Hello to everybody: Aotearoa's friendliest artist Sallie Culy

RNZ News08-06-2025
If cities can be lonely places no one told artist Sallie Culy.
A familiar face on the streets of inner city Pōneke Wellington, Sallie counts many people she has met a friend. Its an approach to life summed up in the title of a book of her drawings recently published:
Hello to Everybody
.
Sallie has Williams Syndrome, a rare genetic disorder that causes developmental and learning disabilities. But she has turned impediments into advantages.
Making it her business to make her city a friendlier place, she has also become celebrated for her art. Felt pen drawings of friends, family and celebrities, ranging from Elton John to Beyoncé,
Culy exhibited in December with up and coming dealer gallery Envy, and in 2022 her drawings were selected to be blown up big and lit for three months as a Courtney Place Lightbox public art project.
As an artist Sallie has a naive graphic style more familiar from childhood, but that belies how strong her bold wiry use of line and colour are. It's a style that arguably also makes her work appealing to everybody. Smiles welcome us everywhere, reminding us of the joy in people around us.
Hailing from a family of skateboarders and artists, skateboarding is also a common theme - Sallie has even been called a local celebrity at Waitangi Skate Park by Wellington City Council.
Hello to Everybody
has been published by Bad News books and is widely available.

Mana Moana Wellington Shows With Signature Choir And NZSO Now Sold Out

Press Release – NZSO Mana Moana celebrates two worlds of music, with the NZSO led by acclaimed conductor Brent Stewart, and each performance hosted by talented actor and comedian Tofiga Fepuleai. Wellington has again embraced the hit show Mana Moana and its spectacular fusion of symphony and songs of the Pacific. Both performances by the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and the 50-strong Wellington-based Signature Choir this Thursday and Friday at the Michael Fowler Centre are sold out. Mana Moana celebrates two worlds of music, with the NZSO led by acclaimed conductor Brent Stewart, and each performance hosted by talented actor and comedian Tofiga Fepulea'i. 'We are incredibly humbled and grateful to return home to two sold-out shows,' says Signature Choir Founder and Music Director Helen Tupai. 'After selling out back-to-back performances at the iconic Sydney Opera House in June, coming back to where our Mana Moana journey began and reuniting with the world-class NZSO is the perfect way to close our 2025 Mana Moana season. These sold-out shows are a testament to our communities' unwavering support, and we cannot wait to put on an unforgettable homecoming show!' Following 2022's sensational debut in Wellington and a hit performance with the NZSO in Auckland in 2023, Mana Moana reached new heights this year with a second show at Auckland's Spark Arena in May. Sydney audiences loved every minute of the choir's historic performances with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra last month. 'What an incredible performance! The energy in the room was electric. So privileged to experience this iconic moment,' an audience member told ABC Pacific. Wellington audiences on 24 and 25 July will again experience an energetic, unique, and emotional celebration, bringing traditional and contemporary songs from Samoa, Tonga, Fiji, Cook Islands, Niue and Tokelau. The exciting music selection blends beloved favourites from the previous shows with fresh new arrangements, offering an even richer experience for audiences. The stunning mix of traditional and contemporary songs includes the Samoan classic Manu o le Vaveao, Nepituno —written by Queen Salote Tupou III to commemorate the 1953 Royal Tour of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth's visit to Tonga—and an exhilarating medley featuring some of the most iconic Fijian songs, and much more. In 2022 a collaborative journey between the NZSO and Signature Choir to celebrate and promote the languages and stories of Pasifika. Their aim was to create high-quality audio recordings and videos of Pasifika songs in partnership with RNZ. This was then followed by a live performance at the Michael Fowler Centre where audience-recorded videos from the show have accumulated in over 1 million views on social media, highlighting the massive impact Mana Moana had and resulted in an incredible musical experience in 2023 and 2025 at Spark Arena.

Tourism agency enlists Bollywood couple to woo Indian tourists

Actors and real-life couple Rajkummar Rao and Patralekhaa appear in a Tourism New Zealand campaign set in the country's top tourism sites. Photo: Supplied / Tourism New Zealand Tourism New Zealand has launched a #BeyondTheFilter campaign in India to promote the South Pacific nation as an "authentic, less-crowded" destination for tourists. Featuring Hindi actors and real-life couple Rajkummar Rao and Patralekhaa, the campaign comprises a five-part cinematic mini-series. "The mini-series taps into the Indian consumer's growing appetite for authentic, unfiltered travel experiences that prioritise genuine connection and rejuvenation over curated social content," said a spokesperson for Tourism New Zealand, the agency responsible for promoting the country as a travel destination. "The content showcases New Zealand's landscapes, unique experiences and culture, wellness offerings and cuisine while demonstrating the ease and appeal of autumn travel - highlighting cosy weather, settled conditions and fewer crowds - perfectly addressing the digital fatigue amongst our target audience. "This aligns seamlessly with our global 100% Pure New Zealand brand focusing on connection and fulfilment." Tourism New Zealand has engaged trade partners such as Thomas Cook to enhance package conversion, releasing the mini-series across all its channels and on partner platforms. "To date, it has performed very well, with the launch event in Mumbai being attended by 33 media outlets, generating 379 million reach and 100 percent positive sentiment," the agency said. It had earlier unveiled a winter marketing campaign in March in Mumbai that targeted Indian visitors. Indian actor Rajkummar Rao Photo: Supplied / Tourism New Zealand India is New Zealand's fifth-largest market. According to Tourism New Zealand data, 81,400 visitors travelled from India in the year to 31 May. "This was down 5.5 percent year on year but represents a 122 percent recovery compared to 2019 (pre-Covid) arrivals," the spokesperson said. "Indian visitors are important to year-round visitation with 75 percent arriving outside the December-February summer period. On average, Indian visitors have a strong length of stay at 17 days, and 40 percent visit four or more regions." Tourism New Zealand has identified India as a market that has a strong opportunity to convert into real visitation. "India represents one of [Tourism New Zealand's] markets with enormous potential, with 14 million people in Mumbai, New Delhi and Bengaluru actively considering a trip to New Zealand," the spokesperson said. "However, the conversion to booking is low. "The alignment between the Indian holiday period and our shoulder seasons creates a year-round tourism opportunity that benefits both destinations and visitors seeking authentic, less-crowded travel experiences. "As part of our ongoing strategy to increase arrivals to New Zealand ... Rajkummar Rao and Patralekhaa were identified as relevant key opinion leaders within the market who can reach a significant number of people actively considering a trip to New Zealand," the spokesperson said. In 2015, Bollywood actor Sidharth Malhotra was appointed as Tourism New Zealand's first ambassador for India. Asked how the agency chose its ambassadors, the spokesperson for Tourism New Zealand said it "strategically selected high-profile advocates or influencers to support campaigns to grow the sector in New Zealand" from time to time. "Advocates are trusted, liked and well-known people who share stories on our behalf and support authentic destination storytelling," the spokesperson said.
