AI solves superbug mystery in two days after scientists took 10 years
The tech giant's latest AI development is dubbed 'co-scientist' and is designed to act as a colleague for researchers, with its own ideas, theories and analysis.
Scientists at Imperial College London had spent a decade solving a mystery in the field of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), which creates superbugs that are immune to antibiotics and are expected to kill millions of people a year by 2050.
Using traditional research methods, the team had theorised and then proved how different bacteria are able to accrue new DNA which can make them more dangerous, and its study is now in the process of being published by Cell, the peer-reviewed journal.
After the work was finished, the scientists at Imperial partnered with Google to help test out the AI co-scientist feature.
The researchers asked the co-scientist – which uses many of Google's Gemini AI models to pit various existing data and novel theories against each other – for ideas on how bacteria become immune to antibiotics.
Prof José Penadés, who co-led the experimental work at Imperial, told The Telegraph: 'We worked for many years to understand this thing and we found the mechanism.
'Capsids (the protein shell of a virus) are produced with DNA inside and no tails. They have the ability to take a tail from different viruses and affect different species.'
While the team knew about this tail-gathering process, nobody else in the world did. Imperial's revelations were private, there was nothing publicly available, and nothing was written online about it.
The scientists then asked the co-scientist AI, using a couple of written sentences, if it had any ideas as to how the bacteria operated.
Two days later, the AI made its own suggestions, which included what the Imperial scientists knew to be the right answer.
'This was the top one, it was the first hypothesis it suggested. It was, as you can imagine, quite shocking,' said Prof Penadés.
Dr Tiago Dias da Costa, a bacterial pathogenesis expert at Imperial and co-author of the study, added: 'It's about 10 years of research which was condensed in two days by co-scientist.'
While the AI was able to spit out the correct hypothesis within 48 hours of being asked, it was unable to do the experiments to prove it, which themselves took years of work.
However, the experts say if they had been given the hypothesis at the start of their project, before they drew up the theory themselves, it would have saved years of work.
'The system gives you an answer and that needs to be experimentally validated,' added Dr da Costa. 'You cannot take the answer as a universal truth, so the scientific process would still have to happen.
'But 90 per cent of our experiments in the lab are failed experiments, and imagine if we have an AI collaborator that could guide us in reducing the failed experiments.
'Imagine how much time, grant money and, ultimately, taxpayer money we could save.'
The Google AI co-scientist system is still in its infancy and will continue to be refined with further work. But it is quick, easy to use, and simple, the Imperial researchers said.
The Imperial scientists were given a host of other ideas by the technology as to what may be driving AMR, some of which are now the focus of real-world research to see if they are also correct.
This includes a suggested explanation for a 70-year biological mystery, which preliminary experimental data suggest holds promise.
When the scientists, who have spent their entire careers trying to understand and unpick the mysteries of the microbial world, saw the results of the Google AI, they were astonished.
Prof Penadés was shopping on a weekend when the email came through from Google with the suggested hypotheses from co-scientist.
'I said to the person I was with to leave me alone for one hour in order to digest this,' he told The Telegraph.
'Half of me was thinking that this cannot be true and it is amazing, and the other half found it very scary. I have this feeling that we are involved in something that will change the way we do science. This is my personal feeling.'
AI is already widely used in science. It includes the Nobel Prize-winning AlphaFold technology, developed at Google DeepMind, which uses AI to correctly predict the shapes, structures and behaviours of proteins.
Scientists can now see, just from DNA code, how a protein looks and how it will interact with the body, drugs and other entities.
A tester version of co-scientist is now to be made freely available to researchers, and an application programming interface (API)I to allow websites to use the base technology is also to be published.
The co-scientist was also tested with researchers at Stanford University and Houston Methodist in the US to see if it could identify new targets to treat disease, and if any pre-existing drugs could treat other diseases.
The AI found a new target to try to treat liver fibrosis, and suggested that the drug Vorionostat, which is used to treat cancer of immune cells, could help treat the condition.
The Government is currently in the process of trying to ramp up the UK's own AI infrastructure, with a focus on turning world-leading academic research into new uses for AI and commercial applications.
Last week, the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology approved a new project to use AI in science conducted in the UK.
This includes world-first trials that will integrate AI into the peer-review process to try to free up researchers from some of the more time-consuming tasks which distract from doing actual research.
A total of £4.8 million of taxpayers' money has been shared among 23 research projects dedicated to using AI in science, including at Bath and Sheffield, to see if AI can improve peer-review.
Lord Vallance, the science minister, told The Telegraph last week: 'AI presents new opportunities in a range of sectors, and if researchers can demonstrate its potential to increase transparency, robustness and trust in science, then this could pave the way to freeing them up from mundane paperwork tasks while driving growth.'

