Scientists to educate ryots on best farming methods

HYDERABAD: To raise awareness among farmers on key agricultural issues, the state government is set to launch the 'Rythu Mungitlo Shastravettalu' (Scientists at farmer's doorstep) programme.
As part of the initiative, scientists from Professor Jayashankar Agriculture University will visit villages to engage with farmers.
Agriculture Minister Thummala Nageswara Rao on Sunday announced that the programme will be conducted in 1,200 villages from May 5 to June 13.
'About 200 teams of scientists have been formed, 100 of them will cover villages in south Telangana, while 50 teams each will operate in central and north Telangana districts,' he explained.
The teams will interact with farmers between 8 am and 12 noon, focusing on awareness about reducing use of urea, fertilisers and pesticides, as well as promoting crop diversification and water conservation. By analysing the challenges faced by farmers, scientists will provide advice and make recommendations. Students from the Agricultural University, public representatives and government teachers will also take part in the programme, the minister said.
Reaffirming the state government's commitment to farmer welfare and agricultural development, Nageswara Rao urged all farmers to actively participate in the initiative and help make it a success.

Brazilian national arrested at OR Tambo in R4.2m cocaine bust

A 25-year-old Brazilian national was arrested at OR Tambo International Airport on Tuesday for allegedly attempting to smuggle cocaine with an estimated street value of R4.2 million into South Africa. The arrest followed an intelligence-driven operation conducted by a collaborative team made up of Crime Intelligence Counter Narcotics Intel Gauteng, the ORTIA SAPS Tactical Team, the Border Management Authority (BMA), and private security personnel. Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Amanda van Wyk said they had intercepted the woman shortly after her flight landed from São Paulo in Brazil, via Doha in Qatar. 'A search of [the suspect's] luggage uncovered around 10 kilograms of cocaine concealed inside, and the suspect was subsequently taken for a medical examination to determine if cocaine-filled bullets had been ingested,' she added. Van Wyk said the seizure formed part of ongoing law enforcement efforts to dismantle transnational drug syndicates operating between South Africa and other countries. According to SAPS, more than 25 drug traffickers have been arrested at OR Tambo International Airport alone since the start of this year. Van Wyk said the woman was expected to appear in the Kempton Park Magistrate's Court soon.

Forensic report recommends disciplinary action against IDT CEO over R800m oxygen plant tender

A forensic investigation into a more than R800 million oxygen plant tender awarded by the Independent Development Trust (IDT) has recommended that disciplinary action be taken against IDT CEO Tebogo Malaka, general manager for supply chain management Molebedi Sisi and other officials. Minister of Public Works and Infrastructure Dean Macpherson made the announcement during a press briefing into the reports' findings on Tuesday. This comes after a forensic investigation conducted by PricewaterhouseCoopers into the tender. Macpherson launched an independent investigation into the IDT last December over allegations of corruption involving the pressure swing adsorption oxygen plant tender. By April, Macpherson had also moved to stabilise the entity's board, removing two members appointed by his predecessor, Sihle Zikalala, now his deputy, and ensuring that it had a quorum, which had been lacking since 2023.
