from Umno for six years in January 2023. Media reports citing the suspension letter said it was due to a violation of Clause 20.9 of the party's constitution, though no further details were provided. In December last year, calls emerged for Hishammuddin to return to Umno following the Supreme Council's decision to lift the suspension of former Pasir Salak MP Tajuddin Abdul Rahman. Zahid was reported as saying the party was open to accepting Hishammuddin's return, provided he filed an appeal. Meanwhile, a Supreme Council member who spoke on condition of anonymity said that Johor Umno chief Onn Hafiz Ghazi did not attend the Supreme Council meeting last night. Onn Hafiz had previously pledged to bring forward a motion by the Sembrong Umno division to reinstate Hishammuddin. 'There was no discussion about it,' the source told FMT when asked if the meeting discussed Hishammuddin's membership. On June 21, the Sembrong Umno division in Johor passed a motion urging the party leadership to lift Hishammuddin's suspension immediately and unconditionally. The source explained that typically, all motions passed by Umno divisions would be collected, filtered and reviewed by a committee at the party headquarters. 'These motions will then be handed over to another committee tasked with deciding whether to act on them, discuss them or reject them.' The source also said Zahid only repeated what he had previously stated – that any suspended member must file an appeal if they wished to have their suspension lifted.