'Marathon at F1 speed': China bids to lap US in AI leadership
Beyond dancing robots and eager-to-help digital avatars, Shanghai's World AI Conference saw China stake its claim to global artificial intelligence leadership and frame itself as a clear alternative to the United States. Assumptions that the US was far ahead in the fast-moving field were upended this year when Chinese start-up DeepSeek unveiled a chatbot that matched top American systems for an apparent fraction of the cost. With AI now at the forefront of the superpowers' tech race, the World AI Conference (WAIC) that ended Tuesday saw China set out its case to take charge on shaping its global governance too. China, the United States and other major economies are "engaged in a marathon at Formula One speed", said Steven Hai, assistant professor of tech innovation at Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University. "Which country will attain the upper hand can only be assessed dynamically over the course of development." China and the United States dominate the AI sector -- only 10 to 15 percent of models developed in recent years were built without either's participation, according to Epoch AI, a non-profit research institute. While US companies like Google and OpenAI are still industry-leading, the institute labelled 78 percent of Chinese models "state-of-the-art" compared to 70 percent of models built with American participation. Beijing's stated aim is to become the world's leading AI "innovation centre" by 2030. "Now China is neck-and-neck with the United States in terms of core tech, that play (for global leadership) is more relevant than ever," said Tom Nunlist, associate director for tech and data policy at Trivium China. "With a solid AI offering and the US turning inward, the question is will Beijing's vision gain greater global traction?" In May, Microsoft's Brad Smith told the US Senate that "the number-one factor" in the tech race "is whose technology is most broadly adopted in the rest of the world". - 'Sovereign AI' - China's offer is technical and economical. "One of the biggest differences (with the US sector) is that most of the leading models in China... are open-weight and open-source," former Google CEO Eric Schmidt told an audience at WAIC. That means they can be adapted by other countries to fit their own needs, said George Chen, partner at Washington-based policy consultancy The Asia Group. "We already see some countries like Mongolia, Kazakhstan, even Pakistan are trying to adopt the DeepSeek model to build their own," he said. "China has a chance to win in the aspect of sovereign AI to export its model to those countries." The comparative low cost of Chinese technology -- software but also hardware, for example through firms like Huawei -- will be a big factor, especially for developing countries, Chen added. On Monday another Chinese start-up, Zhipu, announced its new AI model -- also open-source -- would cost less than DeepSeek to use. In June, OpenAI accused Zhipu of having close ties with Chinese authorities and noted it was working with governments and state-owned firms across Southeast Asia, the Middle East and Africa. "The goal is to lock Chinese systems and standards into emerging markets before US or European rivals can," it said. Washington has moved to protect its lead in AI, expanding efforts to curb exports of state-of-the-art chips to China in recent years. "While limiting China's share of the global AI hardware market, (these measures) have accelerated indigenous innovation and led Chinese firms to exploit regulatory loopholes," said assistant professor Hai, referring to "rife" smuggling and circumvention. - Issues of trust? - Other challenges to homegrown firms include the closed nature of the Chinese internet, and "general issues of trust when it comes to using Chinese tech", Trivium's Nunlist said. At WAIC, China sought to present itself as a responsible power. Premier Li Qiang emphasised the risks of AI and pledged to share technology with other nations, especially developing ones. His remarks contrasted sharply with US President Donald Trump's aggressive low-regulation "AI Action Plan" launched just days before and explicitly aimed at cementing US dominance in the field. China released its own action plan at WAIC, following a meeting attended by delegates from dozens of countries. Li also announced the establishment of a China-led organisation for international AI cooperation. However, China's foreign ministry did not respond to a request from AFP for details on the set-up of the organisation -- including any international participants -- and several foreign delegates said they had not been briefed on the announcement beforehand. Analyst Grace Shao wrote it was clear AI was still in its "infancy stage". "You can sense that vibrant energy but also the immaturity of the space," she wrote on Substack. Google is finally fixing an Android update bug that's been an annoyance for weeks
Rita El Khoury / Android Authority TL;DR Google is addressing an issue that's been affecting the installation of Play System updates on devices running Android 16. The company says it has identified the problem and will resolve it with an upcoming update. The issue also affected our Pixel 9a running Android 16, and many others reported the problem on other Pixel phones as well. I've been dealing with an update issue on my Pixel 9a running Android 16 for weeks, and it turns out I'm not the only one. For a while now, I haven't been able to install new Google Play system updates successfully. Every time I tapped the update button, the phone detected an available update and began installing it. However, partway through the process, the installation would abruptly stop and show a 'Failed to update' error message. At first, I brushed it off as a problem with a specific Play System update. But just as I was considering a full factory reset, I discovered that many others running Android 16 or Android 16 QPR builds were experiencing the same issue. Thankfully, Google has acknowledged the problem and is taking action. In a new support article, Google says it's aware of an issue that's preventing some Android 16 and Android 16 beta devices from installing the latest Google Play system update. (If you're unsure where to find that, go to Settings > Security & Privacy > System & updates > Google Play system update.) The good news is that Google says there's no need to factory reset your phone. A fix has been identified and will be included in an upcoming Google Play system update. Hopefully, this means the issue will be resolved soon, and we'll finally be able to install Play system updates again.
