Hundreds of laptops, bank accounts linked to North Korean fake IT workers scheme seized in major crackdown

Politicoa day ago
The Justice Department on Monday announced the seizure of hundreds of financial accounts, fraudulent websites and laptops linked to a massive scheme by North Korean operatives posing as remote workers to infiltrate top tech companies and funnel money back to Pyongyang's weapons program.
The major government crackdown follows recent findings by cybersecurity experts revealing that several Fortune 500 firms were impacted by the intricate plot, which involves North Korean operatives using stolen identities and sophisticated AI tools to sail through the interview and hiring process. The cyber operation has grown more prolific as remote work in the U.S. has exploded, particularly in response to the Covid-19 pandemic.
According to the DOJ, around 100 U.S. companies have unknowingly hired workers tied to the North Korean regime, who have also used their access to company systems to steal U.S. intellectual property and virtual currency.
One company targeted was an unnamed California-based defense contractor that worked on artificial intelligence-powered equipment. Some of its technical data and files were compromised and sent abroad.
'Any government contracting company utilizing remote work could be a potential victim in the future,' said an FBI official, granted anonymity as a condition of speaking to reporters ahead of the announcement.
These North Korean agents are often aided by individuals running so-called laptop farms across the U.S. According to the DOJ, 29 known or suspected laptop farms across 16 states were searched. Around 200 laptops were seized by the FBI, along with dozens of financial accounts and fraudulent websites used to launder money.
Individuals from the U.S., China, United Arab Emirates and Taiwan, helped North Korean agents successfully embed themselves inside U.S. companies, the press release states.
U.S. national Zhenxing Wang was arrested and indicted for his involvement in a multiyear plot that allowed overseas operatives to obtain remote IT work with U.S. companies, generating more than $5 million in revenue. The scheme involved stealing the identities of around 80 U.S. citizens.
'North Korean IT workers defraud American companies and steal the identities of private citizens, all in support of the North Korean regime,' Assistant Director Brett Leatherman of the FBI's Cyber Division said in a statement. 'Let the actions announced today serve as a warning: if you host laptop farms for the benefit of North Korean actors, law enforcement will be waiting for you.'
In addition, four North Korean nationals were separately indicted for allegedly stealing $900,000 in virtual currencies from two unnamed companies based in Georgia.
The DOJ has previously taken action against these schemes, including arresting multiple U.S. nationals running the laptop farms over the past year. One American woman pleaded guilty in February to hosting a laptop farm from her home, which allowed overseas IT workers to receive more than $17.1 million for their work.
The State Department continues to offer a $5 million reward for information that could disrupt North Korean financial and other illicit activities.

