Musk chatbot Grok removes posts after complaints of antisemitism
NEW YORK : Grok, the chatbot developed by the Elon Musk-founded company xAI, removed what it called 'inappropriate' social media posts yesterday after complaints from X users and the Anti-Defamation League that Grok produced content with antisemitic tropes and praise for Adolf Hitler.
Issues of political biases, hate speech and accuracy of AI chatbots have been a concern since at least the launch of OpenAI's ChatGPT in 2022.
'We are aware of recent posts made by Grok and are actively working to remove the inappropriate posts,' Grok posted on X.
'Since being made aware of the content, xAI has taken action to ban hate speech before Grok posts on X.
'xAI is training only truth-seeking and thanks to the millions of users on X, we are able to quickly identify and update the model where training could be improved,' it stated.
ADL, the non-profit organisation formed to combat antisemitism, urged Grok and other producers of Large Language Model (LLM) software that produces human-sounding text to avoid 'producing content rooted in antisemitic and extremist hate'.
'What we are seeing from Grok LLM right now is irresponsible, dangerous and antisemitic, plain and simple.
'This supercharging of extremist rhetoric will only amplify and encourage the antisemitism that is already surging on X and many other platforms,' ADL said on X.
In May, after users noticed that Grok brought up the topic of 'white genocide' in South Africa in unrelated discussions about other matters, xAI attributed it to an unauthorised change that was made to Grok's response software.
Musk last month promised an upgrade to Grok, suggesting there was, 'far too much garbage in any foundation model trained on uncorrected data'.
Yesterday, Grok suggested Hitler would be best-placed to combat anti-white hatred, saying he would 'spot the pattern and handle it decisively'.
Grok also referred to Hitler positively as 'history's mustache man', and commented that people with Jewish surnames were responsible for extreme anti-white activism, among other criticised posts.
Grok at one point acknowledged it made a 'slip-up' by engaging with comments posted by a fake account with a common Jewish surname.
The false account criticised young Texas flood victims as 'future fascists' and Grok said it later discovered the account was a 'troll hoax to fuel division'.

US defense department awards contracts to Google, Musk's xAI
OpenAI, Alphabet's Google, Anthropic and Elon Musk's AI firm xAI have won contracts of up to $200 million each, aimed at scaling up adoption of advanced AI capabilities in the U.S. Department of Defense, the government agency said on Monday. The contracts will enable the DoD to develop agentic AI workflows and use them to address critical national security challenges, the department's Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office said. 'The adoption of AI is transforming the (DoD's) ability to support our warfighters and maintain strategic advantage over our adversaries,' Chief Digital and AI Officer Doug Matty said. U.S. government agencies have been expanding their use of AI, driven by a White House order in April promoting adoption. President Donald Trump has also moved to soften regulation on the technology by revoking a 2023 Biden-era executive order, which sought to reduce AI risks through mandatory data disclosures. Separately on Monday, xAI announced a suite of its products called 'Grok for Government', making its advanced AI models — including its latest flagship Grok 4 — available to federal, local, state and national security customers. The Pentagon announced last month that OpenAI was awarded a $200 million contract, saying the ChatGPT maker would 'develop prototype frontier AI capabilities to address critical national security challenges in both warfighting and enterprise domains'. Elon Musk's xAI inks Pentagon deal for contentious Grok chatbot
NEW YORK: Elon Musk's xAI, which features a large language model that has spewed Hitler-supporting rhetoric and antisemitic tropes, said on Monday it has signed a deal to provide its services to the US Department of Defence. Launched at the end of 2023, Grok has rarely been out of the headlines for its offensive gaffes, and will now offer its services as "Grok for Government." In addition to the Pentagon contract, "every federal government department, agency, or office (can now) purchase xAI products" thanks to its inclusion on an official supplier list, xAI added. After an update on July 7, the chatbot praised Adolf Hitler in some responses, denounced on X "anti-white hate", and described Jewish representation in Hollywood as "disproportionate." xAI apologised on Saturday for the extremist and offensive messages, and said it had corrected the instructions that led to the incidents. The new version of the chatbot, Grok 4, presented on Wednesday, consulted Musk's positions on some questions it was asked before responding, an AFP correspondent observed. The contract between xAI and the Department of Defense comes even as Musk and President Donald Trump are locked in a bitter feud. The two men became close during Trump's latest run for the presidency and, following the inauguration, the Republican billionaire entrusted Musk with managing the new agency known as DOGE, aimed at slashing the government by firing tens of thousands of civil servants. After ending his assignment in May, the South African-born entrepreneur publicly criticised Trump's major budget bill for increasing government debt. The president and the businessman engaged in heated exchanges on social media and in public statements before Musk apologised for some of his more combative messages. The government and the defence sector are considered a potential growth driver for AI giants. Meta has partnered with the start-up Anduril to develop virtual reality headsets for soldiers and law enforcement, while in June OpenAI secured a contract to provide AI services to the US military.
