The 'Great Moose Migration': Millions tune in for Sweden's epic livestream

Yahoo16-04-2025
The Brief
Swedish slow TV hit "The Great Moose Migration" has become a phenomenon.
The livestream of the annual event began airing Tuesday, a week ahead of schedule.
Millions tune in to watch remote cameras capture dozens of moose as they swim across a river toward summer grazing pastures.
A livestream of a wild animal wonder in Sweden is once again captivating the internet.
Called "Den stora älgvandringen," the country's TV production of their annual moose migration began this week and is available to stream anywhere in the world.
The backstory
This time of year, dozens of moose in Sweden swim across the Ångerman River, some 187 miles northwest of Stockholm, heading toward summer grazing pastures.
The moose have walked the route for thousands of years, making it easy for the crew to know where to lay almost 12 miles of cable and position 26 remote cameras and seven night cameras. A drone is also used.
The backstory
The show began streaming in 2019 with nearly a million people watching. Last year, the production hit 9 million viewers on SVT Play, the streaming platform for national broadcaster SVT.
The crew of up to 15 people works out of SVT's control room in Umeå, producing the show at a distance to avoid interfering with the migration.
Where to watch
The livestream will be up for 24 hours a day for the next 20 days, and can be watched online here.
Dig deeper
The livestream kicked off a week ahead of schedule this year due to warm weather and early moose movement.

The moose migration isn't the only wild nature phenomenon to spawn a dedicated audience.
In the Netherlands, Utrecht's "fish doorbell" cam enlists help from those watching to "ring a doorbell" that signals authorities to open up a river lock to help fish migrate.
Big picture view
The doorbell helps protect fish like bream, pike, and bass from predators by preventing them from getting stuck behind the lock.
The project, now in its fifth year, has also attracted millions of viewers.
Where to watch
The livestream is expected to run through late May, and can be watched online here.

The livestream of the moose migration and the fish doorbell cam are examples of slow TV.
Slow TV is a genre of a television or streaming production that makes available a long, uninterrupted broadcast of ordinary events, typically in real-time.
The backstory
It first became popularized in 2009 when Norway's public broadcaster aired every minute of a seven-hour train trip across the southern part of the country.
What they're saying
Annette Hill, a professor of media and communications at Jönköping University in Sweden, told The Associated Press slow TV has roots in reality television but lacks the staging and therefore feels more authentic for viewers.
Why you should care
In a stressful, busy, fast-paced world, slow TV can help viewers relax as they watch the journal unfold without any high stakes. Those who work with the moose production say it has helped bring down their stress levels.
Slow TV can also build a shared community.
SVT's app will send a push alert when moose are on camera, immediately driving a spike in viewership and chat commenters. Thousands of people will suddenly find themselves doing the same thing – admiring and cheering on one of nature's wonders.

Netflix's new crime thriller movie is now streaming — and it's a compelling look at psychological turmoil

