Sunderland's bid to return to the Premier League after an eight-year absence -- a dark period that has included a spell in the third tier -- remains alive.
All's fair in love and war. Sunderland knew the same and acted accordingly, as even their groundsmen embarked on shrewd tactics to aid their Championship side's dream of promotion to the Premier League.
In the club's bid to give any advantage possible, the Sunderland ground staff spent all day yesterday moving their advertising boards in by two metres at the Stadium of Light ahead of their play-off second leg against Coventry.
The Sky Blues have scored more headers & more goals from crosses than any other team in the Premier League & EFL this season, with Milan van Ewijk known to launch throw-ins into the danger area.

Well, one could guess it worked in their favour since Sunderland reached the Championship play-off final most dramatically with Dan Ballard's goal in the dying seconds of extra-time sealed a 3-2 aggregate victory against Coventry.
Regis Le Bris' side trailed to Ephron Mason-Clark's goal late in the second half of the semi-final second leg.
But, with a penalty shoot-out moments away, Ballard headed home in stoppage time to earn a 1-1 draw and spark wild celebrations from over 46,000 fans packed into the Stadium of Light.
United finished in third place, 14 points clear of fourth-placed Sunderland in the regular season, with both teams winning one against each other this season.
Sunderland's bid to return to the Premier League after an eight-year absence — a dark period that has included a spell in the third tier — remains alive.
But Le Bris' men will have to improve significantly on a nervous display that nearly gifted a place in the final to Coventry.
Sunderland will face Sheffield United in the play-off final at Wembley on May 24.

Liverpool's Luis Diaz Joins Bayern Munich In £65.5m Deal: Report

Last Updated: Liverpool agreed to sell Luis Díaz to Bayern Munich for £65.5 million. Díaz's exclusion from a friendly match fueled transfer rumors which have come true. Liverpool have agreed to sell Colombian winger Luis Díaz to Bayern Munich in a deal worth £65.5 million, including performance-based add-ons, as per reports. Earlier this summer, The Athletic reported that Liverpool rejected an offer worth €67.5m (£58.6m; $78.8m) from Bayern for Diaz but, as reported on Friday, talks resumed over a deal for the Colombian. Liverpool were only prepared to sell the forward for what they considered to be his full market value, with the club already securing transfer fees for the sales of Jarell Quansah, Caoimhin Kelleher, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Nathaniel Phillips this summer. Díaz was notably absent from Liverpool's matchday squad in their pre-season friendly against AC Milan on Saturday, fueling speculation about an imminent transfer. The Colombian international, who scored 17 goals in all competitions last season, played a crucial role in helping Arne Slot's side win the Premier League title—their second in five years. Slot confirmed after the match that Díaz's exclusion was directly linked to ongoing negotiations regarding his future. Díaz joined Liverpool from FC Porto in January 2022 for an initial £37.5 million. His potential switch to Bayern is seen as a mutually beneficial move: Liverpool cash in on a player at his peak value, while Bayern secure a dynamic winger to bolster their wide options. The transfer also reflects Liverpool's evolving strategy under Slot, as the Reds seek to refresh their frontline and balance the books after significant investments over the past few seasons. Liverpool have been among Europe's most active clubs in the summer transfer window. The Premier League champions recently pulled off the headline signing of Florian Wirtz, long considered one of their top targets, and added Hugo Ekitike last week—two marquee acquisitions signaling a shift toward a younger, attack-minded squad. The Reds also continue to be linked with Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak, underlining their intent to rebuild after a disappointing 2024–25 campaign. Darwin Núñez, another Liverpool forward who has faced transfer speculation this summer, was also left out of the Milan clash. Slot clarified that Núñez's absence was due to fitness reasons rather than transfer talks, but uncertainty remains over the Uruguayan's long-term future at Anfield. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Man United Bigger Than The Club World Cup! US Record Crowd Recorded For Friendly vs West Ham

