Japan's Suzuki paved way for generation of players
Suzuki, who proved his abilities despite starting his MLB journey at a relatively advanced age, became the first Japanese-born player inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame during a ceremony in Cooperstown, New York, on Sunday.
Arriving from the Orix BlueWave of the Pacific League in Nippon Professional Baseball as a 27-year-old major league rookie with the Seattle Mariners, Ichiro wasted no time showing that his talent and determination translated on MLB diamonds.
The slender Ichiro, with an unorthodox high leg kick to time his swing in the batter's box, turned routine ground balls into short infield singles with his speed down the line and made baserunners cautious with his strong arm in right field.
Suzuki announced himself with an electric 2001 season in which he hit .350 to win the batting title with a rookie record 242 hits while swiping a league-leading 56 bases in sweeping Rookie of the Year and American League MVP honors.
The batting title/stolen base double had last been achieved in 1949 by fabled trailblazer Jackie Robinson, the man who broke the color barrier as MLB's first African American player.
Suzuki, who had won seven batting titles in a row and three straight Pacific League MVP awards in Japan, was just getting warmed up in the majors and quickly became a household name in Seattle.
Following a strict daily practice routine and stretching regimen, Suzuki was a model of high level consistency during a 19-year MLB career that also included stops with the New York Yankees and Miami Marlins.
He went on to post a record 10 consecutive seasons of at least 200 hits, reaching his zenith in 2004 when he stroked 262 hits to break an 84-year-old major league record set by George Sisler as he claimed another batting title with a .372 average.
By the time he retired, Suzuki was a 10-times MLB All-Star who held the record for the most hits by a professional baseball player, including his time in Japan, with 4,367.
Including his 1,278 hits for Orix in Japan, the claim has been made that with his major league hits total, Ichiro has surpassed the late Pete Rose, who is MLB's career hits leader with 4,256.
"He's a guy who comes around once in a lifetime," Hall of Famer Derek Jeter, who was a teammate of Suzuki's when the Japanese outfielder played with the Yankees from 2012 to 2014, once said. "No one's ever seen anybody like him. And to be quite honest, we probably won't see anybody like him again."
Suzuki, who during his career smashed the perception that only Japanese pitchers were good enough to excel in MLB, not only inspired a generation of players but also prompted clubs to more aggressively scout and sign hitters from Japan.
His rise to stardom while playing in MLB opened the door for fellow Japanese hitters like Hideki Matsuyama while current Los Angeles Dodgers two-way standout Shohei Ohtani has also referenced him as an inspiration.
"Growing up, Ichiro was for me the way that I think some kids, some people, look at me today," Ohtani told GQ magazine in 2023. "Like I'm a different species. Larger than life. He was a superstar in Japan. He had this charisma about him."

Reds turn to Zack Littell in quest to give bullpen a breather vs. Cubs
August 5 - Right-hander Zack Littell will face a tough task as he makes his Cincinnati Reds debut in Tuesday night's game against the host Chicago Cubs. A trade-deadline acquisition last week from the Tampa Bay Rays, Littell (8-8, 3.58 ERA) will start the middle contest of a three-game series against the team that rests atop the National League wild-card standings. Littell will take the mound for a Reds team that has seen its bullpen taxed of late due to back-to-back games in which the starting pitcher did not make it past the second inning. Rookie Chase Burns saw his start Saturday night scrapped after an inning due to heavy rain that postponed the conclusion of the Speedway Classic in Bristol, Tenn. Five relievers threw the remaining eight innings in a 4-2 loss to the Atlanta Braves. Monday starter Nick Lodolo left the series opener against the Cubs after just 1 2/3 innings after the left-hander developed a blister on his left index finger. Five relievers went the rest of the way for the Reds, who won 3-2 and sit three games behind the NL's third and final wild-card berth. Cincinnati manager Terry Francona told reporters Lodolo already was looking better in the locker room. However, because the pitcher previously has dealt with blister issues, Francona added the team likely would "err on the side of caution" with him. Littell, 29, will make his first career start against the Cubs, although he is 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA in six relief appearances. He has yielded just three hits, a walk and an unearned run while striking out seven over 5 2/3 