A Kendrick Lamar Class Will Be Offered At Temple University This Fall
Source: PA Wire – PA Images / Getty This fall, you can get some class credit for your obsession with Kendrick Lamar. Well, only if you are enrolled at Temple University in Philly, where noted professor Timothy Welbeck will teach an inaugural class on the 'Not Like Us' rapper. Welbeck is a professor in Temple's Department of Africology and African American Studies and the Director for the Center for Anti-Racism, who has taught at the school for 14 years. The course will be called Kendrick Lamar and the Morale of M.A.A.D City , referencing a track from Lamar's 2012 sophomore release Good Kid, M.A.A.D City . The professor told NBC10 in Philadelphia that he's been using Lamar's music in his classes for at least the last decade and that the department was receptive to the idea of a class on the Los Angeles-based rap star. He won't be the first musician the university has offered a class on, as Jay-Z, his wife Beyoncé, and Tupac have all been studied there as well. 'My current department chair was very open to the idea and received it almost immediately,' Welbeck told the outlet. 'In a lot of ways, our department at Temple specifically, and Temple more broadly, has embraced the study of hip-hop in academic spaces.' Lamar, 38, created a viral sensation in 2024 with his Drake diss track 'Not Like Us,' which he performed at the Super Bowl LIX halftime show in February. He's the only rap star to win a Pulitzer Prize, which he did in 2018. He's also won 22 Grammys, placing him third behind Jay-Z and Kanye West. Lamar is currently on the international leg of his Grand National Tour with SZA in support of his sixth studio album, GNX. Welbeck says the class will cover Lamar's music through the lens of the changing demographics in Compton, California, and its impact on Lamar's life and career. He hopes his students will come away from the course with a renewed appreciation for the artist and how he fits into the Black cultural zeitgeist. 'Kendrick Lamar is one of the defining voices of his generation, and in many ways, both his art and life is reflective of the Black experience in many telling ways,' Welbeck said. 'Being able to discuss his art in the environment that helps lead him into being the man that he is in a lot of ways can tell you about him as an individual, but can also talk about the journey towards self-actualization, particularly as it is related to the Black experience.' Documentary On The Legendary Justice Thurgood Marshall Set To Premiere In Fall
Source: Sam Falk / Getty On Sept. 9, fans and history buffs will get an inside look at the extraordinary life of Thurgood Marshall, the first African American Supreme Court justice to take the bench in 1967. Set to premiere on PBS, Becoming Thurgood: America's Social Architect traces the upbringing and legacy of Justice Marshall. The documentary follows his journey from his roots in Baltimore, Maryland, through his education at Lincoln and Howard universities—two premier Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs)—to his trailblazing work as a civil rights lawyer and jurist. It will also explore his pivotal role in challenging school segregation and championing justice, culminating in his historic appointment to the U.S. Supreme Court. Viewers are in for a treat as the documentary will feature the iconic justice retelling his own life story using rare footage pulled from an eight-hour oral history recording conducted by the civil rights leader, according to the Chicago Defender. 'For the first time, audiences will hear Thurgood Marshall tell his own story — in his own words,' the documentary's director Alexis Aggrey told the publication on July 2. 'This film is the first to center Marshall's own voice, drawn from a rare eight-hour oral history. It's not just a documentary; it's a conversation with a man whose legal mind reshaped the nation and whose legacy still echoes through our justice system today.' As a lawyer and judge, Thurgood Marshall dedicated his career to defending the constitutional rights of all Americans, a commitment that earned him the nickname 'Mr. Civil Rights.' According to the United States Courts website, after attending the all-Black Lincoln University, Marshall was denied admission to the University of Maryland School of Law due to his race. Undeterred, he enrolled at Howard University School of Law, where he graduated first in his class and studied under Charles Hamilton Houston, the school's vice-dean and a leading civil rights strategist. At Howard, Marshall came to believe that the doctrine of 'separate but equal' established in Plessy v. Ferguson was fundamentally flawed. He recognized that education was key to equality and was deeply moved by the glaring disparities in educational opportunities for Black Americans. Marshall and Houston launched a legal campaign against segregation, beginning with cases like Murray v. Maryland (1936) and Missouri ex rel. Gaines v. Canada (1938). When Houston returned to private practice in 1938, Marshall took the helm of the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund. He went on to argue pivotal cases such as Sweatt v. Painter and McLaurin v. Oklahoma (both 1950), laying the groundwork for the landmark Brown v. Board of Education (1954), in which the Supreme Court struck down school segregation as unconstitutional. After years of fighting for justice, Marshall was appointed U.S. Solicitor General in 1965 by President Lyndon Johnson, becoming the third-highest official in the Justice Department. In 1967, Johnson nominated him to the U.S. Supreme Court, where he served until his retirement in 1991 before his untimely death in 1993. Stanley Nelson, who served as an executive producer behind the forthcoming project, told the Chicago Defender that it was 'an honor' to shed light on Justice Marshall's fearless life. 