As Diddy awaits verdict, here's where his business ventures stand

LOS ANGELES (AP) — While Sean 'Diddy' Combs awaits a jury's verdict in his federal sex trafficking trial, the once-celebrated music mogul has seen his business empire rapidly unravel. Combs, 55, who is one of the most influential figures in hip-hop history, now faces charges, including racketeering conspiracy, sex trafficking involving two former partners and transporting people across state lines for prostitution. Prosecutors have painted a dark portrait of the mogul, whose alleged pattern of violence included drug-fueled sex parties he reportedly called 'freak-offs' or 'hotel nights.' If convicted, the three-time Grammy winner could face life in prison. He has pleaded not guilty. Here's a closer look at how Combs' business portfolio and public image have crumbled under the weight of the allegations. What has happened to Combs' business empire? Before Combs was arrested and charged, his major business ventures had collapsed: He stepped down and later fully divested from Revolt TV, which was founded in 2013. The network offered a mix of programming focused on hip-hop culture, R&B music, social justice and documentaries. He also reportedly lost a Hulu reality series deal and saw his once-iconic fashion brand Sean John vanish from Macy's shelves. After surveillance footage surfaced last year showing Combs physically assaulting singer Cassie, his then-girlfriend, in 2016, consequences mounted: New York City revoked his ceremonial key, Peloton pulled his music, Howard University rescinded his honorary degree and his charter school in Harlem cut ties. Last year, Combs settled a legal dispute with Diageo, relinquishing control of his lucrative spirits brands, Ciroc and DeLeón. While many of his ventures have unraveled, his music catalog — for now — remains intact. Where does Combs' music stand? Bad Boy Records may be synonymous with 1990s icons like The Notorious B.I.G., Faith Evans, Ma$e, and 112, but Combs kept the label relevant before his arrest with high-profile releases. In 2023, Combs dropped ' The Love Album: Off the Grid,' which was his first solo studio album in nearly two decades, and Janelle Monáe released her critically acclaimed project ' The Age of Pleasure " through Bad Boy. Both albums earned Grammy nominations, with Monáe's effort recognized in the prestigious record of the year category. Ahead of the 'The Love Album' release, Combs made headlines by returning Bad Boy publishing rights to several former artists and songwriters, years after he was criticized for how he handled their contracts. Bad Boy Records remains operational, but the label has been significantly shaken by Combs' legal firestorm and it hasn't announced any major upcoming releases. Last week, a surprise EP called 'Never Stop' released by his son, King Combs, and Ye (formerly Kanye West), showed support for the embattled mogul. The project was released through Goodfellas Entertainment. Bad Boy Records remained active through 2022, backing Machine Gun Kelly's 'Mainstream Sellout' under the Bad Boy umbrella. He was a producer on MTV's reality television series 'Making the Band,' and 'Making His Band,' launching the careers of artists like the girl group Danity Kane and male R&B group Day 26. Could Diddy's fortune be at risk? Combs has been sued by multiple people who claim to have been victims of physical or sexual abuse. He has already paid $20 million to settle with one accuser, his former girlfriend Cassie. Most of those lawsuits, though, are still pending. It isn't clear how many, if any, will be successful, or how much it will cost Combs to defend himself in court. Combs and his lawyers have denied all the misconduct allegations and dismissed his accusers as out for a big payday. Federal prosecutors have also informed the court that if Combs is convicted, they would seek to have him forfeit any assets, including property, 'used to commit or facilitate' his crimes. They won't detail exactly what property that might involve until after the trial is over. How is Diddy's music faring on streaming? Despite the legal turmoil surrounding Combs, his music catalog remains widely available on major streaming platforms including Spotify, Apple Music and Amazon Music. None of the streamers have publicly addressed whether they plan to adjust how his music is featured if Combs is convicted. Interestingly, Combs' music saw a roughly 20% boost in U.S. streaming between April and May 2025, his biggest monthly spike this year, according to Luminate. The numbers jump coincided with key moments in the trial, including testimonies from Cassie and Kid Cudi. However, there was a slight drop-off with a 5 to 10% decrease in June compared to the previous month's streams. Streaming makes up a fraction of an artist's revenue and is calculated through a complicated process called 'streamshare.' Most artists see very little pay from digital services. What happened to other businesses like Sean John? Sean John, founded in 1998, has gone largely dormant, with its presence disappearing from major retailers like Macy's. There are no clear signs of a relaunch on the horizon. In 2023, Combs launched Empower Global, an online marketplace designed to uplift Black-owned businesses and strengthen the Black dollar. He positioned the platform as a modern-day 'Black Wall Street,' backing it with a reported $20 million of his own investment. The platform debuted with 70 brands and planned to expand by onboarding new Black-owned businesses each month, aiming to feature more than 200 by year's end. However, as 2023 came to a close, several brands cut ties with Empower Global. It was reported that some cited disappointing performance and growing concerns over the misconduct allegations surrounding Combs. ___ AP Music Writer Maria Sherman contributed to this report.

Former FBI agent pardoned by Trump for Jan. 6 charges now serving at DOJ: Sources

A former FBI agent accused of egging on rioters to attack police during the Jan. 6, 2021 riot at the U.S. Capitol is now serving in the Justice Department as part of the so-called "Weaponization Working Group," sources familiar with the appointment confirmed to ABC News. Jared Wise was on trial when he was pardoned as part of President Donald Trump's sweeping series of pardons and commutations for nearly all of the more than 1,500 individuals charged in connection with the Capitol attack. According to sources, Wise is now serving in the department as an investigator and counselor to Ed Martin, the former interim D.C. U.S. Attorney, whose permanent nomination to the post was rejected by Republican senators concerned over his past vocal advocacy for Jan. 6 rioters and other controversial actions he took in Trump's first four months in office. MORE: Trump admin live updates: House takes up Senate's version of Trump's megabill The New York Times first reported Wise's appointment at the DOJ. Wise was charged in May 2023 and later indicted, with prosecutors pointing to videos showing him yelling "Kill 'em!" repeatedly as rioters attacked police outside of the Capitol building. He also allegedly entered the building for roughly nine minutes and then continued shouting at police. 'You guys are disgusting," Wise allegedly said in body camera footage recorded by law enforcement. "I'm former law enforcement. You're disgusting. You are the Nazi. You are the Gestapo. You can't see it. . . . Shame on you! Shame on you! Shame on you!' A Justice Department spokesperson declined to comment when asked about Wise's appointment. Martin also did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

MCD vs. TXRH vs. CAVA: Which Restaurant Stock Has the Highest Upside Potential?

