'Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour' Packs 20 Mini Games And 14 Playable Tech Demos

Geek Culture04-06-2025
A new trailer has been released for the Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour , showing off the 20 mini-games and 14 tech demos players will be able to explore in the game when it releases as a paid digital download alongside Nintendo's upcoming console.
The game's overview trailer, which is currently only available to view on Nintendo's Japanese YouTube channel, spotlights a number of minigames that make use of the console's new features such its mouse mode, including one where players control a UFO and avoid mines, an endless runner style driving game featuring a car that can lean on two wheels, and a balloon popping game with aiming controls similar to that of traditional PC shooters.
On the tech demo front, the trailer showcased one that offered a real-time comparison between 720p and 2160p resolutions, alongside others letting players feel the Joy-Con's haptic feedback functionality like a Macarena shaker demo or one where players freely control a helicopter to feel the shifting vibrations as it flies across the screen.
Apart from its 20 mini games and 14 tech demos, the Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour will also feature a hub area designed after the console where players can freely explore and take part in in-game quizzes the learn about its new hardware and software features.
Despite offering a pretty substantial introductory game for the Nintendo Switch 2, the question remains if it can justify its US$10 asking price rather than being included alongside the console, especially considering Sony already did something similar (and arguably better) with Astro's Playroom , a fully-fledged three hour platforming game that also served as a tech demo for the PS5, which came free-of-charge for anyone who bought the console.
Nintendo had previously defended the decision to sell the game instead of bundling it with the console, citing that its price reflects the 'amount of care and work' put into it, and that it is 'not an exorbitant price' and 'feels like a good value for what you're getting out of the product', although one could argue that Astro's Playroom is graphically superior is every way despite being five years old now, and definitely of better value, considering it was free.
In any case, it's up to console users to decide with their wallets when the Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour launches on 5 June 2025 for US$9.99 alongside the console's release in the US, Europe, South Korea, Hong Kong and Japan.

EA's Failed Live-Service Shooter 'Anthem' To Shut Down Jan 2026

Electronic Arts (EA) has hammered in the final nail in Anthem's coffin, as BioWare's failed 2019 live-service looter shooter will officially shut down on 12 January 2026. Due to the title's online-only nature, this means that the game will be completely unplayable after its servers are taken offline, making it truly a dead game. Premium in-game currency has stopped being sold since 3 July, as though anyone is still buying those anyway, and the game will be removed from the EA Play library on 15 August this year, although it will still be available to download for those who already own the title, until its servers shut down next year. 'After careful consideration, we will be sunsetting Anthem on 12 January 2026,' wrote the BioWare team on a post announcing the game's shuttering. 'This means that the game will still be playable online for the next 180+ days. As of today, you can no longer purchase in-game premium currency, but you can still use your remaining balance until the servers go offline.' In a short Q&A accompanying the post, the team clarified that 'the sunsetting of Anthem has not led to any layoffs', which at least comes as a relief given that EA has gone through a series of massive layoffs over the past few years, including axing 50 jobs at BioWare in 2023, laying off around 670 staff and cancelling a Star Wars FPS title in 2024, and most recently, cutting around 400 positions an scrapping two more games in the works, including an extraction shooter set in the Titanfall universe. Anthem joins the long list of failed live-service titles over the past few years, such as Crystal Dynamics' 2020 action-adventure title Marvel's Avengers or PlatinumGames's 2022 RPG, Babylon's Fall , further cementing how blindly adopting the format, either due to greed or to chase industry trends, can and most likely will spell disaster for even the most respected game studios. Science Saru's 'Ghost in the Shell' Anime Series Boots Up New Logo & First Character Looks

The 1995 sci-fi classic Ghost in the Shell has enjoyed a storied legacy, which means the occasional long wait for new content. In 2026, Science Saru will revisit the familiar tale with a fresh anime project, described as 'the first instalment of a second generation' and the 10th adaptation overall of the original manga. Following an earlier reveal of the trailer and key visual, an updated teaser was unveiled at Anime Expo 2025, featuring the storyboard visuals and concept art of various characters, including protagonist Major Makoto Kusanagi. The previously revealed poster was also shown, this time with a new logo design: The series marks the first anime instalment for the franchise since 2020's Ghost in the Shell: SAC_204 , with a producer on the project stating during the panel that it will stay true to the original manga by Shirow Masamune (via Anime News Network). The creator has given his blessing to The Ghost in the Shell , announcing on social media, 'Considering the shift in production staff, one could even consider this the first instalment of a second generation. The original manga is quite old, so I ask for your understanding on that point (sorry!). That said, I sincerely hope this will once again be an enjoyable visual experience in some form.' Mokochan, assistant director of Dandadan , is making his directorial debut on the series, while acclaimed sci-fi novelist Toh EnJoe ( Space Dandy , Godzilla Singular Point ) serves as a scriptwriter and series composer. Science Saru is joined by Bandai Namco Filmworks, Kodansha, and Production I.G. on the production committee. The official synopsis for the anime reads: 'Deep into the twenty-first century, the line between man and machine has been inexorably blurred as humans rely on the enhancement of mechanical implants and robots are upgraded with human tissue. In this rapidly converging landscape, cyborg superagent Major Motoko Kusanagi is charged to track down the craftiest and most dangerous terrorists and cybercriminals, including 'ghost hackers' who are capable of exploiting the human/machine interface and reprogramming humans to become puppets to carry out the hackers' criminal ends.' Of the various adaptations over the years, Mamoru Oshii's original animated feature remains the most popular and acclaimed. The manga was published in 1989, introducing fans to Public Security Section 9, a counter-cyberterrorist organisation led by Major Mokoto Kusanagi. It spawned four more manga entries, five animated movies, a live-action film adaptation featuring Scarlett Johansson, and four anime series over the years. The World of Masamune Shirow -The Ghost in the Shell and the Path of Creation- exhibition opened in Tokyo on 12 April, and is set to end on 17 August. The Ghost in the Shell boots up in 2026.