Last Updated: Manchester United's 2-1 win over West Ham at MetLife Stadium set a new U.S. soccer attendance record with 82,566 fans. Bruno Fernandes scored both goals. Manchester United's 2–1 victory over West Ham United at MetLife Stadium on Saturday wasn't just a showcase of pre-season Premier League football—it was a historic night for U.S. soccer attendance. A staggering crowd of 82,566 fans packed the stadium, setting a new record for the largest attendance at a football match in the United States in 2025. The turnout eclipsed the previous high set earlier this year during the FIFA Club World Cup final, which drew 81,118 spectators. The match, part of United's U.S. pre-season tour, saw The MetLife Stadium, home to the NFL's New York Giants and New York Jets, transform into a sea of red and claret as supporters turned out in full force. On the field, Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes stole the spotlight with a commanding performance, scoring both goals in the victory. The 30-year-old Portuguese midfielder was clinical and composed, reminding fans why he was named United's Player of the Year last season. The match was competitive throughout, with West Ham pulling one back in the second half, but the result remained in United's favor. The quality of play, combined with the electric crowd atmosphere, created a memorable experience for all in attendance. Saturday's attendance milestone underscores the surging interest in European football among American audiences. With elite clubs like Manchester United, Real Madrid, Arsenal, and Bayern Munich regularly including the U.S. on their pre-season itineraries, fan engagement has soared. Events like the Club World Cup, which made its U.S. debut this year, and the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup—hosted jointly by the U.S., Canada, and Mexico—are contributing to a soccer boom in the region. MetLife Stadium, which will host matches during the 2026 World Cup, continues to prove itself as a prime venue for the sport's biggest occasions. Following the record-breaking night, Manchester United will continue their U.S. tour with upcoming fixtures on the West Coast. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Watch: Arsenal Unveil Viktor Gyokeres Ahead Of Newcastle United Friendly Match

Last Updated: Arsenal signed Swedish striker Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting for £55 million plus add-ons. He scored 97 goals in 102 matches for Sporting and will wear the number 14 shirt. Arsenal unveiled new signing Viktor Gyokeres ahead of their pre-season friendly game against Newcastle United in Singapore. The Swedish striker signed with the London-based Premier League club from Sporting on a five-year contract. 'To come here to a club on Arsenal's level, I think it's going to help me perform even better with all the amazing players in this team. I'm really excited to get going," Gyokeres had said after the move. WATCH: Great to have you with us, Viktor 👊 — Arsenal (@Arsenal) July 27, 2025 Though financial details were not disclosed, British media reported that Arsenal agreed to an upfront fee of £55 million ($73.89 million) plus approximately £8 million in add-ons for the 27-year-old. 'We're absolutely delighted to welcome Viktor Gyokeres to the club," coach Mikel Arteta had said in a club statement. 'The consistency he has shown in his performances and availability have been outstanding, and his goal contributions speak for themselves." Signing a striker had been a priority for Arsenal during the close-season as Mikel Arteta aimed to strengthen a squad capable of winning the title after finishing runners-up in the last three Premier League seasons. Arsenal lacked a natural number nine for much of last season, finishing 10 points behind champions Liverpool and scoring 17 fewer goals. Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz alternated up front until injuries sidelined them in January and February, leaving midfielder Mikel Merino to step in during the final stages of the season. Who Is Viktor Gyokeres? Gyokeres joined Sporting from Coventry City for around £20 million in 2023. He has since scored 97 goals and registered 28 assists in 102 matches during his two seasons in Lisbon. Gyokeres helped Sporting win the league and the Portuguese Cup last season, scoring 54 goals in 52 games in all competitions, including a hat-trick against Manchester City in the Champions League. The Sweden international, who had a brief spell at Brighton & Hove Albion, will wear the number 14 shirt and join the squad on their pre-season tour in Asia. Gyokeres is Arsenal's fifth signing of the close-season, following winger Noni Madueke, goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga, and midfielders Christian Norgaard and Martin Zubimendi. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