innings. Earlier in the day Monday, Francona told MLB Network Radio that trading for Littell helps the ballclub on two fronts. It also lets the Reds move starter Nick Martinez to the bullpen. Martinez threw 2 1/3 innings after Lodolo's injury. "Speaking kind of honestly, we thought the price for relievers was just going berserk," Francona said. "And we thought, well, Nick Martinez is as good or better than any of these guys. So let's just try to get a starter, and I think it's going to help us." Chicago also had its starter go down early in Monday's loss. Right-hander Michael Soroka, acquired last week from Washington, left after two innings with discomfort in his pitching shoulder. After the game, Cubs manager Craig Counsell told reporters Soroka would go to the injured list. Shota Imanaga (8-4, 3.25 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Cubs on Tuesday. The left-hander won his only start against the Reds on June 9, 2024, allowing just two runs on five hits with a walk and seven strikeouts over 6 2/3 innings in a 4-2 road victory. The Reds have struggled against lefties this season. Their hitters are batting only .222 against them, the fourth-lowest average in the majors. Outfielder Austin Hays, however, is hitting .368 with two home runs and 13 RBIs in 57 at-bats against left-handers. The Cubs hit the Reds well in the first two series of the season, sporting a .290 average (61-for-210) and 10 homers through the first six games, of which they won four. However, Chicago managed three hits, one off its season low, in Monday's loss. "We didn't hit," Counsell said. "It's as simple as that. ... Just not going to win many games with three hits." Pete Crow-Amstrong has hit .375 (9-for-24) against the Reds this season, with two homers and 10 RBIs. --Field Level Media

Islam Makhachev vs Jack Della Maddalena fight date ‘leaked' by Khabib Nurmagomedov
Khabib Nurmagomedov might have given away the event at which Islam Makhachev will challenge for the UFC welterweight title, as a fight with Jack Della Maddalena looms. Makhachev relinquished the lightweight title in May with an eye on challenging for the welterweight belt, which Della Maddalena took from Belal Muhammad – one of Makhachev's teammates – that same month. And according to Khabib – one of Makhachev's coaches and a close childhood friend of the Russian – Makhachev will take on 'JDM' at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The UFC typically holds a pay-per-view at the legendary venue every November, and while it has not yet announced this year's edition of the MSG fight card, it is expected to take place as usual. It could well prove to be UFC 322, with UFC 321 scheduled for 25 October in Abu Dhabi. 'They promise us,' Nurmagomedov, himself a former UFC lightweight champion, said at an event last weekend. He then seemed to turn to Makhachev's manager Ali Abdelaziz, sat in the crowd, to say: 'Be quiet, please. 'He's now gonna be upset because I give information. But this is his deal with UFC; I don't deal with UFC, this is his problem. 'But we have a deal with them. He's gonna fight in Madison Square Garden, and they say yes.' Nurmagomedov, also managed by Abdelaziz, held the joint-record for most successful lightweight title defences in UFC history, at three, until Makhachev submitted Renato Moicano in January. With that first-round finish, after Moicano replaced the injured Arman Tsarukyan on one day's notice, Makhachev set a new record and established himself as the No 1 pound-for-pound fighter in the UFC. But the 33-year-old faces a stern test against Della Maddalena. The Australian, 28, has won 18 fights in a row since losing his first two MMA bouts, both in 2016. He took the welterweight title from Muhammad with a unanimous-decision win, producing a clinic in striking to overcome the wrestling specialist. He also demonstrated tremendous takedown defence against Muhammad and will likely need to do the same against Makhachev. That said, the Russian does not rely on wrestling as heavily as Muhammad does and Nurmagomedov did; his own striking skills have been pivotal to his success in recent years. 'I think Maddalena is the toughest opponent in Islam's career,' the retired Khabib told Adam Zubayraev in July. 'That's my opinion. 'Not Charles, no one else,' he added, referencing Makhachev's submission of Oliveira to win the lightweight title in 2022. 'None of those other fighters. That's just my personal opinion. 'First of all, Maddalena is twice the size of Ilia [Topuria, the new lightweight champion, with whom Makhachev has been linked]. Taller, bigger, stronger legs, bigger frame. His boxing is just as good, and in grappling, he scrambles really well – if you've watched him. 'For me, if I were preparing Islam for either Ilia or Maddalena, I'd be more concerned – and am more concerned – about Maddalena.'
