Why Olympic icon Dawn Fraser broke down in uncontrollable tears at Australian swimming trials

Daily Mail13-06-2025

Olympic icon Dawn Fraser was highly emotional at the Australian Swimming Trials in Adelaide on Thursday night - and given the scintillating performance of her goddaughter Lani Pallister in the 800m freestyle final, she had every reason to be.
In a touching moment, Fraser - who famously won gold in the 100m freestyle at three successive Summer Games between 1956 and 1964 - was seen poolside embracing Pallister after she created her own slice of sporting history.
On the fourth day of competition, Pallister, 23, smashed Ariarne Titmus 's Australian women's 800m freestyle record which she set at last year's Paris Olympics.
Pallister's slick time of 8:10.64 was also five seconds under her previous personal best - and the third-fastest swim of the year globally over the distance.
American superstar Katie Ledecky (8:04.12) and Canadian teenager Summer McIntosh (8:05.07) are the two swimmers Pallister is chasing.
'I'm pretty happy with that time,' she said post race.
It comes after Pallister earlier this year moved to the famed St Peters squad in Queensland under Titmus's coach, Dean Boxall.
She was previously trained by her mother Janelle Elford.
Meanwhile, Fraser, 87, recently revealed she lost 22kg following a fall on her driveway in December last year - and that she could have died following subsequent surgery.
'The pain was excruciating,' she told News Corp when reflecting on the incident at her Noosa home on Queensland's Sunshine Coast.
'I'd never felt pain like that before. I've never sort of fallen or broken anything in my life and it was a shock to me.'
And the cause of the fall? Fraser was trying to open a case of soft drink when she slipped on a small ledge and fell onto hard concrete.
Fraser's hospital X-rays were grim - they revealed a broken hip, four cracked ribs and potential internal bleeding.
Given her age, the anaesthetist warned 'Dawny' she may not survive the operation.
'When the anaesthetist came in and said I could die, that was frightening,' she said.

Tomos Williams injury leaves Farrell's Lions facing race to fill scrum-half slot

The British & Irish Lions are weighing up their scrum-half options after an injury to Tomos Williams that threatens to sideline the Welshman at the busiest stage of the squad's Australian tour. The head coach, Andy Farrell, said a decision on calling up a replacement would be made on Sunday, with Scotland's Ben White among the leading contenders to replace Williams at No 9. Williams contributed two tries in a fine all-round performance as the Lions eased to a 54-7 victory over Western Force but tweaked his left hamstring while diving over the line for his second score. It leaves the Lions with only two fit scrum-halves, one of whom – Jamison Gibson-Park – has been managing a strained glute muscle. Farrell said Gibson-Park would be fit to face the Queensland Reds on Wednesday but the Lions will need some cover if Williams is ruled out even for a short period, with Alex Mitchell as the only available option in the position. White has just arrived in New Zealand, where Scotland are due to kick off their summer tour against the Maori All Blacks next Saturday, and could easily hop on a plane to Brisbane if required. For the moment, Farrell is still waiting to learn the severity of the injury to Williams, the Premiership's player of the season with Gloucester. 'There was plenty of cramp last week, let's hope it is one of those,' said Farrell. 'He was playing well and I am sure there is a bit of concern there, but you can only deal with the here and now so fingers crossed.' Farrell, however, is adamant that there is no danger of Gibson-Park sitting out the Reds game. 'Jamison is fit and ready to go and has been training fully for the best part of a week. We are happy with that but we will only know [about Williams] in the morning. 'I don't what the timings are of that, with the flights, but you have to let these things settle down and give it a little bit of space. There is always something that is going to happen you are not quite sure about, that is the nature of the tour. We need to make the right call for the group.' Sir James Wates CBE has been appointed chair of the Rugby Football Union board. He takes over the role from Sir Bill Beaumont, who was named chair on an interim basis in December last year following the resignation of Tom Ilube. Wates is currently a board director of the Wates Group, a privately-owned construction, development and property service company in the UK and served as chairman between 2013 and 2023. PA Media Of their opening game in Australia, Farrell declared himself moderately satisfied with the result in the wake of the Lions' defeat by Argentina in Dublin last week. 'I am happy with the scoreline and how we got to that point because it wasn't always going our way. We fixed things up and played some good rugby and scored some nice tries.' 'He got a yellow card because of repeated infringements, which was fair enough, but you saw his point of difference, that is for sure. He is learning all the time and there is plenty to work on to make sure we are the team we want to be. He is part of that.' Pollock also received a positive review from the Lions' captain for the day, Dan Sheehan. 'I thought he was brilliant today,' the Ireland hooker said. 'He does his own thing, he plays his own way which is probably different to a lot of the forwards. I enjoy that kind of rugby: off the cuff, see what's in front of you and make it happen. With his skillset and speed he can certainly make it happen. 'It is just about trying to make sure he is doing the right thing for the team all the time. All these big games are massive for him, massive for all of us. He will just get better and better from here.'

Ryan Lochte's wife Kayla Reid takes 'betrayal' swipe at Olympian and claims she is 'broken' amid divorce

Ryan Lochte 's estranged wife, Kayla Rae Reid, appeared to accuse the Olympic swimmer of 'betrayal' as she opened up on how their marriage and divorce left her 'broken'. Reid announced earlier this month that she had filed for divorce from the six-time gold medalist in March, after seven years of marriage. At the time, the former Playboy playmate branded the divorce 'painful' and referenced 'trials we didn't choose or see coming', while Lochte said he was 'deeply grateful for the life we've built together'. But neither revealed exactly what led to their marriage becoming 'irretrievably broken'. As revealed by the Daily Mail, however, the couple owe nearly $270,000 in various debts, while they are also fighting over the custody of their three children - Caiden Zane, seven, Liv Rae, five, and Georgia June, one. Now, Reid has taken to social media to post more cryptic comments about the divorce, including that she is 'stepping into the best chapter of her life'. The former Playboy playmate posted a series of pictures and videos alongside 'reminders' of what she is 'telling herself right now'. 'Sometimes God allows the betrayal... because it leads to the breakthrough,' one read. 'Divorce isn't the end of my story. It's the beginning of my rebirth... I didn't choose to be broken, but I'm choosing to rebuild.' She added: 'You're stepping into the best chapter of your life - you just have to heal first... most people have no idea what I've endured. 'Ignore their opinions. Truth always reveals itself.' Kayla's petition for divorce, filed in north central Florida's Alachua County, asked the court for 'sole parenting responsibility' or at least 'ultimate decision-making authority' and 'majority timesharing,' Daily Mail previously reported. 'Wife is fit and proper to assume sole parental responsibility for the minor children of the parties. Shared parental responsibility would be detrimental to the children,' her lawyers wrote. Kayla's petition for divorce, filed in Florida, asked the court for 'sole parenting responsibility' However, Lochte responded by insisting it was in the best interests of Caiden, Liv and Georgia for their parents to share custody. But his April 28 counter-petition, prepared by attorney Justin Jacobson, also included multiple errors when it came to details of their birthdays and places of birth. Lochte said all three were born in May but – as Kayla pointed out in a subsequent filing – Caiden was born June 8, 2017, Liv was born June 17, 2019, and Georgia was born June 21, 2023. The gold medalist swimmer and former Playboy Playmate tied the knot in Palm Springs, California, in January 2018, after previously going public with their relationship in 2016.