Macro uncertainties and tariff-led pressure on costs are expected to continue to weigh on the performance of restaurant chains. While ongoing headwinds could impact restaurant stocks over the near term, analysts remain optimistic about the long-term growth prospects of several restaurant stocks. Using TipRanks' Stock Comparison Tool, we placed McDonald's (MCD), Texas Roadhouse (TXRH), and CAVA Group (CAVA) against each other to find the restaurant stock that has the highest upside potential, according to Wall Street. McDonald's (NYSE:MCD) Stock McDonald's stock has risen about 15% over the past year, but is essentially flat on a year-to-date basis. The fast-food chain reported mixed results for the first quarter of 2025, largely due to a challenging macroeconomic backdrop. In fact, U.S. same-store sales fell for the second straight quarter, posting the largest decline (down 3.6% in Q1 2025) since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Unfavorable weather and cautious consumer spending impacted McDonald's sales in the first quarter. Nonetheless, McDonald's reaffirmed its full-year guidance, reflecting resilience in a tough backdrop. The company stated that it is working on improving its performance by focusing on value meals, menu innovation, and product launches such as McCrispy Chicken Strips and the reintroduction of snack wraps. Is McDonald's Stock a Buy, Sell, or Hold? Last week, UBS analyst Dennis Geiger reiterated a Buy rating on McDonald's stock with a price target of $350. The 4-star analyst believes that the pullback in the stock, combined with encouraging U.S. sales in the second half of 2025, makes MCD an attractive pick. The analyst sees a 'reasonably limited' downside in MCD stock, as he believes that it is a quality business positioned for multi-year market share gains. While Geiger agreed that consumer defensives are out of favor and quick service restaurant (QSR) sales trends and stocks continue to be under pressure, he expects to see share gains as U.S. and International trends improve. He added that McDonald's appears well-positioned to deliver strong same-store sales in the second half of 2025, driven by new products, value initiatives, and marketing plans, even as lower and middle-income spending pressure could persist. Currently, Wall Street has a Moderate Buy consensus rating on McDonald's stock based on 12 Buys, 13 Holds, and one Sell recommendation. The average MCD stock price target of $329.42 indicates about 13% upside potential. See more MCD analyst ratings Texas Roadhouse (NASDAQ:TXRH) Stock Texas Roadhouse is a casual dining steakhouse chain. The company missed analysts' earnings expectations for the first quarter of Fiscal 2025, as restaurant margins contracted due to commodity inflation and increased wages and other labor expenses. TXRH's comparable restaurant sales increased by 3.5% in Q1 2025. The company indicated that trends were improving, with comparable restaurant sales rising 5% in the first five weeks of Q2 FY25. Additionally, Texas Roadhouse increased its menu prices by about 1.4% in early April. Is TXRH a Good Stock to Buy? Recently, Texas Roadhouse announced the departure of CFO Chris Monroe from the company and the appointment of Vice President of Finance Keith Humpich as the interim CFO. Reacting to the news, Stephens analyst Jim Salera stated that the interim CFO appointment adds stability following Monroe's departure, given Humpich's long tenure and familiarity with the company's financial operations. Salera added that Texas Roadhouse continues to outperform casual dining rivals, with April traffic accelerating exiting Q1 2025. The analyst believes that the company's consistent execution, guest focus, and 'scratch-made' menu continue to be key differentiators in an uncertain consumer backdrop. However, Salera maintained a Hold rating on TXRH stock with a price target of $170, citing concerns related to macro uncertainty in the second half of 2025 and a premium valuation. Overall, Texas Roadhouse stock scores a Moderate Buy consensus rating based on seven Buys and nine Holds. The average TXRH stock price target of $190.87 indicates a modest upside potential of about 2% from current levels. TXRH stock has risen 9% over the past year. Cava Group (NYSE:CAVA) Stock Mediterranean fast casual restaurant chain Cava Group delivered better-than-expected earnings for the first quarter of 2025, with revenue growing 28% to $332 million. The company's same-store sales increased by 10.8%, outperforming several peers in the industry. Despite the strong results, CAVA stock has declined 25% year-to-date and 9% over the past year owing to concerns over valuation and macro uncertainties. Looking ahead, management aims to capitalize on ample opportunities to expand. The company expects to open 64 to 68 new restaurants this year, a slight increase from the previous forecast of 62 to 66 stores. Cava Group operated 382 restaurants as of the end of Q1 2025 and aims to increase its footprint to at least 1,000 restaurants by 2032. Is CAVA Stock a Buy? Recently, Stifel analyst Chris O'Cull reiterated a Buy rating on Cava Group stock but lowered the price target to $125 from $175. The 5-star analyst sees the pullback in the stock as a buying opportunity. Despite near-term challenges, the analyst believes that McDonald's long-term outlook is intact, supported by unit expansion, increasing brand awareness, and improving average unit volumes. He expects McDonald's long-term revenue growth in the 17% to 20% range, driven by a 15% unit growth and mid-single-digit same-restaurant sales (SRS) gains. O'Cull acknowledged near-term softness in CAVA's SRS growth, particularly in the second quarter, due to tough comparisons with the prior-year quarter, which included the launch of the popular Grilled Steak. The analyst now expects Q2 SRS of 5.5%, below the Street's estimate of 6.9%. That said, he noted the strength in CAVA's fundamentals, calling the dip in the stock 'a dish worth grabbing.' O'Cull expects Cava Group's average unit volumes (AUVs) to grow faster than previously expected, fueled by brand expansion and improved performance at new locations. He expects the company's EBIT margin to improve to the range of 9% to 10% by 2030 from an estimated 4.8% in Fiscal 2025, driven by scale efficiencies. CAVA stock price target of $112.92 indicates 34% upside potential. Conclusion Currently, Wall Street is cautiously optimistic about all three restaurant stocks discussed above. Currently, they see higher upside potential in CAVA stock than in MCD and TXRH stocks. Analysts view the pullback in CAVA stock as an attractive buying opportunity to build a position and gain from the company's long-term growth potential.