Netflix keeps proving it knows how to serve up a solid thriller, and 'An Honest Life' is another slow-burn entry to add to the list. The premise is what drew me to this new Swedish original: A law student who's eager to start fresh gets pulled into a violent protest where he meets a magnetic and fiercely rebellious woman. It's a story that explores how easily someone can lose themselves chasing purpose in all the wrong places. While 'An Honest Life' might not come with big-name stars, it's backed by strong direction and a compelling narrative that feels both timely and emotionally resonant. The movie teases a sharp look at political unrest and the price of idealism without feeling preachy. So, if you want a thriller that's more about mood and tension than non-stop action, this is one to watch. Here's everything to know about 'An Honest Life' now that it's streaming on Netflix. 'An Honest Life' follows Simon (Simon Lööf), a young law student who moves to the city of Lund with high hopes for the future. But as he grows disillusioned with his studies, he finds himself drawn to Max (Nora Rios), a bold and rebellious activist he meets during a violent protest. Captivated by her charisma and radical worldview, Simon is slowly pulled into her world of protest, secrecy, and underground movements. Their bond, once thrilling and rebellious, begins to twist into something far more destructive. As Simon becomes more deeply involved, he's forced to confront dangerous truths and make choices that threaten to destroy everything he thought he stood for. 'An Honest Life' is more of a character-driven drama than a traditional thriller. While there are plenty of thriller elements like violent protests erupting in the streets and the protagonist's growing psychological conflict, the story stays tightly focused on a small group of characters. At the center is Simon, who, in the movie's opening moments, is hit with his first 'test' when someone on the phone instructs him to steal a set of expensive watches. We learn that Simon once aspired to be a writer but chose law instead, mainly because he felt he didn't have anything real to say. But on his way to begin law school, he stumbles into the chaos of a protest and is mistakenly identified as someone who threw an explosive. He's chased by police and only escapes thanks to Max, a mysterious woman in a gas mask, introduced with heavy breathing that gives off serious Darth Vader vibes. If you closed your eyes and just listened, I guarantee you'd think a 'Star Wars' movie was playing. 'An Honest Life' has many themes woven throughout, but two of the main ones are class disparity and exploitation. Simon lives with a group of wealthy, privileged housemates who treat him more like hired help than an equal, asking him to set the table, serve starters, and clean up while they go out drinking. It's a quiet but telling dynamic that shows the class divide between them and Simon's role as the outsider. It's the kind of environment that makes him especially vulnerable to someone like Max. This is where 'An Honest Life' slowly shifts into thriller territory, as Simon begins to fall under the influence of Max and her group of rebellious friends. His path as a law student grows increasingly uncertain, and the deeper he gets, the more blurred his sense of direction becomes. It's a slow, unsettling descent into psychological manipulation. Some viewers may not find 'An Honest Life' as immediately appealing as other Netflix originals. It's a slow burn that leans heavily into character drama, without relying on action or mystery to propel things forward. It takes a while to fully settle into the story, and its two-hour runtime might be off-putting for anyone after a quick, high-stakes thriller. But 'An Honest Life' stands out in Netflix's ever-growing thriller library. It trades fast-paced twists and explosive moments for a quieter, more psychological kind of tension. If you're into serious, character-driven storytelling, this one should hold your attention, especially if you're willing to let it take its time. If you're into stories about youthful idealism clashing with harsh realities and how that collision can spiral out of control, this Swedish movie is definitely worth a look. Anchored by a strong lead performance and grounded direction from Mikael Marcimain, 'An Honest Life' rewards patience with a story that makes an impact. Sadly, I don't think it will make much of an impact on Netflix, considering it's a different kind of thriller, but I'm hoping it will get some recognition, at least. You can stream 'An Honest Life' on Netflix now. For more streaming recommendations, see what's new on Netflix in August 2025.

These dual-textured pads contain lactic acid and salicylic acid, and they're designed to help control excess sebum while exfoliating dead skin, refining pores, and keeping your glow game strong. ✨ A clever Pikk-it tool created to reach into your vacuum rollers and remove all those stubborn hair clumps that are stealing your vac's mojo (and suction). These nifty little contraptions are designed to create a secure and snug fit between outlets and plugs, ensuring they stay exactly where you want them. A six-pack of XL wool dryer balls you can throw in with your laundry to speed up the drying time — and prevent you from restarting the cycle for a second, third, or (if you have an old dryer like me 😭) fourth time. They also prevent your clothes from coming out covered in that annoying fuzz or dealing with little static shocks when you touch something. Plus, they naturally fluff and soften items, so you can wrap yourself in that cozy sweater or those plush towels straight out of the dryer! A pack of anti-slip pads to save your ~sole~ from the embarrassment of slipping and sliding in public when you strap on your new heels for the first time. The grippy, adhesive pads stick onto the bottom of your shoes for added stability, and the discreet design will keep everyone's eyes on your fabulous new pumps (instead of wondering whether you stepped in something). A quick-drying mesh bath toy storage bag parents can't stop raving about because it makes bathtime cleanup a breeze. It works like a net, letting you scoop up all the toys from the bathwater. Hang it to dry afterward, and your little one's toys will be ready for the next splashy adventure. A pack of headrest hooks to bring organizational bliss to the otherwise chaotic domain that is your car. These little gems can hold everything from your purse to those grocery bags that always seem to topple over, leaving a free-for-all of rolling onions and lemons on the floor. These are also perfect for the kiddos' backpacks and sports bags! A pack of teeth-friendly silicone pouch lids, your sidekick in the battle against messy mealtimes. This little gizmo is equipped with a genius flow-control valve that ensures your eager little self-feeder can dive into their food without turning it into a playful yet messy art project on you, the table, the chair, and themselves. A small but mighty portable air compressor ready to save you (and your flat tire) when in a pinch. This gadget will get the air pumped back up in about a minute, and it features real-time pressure monitoring so you don't have to guess if you've got enough in your tires. Added bonus: It has its own built-in LED light, so you can see what you're doing if this unfortunate turn of events happens at night.
