Tata Motors' global wholesales fall 9% in Q1, led by JLR and PV segments

Tata Motors Group reported a 9 per cent year-on-year decline in global wholesales for the first quarter of FY26, with total volumes falling to 2,99,664 units. The decline was led by a drop in both commercial and passenger vehicle sales across its global operations, including subsidiary Jaguar Land Rover (JLR).
Commercial vehicle wholesales, including Tata Daewoo, stood at 87,569 units in Q1 FY26, down 6 per cent compared to the same quarter last year. Passenger vehicle (PV) wholesales, which include the company's electric vehicle portfolio, also witnessed a 10 per cent drop, with total sales at 1,24,809 units.
JLR, the UK-based luxury vehicle arm of Tata Motors, saw an 11 per cent year-on-year decline in global wholesales, reaching 87,286 units. Of this, Jaguar accounted for 2,339 units, while Land Rover contributed 84,947 units. The JLR figures do not include volumes from the company's China joint venture, CJLR (Chery Jaguar Land Rover).
The company said the volume decline was expected, primarily due to the phasing out of legacy Jaguar models ahead of new product launches and a temporary pause in shipments to the US during April, following the introduction of import tariffs.
Despite the overall decline, JLR said its more profitable models—Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, and Defender—accounted for a higher share of sales. These three models comprised 77.2 per cent of total wholesale volumes in Q1 FY26, compared to 66.3 per cent in the previous quarter and 67.8 per cent a year ago.

India, UK trade pact does not mandate patent term extensions or data exclusivity
Representative image The India-UK free trade agreement (FTA) does not mandate patent term extensions or data exclusivity, which are two common tools of evergreening of patents, according to a commerce ministry document. The move would protect the interests of the domestic generic drugs industry. The UK was demanding for inclusion of "data exclusivity" provision in the agreement. "The FTA does not mandate patent term extensions or data exclusivity -- two common tools of evergreening. India's patent law provisions on patentability criteria under Section 3(d) (of Indian Patent Act) remain fully protected," the ministry said. Section 3(d) of the Indian Patents Act, 1970, restricts patents for already-known drugs unless the new claims are superior in terms of efficacy, while Section 3(b) bars patents for products that are against public interest and do not demonstrate enhanced efficacy over existing products. Certain multinational firms have asked India to amend these laws, which were strongly opposed. The agreement, signed on July 24, may take about a year to come into force. Data exclusivity provides protection to the technical data generated by innovator companies to prove the usefulness of their products. In the pharmaceutical sector, drug companies generate data through expensive global clinical trials to prove the efficacy and safety of their new medicine. By gaining exclusive rights over this data, innovator companies can prevent their competitors from obtaining a marketing licence for low-cost versions during the tenure of this exclusivity. Earlier, India had also rejected a similar demand from the four-nation EFTA bloc in their free trade agreement negotiations. The European Free Trade Association (EFTA) members are Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland. The pact was signed in March 2023 and will be implemented later this year. The UK (AstraZeneca and GSK) and Switzerland (Novartis and Roche) have some of the major pharma firms of the world. India's generic drug industry is estimated about USD 25 billion, and the country exports 50 per cent of its produce. An expert said data exclusivity is beyond the provisions of the Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) agreement under the World Trade Organization (WTO). Evergreening of patent rights is a strategy allegedly adopted by the innovators having patent rights over products to renew them by bringing in some minor changes, such as adding new mixtures or formulations. It is done when their patent is about to expire. A patent on the new form gives the innovator company a 20-year monopoly on the drug. "The FTA does not require India to provide patent term extensions for regulatory delays and data exclusivity for pharmaceuticals or agrochemicals," it said, adding that this ensures that generic manufacturers can enter the market without unnecessary delay, once the patent has expired or is challenged. The agreement, it said, does not alter or dilute India's ability to refuse patents for minor modifications of known substances; and prevent frivolous or repetitive patent filings that block generics. "There is no obligation for patent linkage or automatic injunctions either-key tools used to delay generics in other jurisdictions," the ministry said.

Nayara Energy moves Delhi HC against Microsoft for suspending key services
Indian oil refining and marketing company, Nayara Energy, which is backed by Russian investment, has taken legal action against Microsoft. The company said the US-based tech firm had abruptly and unilaterally suspended essential services without any prior warning. "Microsoft is currently restricting Nayara Energy's access to its own data, proprietary tools, and products --despite these being acquired under fully paid-up licences," stated Nayara. Petition filed in Delhi HC The company has filed a petition in the Delhi High Court. It is seeking an interim injunction and immediate restoration of services to protect its rights and ensure continued access to important digital systems. According to Nayara, Microsoft did not discuss or notify the company before cutting off services. "This action has been taken unilaterally, without prior notice, consultation or recourse, and under the guise of compliance," the statement added. Sanctions lead to disruptions Nayara, which purchases large volumes of Russian oil, was recently sanctioned by the European Union. The company is mostly owned by Russian entities, including oil giant Rosneft. Although the sanctions are from the EU, Nayara claims that Microsoft -- a US-based firm -- is not legally required to enforce them under American or Indian law. Despite this, sources said Microsoft suspended Nayara's services last Tuesday. Since then, email accounts and Teams access for Nayara employees have been unavailable. Microsoft has not commented on the matter. Following the sanctions, at least two ships avoided loading refined products from Nayara's Vadinar facility. One crude tanker carrying Russian Urals was also diverted. In addition, Nayara's CEO resigned and was replaced by Sergey Denisov. Key role in India's energy sector Nayara Energy highlighted its important role in India's fuel economy. The company contributes around 8 per cent of the country's refining capacity and 7 per cent of its petrol pump network. It is also developing about 8 per cent of India's polypropylene capacity. While facing these challenges, Nayara said it remains committed to maintaining uninterrupted supply across India. Focus on domestic market and growth Operating under the motto 'In India, for India', Nayara mainly serves the domestic market through retail outlets, institutional sales, and partnerships with other oil marketing companies. The company is also investing in petrochemicals and clean energy, generating thousands of jobs. Nayara added that it complies fully with Indian regulations and continues to work closely with Indian authorities to maintain transparency and accountability.

Savy Infra & Logistics stock jumps nearly 20 pc in debut trade on NSE SME
New Delhi, Jul 28 (PTI) Shares of Savy Infra and Logistics on Monday ended with a premium of nearly 20 per cent against the issue price of Rs 120 per share on the NSE's SME platform Emerge. The shares were listed at Rs 136.50 per share on the NSE SME index, at a premium of 13.75 per cent. Later, it closed at Rs 143.30 apiece, a premium of 19.42 per cent on the bourse. The market capitalisation of the company stood at Rs 298.19 crore on the NSE SME. In volume terms, 32.29 lakh equity shares were traded on the exchange during the day. The Rs 70-crore initial public offering (IPO) of Savy Infra and Logistics garnered a stellar response from the investors by subscribing 114.50 times on the closing day of bidding on Wednesday last week. The initial share sale had a price band at Rs 114-120 per share. The issue is entirely a fresh issue of 58.32 lakh shares. Gandhinagar-based EPC player Savy Infra & Logistics is engaged in the business of engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) and logistics, with a focus on infrastructure projects. The company also offers logistics services through an asset-light model by renting trucks and drivers. The company reported revenue from operations of Rs 283.39 crore and profit after tax of Rs 23.88 crore in FY25.