'It was an honor to work on this film about an American titan whose legacy continues to expand and endure in these turbulent times.' Becoming Thurgood: America's Social Architect will premiere on Sept. 9 at 10 p.m. ET on PBS, and the PBS app. Will you be watching? SEE ALSO: What Was Malcolm X Working On When He Was Assassinated? Formulated to mimic the makeup of our bodies, this bad boy delivers ✨hypochlorous acid✨ (no, it's not a spell for incredible skin), which is found naturally in white blood cells. Okay, so I've had this for a while, but I rarely ever used it. A few weeks ago, I had my makeup professionally done for the first time, and IDK if it was the primer that the artist used, or how my skincare reacted with the primer, but the next day, my skin was red and burning like heck. I was panicking because I just had a breakout in May and am STILL trying to get rid of the hyperpigmentation, so I didn't want the itchy, burning skin to leave me with dark spots. A day later, I remembered I had this and it would help with irritation and redness, so I began spraying it on my face twice a day. I kid you not, my face immediately stopped burning after I began using it. After trying multiple serums and moisturizers, this was the only thing that calmed my skin *and* I only got one dark spot, which wasn't even all that bad. If your skin is ever irritated, don't hesitate to grab this; I know I won' review: "Love this product, it has become my holy grail. Which makes sense, cuz it's made from organic green tea, that's what gives it the green-ish tint! It'll blend your makeup like a dream *and* may have you craving a matcha. Promising review: "This is by far my favorite makeup sponge. I'm allergic to latex, and I hadn't realized that my previous makeup sponge was irritating my skin every time I used it because it had latex in it. This sponge doesn't irritate me at all, and it's also great at blending my makeup. I get a seamless finish every time." —HPrice: $16 An ingrown hair oil reviewers are calling "magic," cuz it works that well. Shaving won't be nearly as miserable with this, since it's specifically designed to soothe ingrown hairs, bumps, and irritation. Promising review: "I'm not kidding when I say that this stuff has changed my life. For as long as I can remember, I've been tortured by painful, cystic, ingrown hairs on my bikini line that have made me self-conscious and waxing/shaving a nightmare. I've tried cotton underwear, regular exfoliation, and moisturizing, and while these have helped, they've not kept the ingrowns at bay. Enter: FurOil. I cannot tell you how grateful I am for having discovered the Fur Oil Ingrown Concentrate. I can now get regular Brazilian waxes and not have to suffer from ingrown hairs. I use the regular Fur Oil every day after showering, and then this guy on any ingrowns that appear (much less often now!), and it knocks out all the inflammation before it has a chance to become angry and red. No more scarring or painful cysts, it's honestly like magic. I cannot recommend it more if you've been in the same boat! Between Fur Oil and salicylic acid, my skin is so much happier and healthier." —KatPrice: $34 And an exfoliating soap bar *specifically* to target ingrown hairs, razor bumps, and rough, dry skin. Impurities that lead to clogged hair follicles and irritation? Pfftt, yeah right, not with this around. Promising review: "I picked up this bar on a whim because I often experience ingrown hairs all over my lower body when I shave. Using this bar, while also using a glycolic toner, has dramatically reduced the problem. I will continue to use this soap, and I expect to repurchase it when I've used it up! I think that it will last me awhile." —Maddie $26 An Ilia skin tint with SPF 40 that's like Captain America with a protective SPF *shield* and all. It's also packed with hyaluronic acid to improve moisture levels, and squalane to help skin's hydration and elasticity. We love some lightweight makeup that's also got superpowers. It's all I use." —Katharine $48 (available in 30 shades) A Tower 28 gel cleanser + makeup remover so you can take off concealer, foundation, blush, and more products while giving your complexion a deep clean. I have this, and I gotta say, top-freaking-tier. Elite. Exquisite. This cleanser did its big oneeeee. I love a multitasker, so this bb is right up my alley. I mean, a cleanser and makeup remover?! Genius. I have, like, a 13-step skincare routine, so anything that removes a step is an absolute blessssing. Plus, it removes makeup like a *dream*. It feels good on the skin, my oily skin is enjoying it, and it hasn't caused me to break out or have any other annoying skin problems. My face feels fresh, clean, and hydrated. And hydration + oily skin can sometimes = a scary situation, but this doesn't turn me into, how should I put this, the bottom of a bag of Five Guys fries. If this cleanser has a million fans, I'm one of 'em. If this cleanser has one fan, it's me. I'm just $20 A balancing color corrector, because no matter how much concealer you apply, your dark circles *still* are peeking through. It'll help neutralize hyperpigmentation and dark spots, delivering you a more even complexion without standing out under foundation or cracking or creasing. I have repurchased and will keep it as a staple." —JenniferPrice: $27 (available in six shades) A thickening brow balm that's the definition of a multitasker.
