Polyphia are making a 'heavy' new album with System Of A Down and Babymetal
Polyphia have teased a 'heavy' new album featuring System Of A Down singer Serj Tankian and Babymetal.
Guitarist Tim Henson offers a glimpse of what the Plano, Texas four-piece are cooking up to Guitar World, saying that where latest album Remember That You Will Die explored multiple genres, their next effort will zero in on metal.
'It's heavy,' he says. 'That's exciting for us, and I think last year was really eye-opening for us in terms of how we should start composing for the live performance.
'Playing a nylon-string to 80,000 people is a little like… when you think of a nylon-string, you think of a dude in a coffee shop, right? So, it's a little disconnect there. We're excited to really hone that in and really make the music bigger for that kind of audience now.'
Henson adds that there will be plenty of eight-string guitar. 'We're just making new guitars that don't exist for the sole purpose of writing something really, really cool with it, so that if you want to learn it, you're gonna have no choice but to buy that guitar!'
Moving on to guest spots, he continues: 'We have one with Serj from System Of A Down and we just finished a second Babymetal collab – that's for their record, though, and we're working on one to send them for our record. So hopefully we'll make that one come to fruition.'
Polyphia collaborated with Babymetal over the summer, joining the J-metal icons for a performance of their song Brand New Day at the Saitama Super Arena in Tokyo in June.
As for Tankian, he's a noted Polyphia fan. He told The Jesea Lee Show last summer that a friend introduced him to the quartet's music and that he found them 'really interesting'.
Polyphia are no strangers to star collaborations. Remember That You Will Die had songs featuring Deftones vocalist Chino Moreno and superstar guitarist Steve Vai, among others.

Judas Priest and Alice Cooper: A suitably wild ode to Ozzy – with help from Johnny Depp
Inevitably, and rightfully, at their more-or-less co-headline concert at a busy O2 Arena, both Judas Priest and Alice Cooper found ways to memorialise their late comrade in metal, the pioneer Ozzy Osbourne, who died earlier this week. As well as having Black Sabbath's War Pigs as their intro music, fellow sons-of-Birmingham Priest splayed Osbourne's likeness on a giant screen. Over an hour earlier, without ceremony, Cooper led his own capable group, along with members of his first band – and a surprise appearance from Johnny Depp on guitar – through a spirited version of Sabbath's Paranoid. The singer introduced Depp, with whom he plays in the side project Hollywood Vampires, as 'some guy we found in the alley'. With the actor bearing the look of a man who paints towns red for a living, this wasn't hard to believe. Despite becoming the eldest statesman of West Midlands metal singers just this week, 73-year-old Priest frontman Rob Halford wasn't the oldest person on the bill. Still singing songs about blowing up schools – the deathless School's Out, of course – at four years his senior, that honour goes to Alice Cooper. Like Ozzy, the pair have had their run-ins with excess. In London, the evident sprightliness of both Cooper and Halford was attributable either to several decades of abstinent living or else the restorative powers of walloping music. Returning with his trademark streaky black eye make-up and numerous costume changes, Alice Cooper looked much the same as he did in the 1980s. As one would expect from the godfather of shock rock, in an hour-long set that peaked quite brilliantly, the daft theatrics were present and correct. There was a guillotine, a straitjacket and a man dressed as Jason Voorhees from the Friday the 13th series. Despite never being much of a singer to begin with, Cooper's half-an-octave voice remains in good shape. Incredibly, the same can be said for Rob Halford. During a relentless Painkiller, on which he sounded exactly the same as he did in the 1990s, the frontman reached notes that were so high, and so clear, that I could only imagine every dog in Greenwich was losing its mind. Dressed in black and patrolling the stage like a headmaster at a school for Satanists, Halford was every inch the commanding frontman. Despite these days resembling Uncle Albert, from Only Fools & Horses, he even managed to ride a motorbike onstage during the irresistible Hell Bent For Leather. While Ozzy and Sabbath have harvested due credit for creating metal more or less single-handedly, the legacy of Priest remains, I think, somewhat underpriced. But as well as minting the 1980s aesthetic of leather and studs, musically, the quintet influenced both the poppier end of the market – particularly with Living After Midnight, the 75-minute set's closing song – while pointing the way forward for heavier and darker bands such as Megadeth and Slayer. Unlike Ozzy, Halford may not be on first name terms with the wider public; but it's not for nothing that he's called 'the Metal God'. At the top of the evening, opening act Phil Campbell & The Bastard Sons played Ace Of Spades, the evergreen classic from Campbell's old band Motörhead. Alice Cooper knocked out I'm Eighteen; Priest unveiled You've Got Another Thing Comin'. From first to last, at the O2 Arena, even the death of a rock deity couldn't smother the sound of giants walking among us still. As it always has, and as it always will, metal lives on. Iconic metal group celebrating 25th anniversary with special album release
Slipknot is celebrating the band's 25th anniversary by releasing a special edition of their debut album. The masked metal pioneers announced a deluxe reissue of their 1999 self-titled debut album on Thursday, July 24. 'Slipknot (25th Anniversary Edition)" will include all of the original album's songs in addition to new tracks. The special box set boasts 59 tracks — including 40 previously unreleased demos, alternate mixes and live recordings — spread across six LPs. The box set also includes nine new Slipknot collectors photo cards. 'Slipknot (25th Anniversary Edition)" will be released on Sept. 5. 'Slipknot' was released on Roadrunner Records in 1999. The project established Slipknot as one of the most popular bands in the nu-metal explosion of the late '90s and early 2000s. The project was certified platinum by early 2000, becoming the first such album in Roadrunner's history, according to AllMusic. The genre-blending album was voted the best debut album of the last 25 years by Metal Hammer readers in 2011. 'Slipknot' is also the band's only album to feature original guitarist Josh Brainard who left at the end of recording in late 1998 while the band was on a short hiatus. Slipknot have sold more than 30 million records, won a Grammy Award and headlined some of the world's biggest festivals over the past 25 years. The band's milestone anniversary also included the sold-out 'Here Comes The Pain' world tour that happened last year. 'Slipknot (25th Anniversary Edition)" is available for pre-save online.
