The Utah Mammoth NHL team has pursued legal action to safeguard its brand name and has filed a federal lawsuit against Mammoth Hockey LLC, the maker of hockey equipment, amidst escalating trademark conflict.

escalates
Utah's newest NHL team, the Utah Mammoth, is advancing to the next stage of its team development saga—not on the playing field, but inside the courtroom. The league has filed a complaint against Mammoth Hockey LLC, a business that manufactures premium hockey bags, following the latter's assertion that the naming of the NHL team "Mammoth" infringes its trademark rights.
As per the court records, Mammoth Hockey initially favored the use of the name by the NHL team as part of the branding exercise through fans in 2024 and 2025. A June 2024 Facebook post, filed in the lawsuit, indicated that Mammoth Hockey was flagging the "Mammoth" choice using a thumbs-up emoji and statement.
Mammoth Hockey went so far as to contact Chris Armstrong, president of the Utah Mammoth, in April 2025 to discuss a potential cooperation.

That position changed, though, in June 2025, when the company started making claims of trademark disputes and threatened potential litigation. SEG Hockey, which owns the Utah Mammoth, sent a letter back rejecting that assertion and highlighting distinctions in logo designs, colors, and markets.
NHL team asks court to clarify in growing trademark dispute
The Utah Mammoth is now requesting the court to resolve the disagreement under the U.S. Declaratory Judgment Act based on the bag company's unclear threats of a lawsuit as a continued and unacceptable source of uncertainty.
Attorneys for the team said the team's branding efforts have been stalled by the unresolved dispute.

While the Utah Mammoth gets set for their NHL entrance, this trademark dispute is an unusual off-ice obstacle for a company still planting roots. With both parties dug in and a court case in progress, it will now fall to the courts to rule on whether Utah's newest professional team can finally—and permanently—be known as the Mammoth.
