Aarons aims to show 'best version of me' at Ibrox

BBC News16 hours ago
Max Aarons says he wants to show Rangers fans "the best version of me" during his loan spell at Ibrox next season. The 25-year-old full-back has joined from Bournemouth having also had a loan spell at Valencia last season.Aarons broke into the Norwich City side as a highly-rated youngster, with then manager Daniel Farke once saying he would not sell him "even for £100m".The England Under-21 international joined Bournemouth in a £7m move in 2023 but found his first-team opportunities limited in recent times.Aarons admits this latest loan move comes at a crucial time in his career."I wasn't getting the games at Bournemouth last season that I was happy with," he said."Obviously I went on loan to Valencia and it was a similar situation there. So I think this is one that I'm coming in here off the back of maybe not having played as many games as I wanted to last season."I drew a line under that and I'm coming in here and hopefully Rangers fans will definitely see the best version of me."Aarons says the prospect of working under manager Russell Martin, with whom he played alongside at Norwich, helped sell the idea of moving to Rangers."The size of this club - you know about it even despite being English and playing in England most of my career," he said."You know about Rangers and you know the size of this football club."And then, when that matched up with this manager, who I know very well but I haven't worked under him before, everything I've heard from the way he is and his staff as well, I think it just matches up perfectly."I think we can have a real successful season. That's why I came here."Obviously I played with the manager here. It crossed over a little bit and then he actually came on loan here as a player."That was when I first broke through at Norwich. So we had a really good relationship back then and, especially with Matt Gill, the assistant here. He was my under-18s and under-21s coach."I think everything just matched up perfectly and it was something I really wanted to do."

Horse racing tips: ‘He goes handicapping off a good mark' – Templegate's Sunday NAP can run a big race

TEMPLEGATE tackles Sunday's racing confident of bashing the bookies. Back a horse by clicking their odds below. DESERT HEART (4.05 Ayr, nap). He has been brought along slowly with promising fourth-placed efforts on each start. He enjoyed stepping up to this distance at Sandown last month and starts of handicapping from a very fair mark of 79. With just three runs under his belt there should be a lot more to come with the yard in excellent form too. JACK N JONES (2.35 Market Rasen, nb) Another at the start of her career with lots of improvement to come. She showed promise in a couple of bumpers and took really well to hurdling when second on debut at Newton Abbot. Trainer Jamie Snowden is going well and she doesn't need a lot more to get off the mark. MR PROFESSOR (3.30 Ayr, treble). He takes a fair drop in class here after a solid effort at Newcastle last time. He wasn't helped by trouble in running before finishing strongly. He is best over this trip and has come down the weights. Templegate's tips Commercial content notice: Taking one of the offers featured in this article may result in a payment to The Sun. Rangers 'target' £10m-rated Crystal Palace star as final piece of three winger transfer shortlist revealed

Jesurun Rak-Sakyi is the latest winger to emerge on Rangers' transfer radar Rangers are reportedly keen on a move for Crystal Palace winger Jesurun Rak-Sakyi – as their drive to add quality in the wide positions ramps up. The 22-year-old spent last season on loan at Sheffield United, scoring seven and assisting two as the Blades made the playoff final but narrowly missed out on promotion to the Premier League. ‌ Remaining in the Championship appears to have torpedoed their chances of signing him permanently and that has opened the door for Russell Martin to make a move. ‌ He's now back at Palace and the Scottish Sun say Rangers are chasing a deal to bring him to Ibrox. Palace reportedly want £10m to sell him this summer and it's unclear as yet whether Rangers plan to negotiate over a permanent deal or bring him in on an initial loan – though meeting anything close to that price tag may be contingent on securing major funds for Hamza Igamane first. It comes as the new Ibrox owners shift their focus to strengthening in the wide positions with reports today suggesting they plan to sign up to three wingers in the coming weeks. Thelo Aasgaard was signed today but he is viewed more as a number ten by Martin. As things stand, the only wide options available to Russell Martin are Oscar Cortes, Rabbi Matondo and Ross McCausland – a thin pool that lacks the proven, consistent quality the club are seeking in those positions. Reports in Brazil today claimed Rangers are interested in 'Brazilian magician' Weslley Patati, a versatile attacker who primarily plays off the right wing. ‌ As things stand, the only wide options available to Russell Martin are Oscar Cortes, Rabbi Matondo and Ross McCausland – a thin pool that lacks the proven, consistent quality the club are seeking in those positions. Patati and Rak-Sakyi may well be two of them, while they've also been linked with Como's Samuel Ballet this week and the 24-year-old could be another on the way. Rangers are also closing in on deals for defenders Conor Coady and Nasser Djiga as they beef things up at both ends of the pitch. ‌ You can get all the news you need on our dedicated Rangers and Celtic pages, and sign up to our newsletters to make sure you never miss a beat throughout the season. Celtic pounced on transfer trend in post Covid era and it's part of why Euro giants now love Scottish players

The Hoops dipped into Japan for the same reason European football's big guns now love a Scot Bjorn Hamberg believes the fallout from the Covid pandemic has forced European big guns to make Scottish football 's market a must-go port of call. The former Feyenoord assistant boss has watched a host of clubs look for tartan talent after traditionally turning their nose up at recruiting talent from these shores. ‌ He said: 'It's great see Scottish players now making a mark at clubs across Europe. It's a relatively new frontier and the Covid pandemic has been a factor in that. ‌ 'Clubs had to reassess how to do business and run their recruitment departments at a more sustainable level. 'A lot of these clubs had to look deeper into different markets and Scotland has become one of them where value for money can be found. 'It's similar to what Celtic did with the Japanese market – and they did amazingly well. "It has been too easy to target proven footballers and players for the here-and-now. 'Scouting for talent is now about having a belief you can find quality footballers anywhere in the world. 'The trend for British players moving abroad is now well established with the likes of Jude Bellingham and Trent Alexander-Arnold being Real Madrid players. ‌ 'You look back and see David Beckham moving to AC Milan and PSG – at the time it seemed unbelievable. 'Now it's far more commonplace and Scottish players are part of that trend as the lines are far blurrier with moves from country to country in Europe. ‌ ' Lawrence Shankland moved to Beerschot in Belgium a few years ago and is now a Scotland striker. 'Moves like that are now routine. Scott McTominay and Billy Gilmour have had an amazing season as title winners at Napoli. Josh Doig and Lewis Ferguson are doing well playing in Serie A.'
