NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) — Women's professional tennis returns to the International Tennis Hall of Fame next week with the highest purse at the WTA 125 level.
Both the men's and women's tours will have tournaments at the Hall of Fame Open, with both the women's event and the ATP Challenger one featuring $200,000 purses.
While the ATP Tour had continued with the post-Wimbledon event on the Hall's grass courts, the women's tour hadn't played there since the 1990s.
In order to return with equal prize money, the tournament partnered with the MARGARET ('May All Resolve, Girls Achieve Real Equity Today') Fund, which supports programs that promote education about and compliance with Title IX. That allowed for a 60% increase in the women's tour purse to match the men's at the event.
The Hall of Fame Open begins with qualifying on Sunday and runs through July 13.

Trump wants to celebrate 250 years of independence with a UFC fight at the White House

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — President Donald Trump said Thursday that he's thinking of staging a UFC match on the White House grounds with upwards 20,000 spectators to celebrate 250 years of American independence. 'We have a lot of land there,' said Trump, a UFC enthusiast who has attended several of its mixed martial arts matches in recent months and is close friends with Dana White, the league's president. Trump announced his plan in Iowa during the kickoff for a year's worth of festivities to celebrate America's 250th birthday on July 4, 2026. The Republican president also announced a culminating festival on the National Mall in Washington, and a separate athletic competition featuring high school athletes from across the country. 'So every one of our national parks, battlefields and historic sites are going to have special events in honor of America 250. And I even think we're going to have a UFC fight," Trump said. ″Think of this on the grounds of the White House. We have a lot of land there," he said, adding that it would be a 'full fight' with 20,000 to 25,000 people. Trump has recently enjoyed standing ovations and cage-side seats for several UFC fights, including an appearance immediately after his 2024 reelection and another just last month alongside White for two championship fights.

Tomás Romero picks up second victory in three starts and New York City FC beats Toronto FC 3-1

NEW YORK (AP) — Hannes Wolf had a goal and an assist, Tomás Romero picked up his second victory in three starts and New York City FC beat Toronto FC 3-1 on Thursday night. New York City (9-7-4) moved into sixth place in the Eastern Conference with 31 points. Wolf opened the scoring in the 20th minute with his team-leading ninth goal of the season. His side-volley shot went off the far post and redirected off the other post into the net for a 1-0 lead. It was just the seventh first-half goal this season for NYCFC, which entered lowest in the league in that category. Mitja Ilenic made it 2-0 in the 49th with his second goal of the season. Agustín Ojeda dribbled into the area for a cross that deflected off Ilenic inside the far post. Toronto (4-11-5) cut its deficit to 2-1 in the 70th on an own goal. Theo Corbeanu got past his defender along the right sideline and got to the endline for a cross that went off defender Justin Haak and Romero's arm into the net. But four minutes later, Kevin O'Toole scored his first goal since March 9, 2024 off a great pass by Wolf. Toronto, which entered with just 25 goals allowed this season, was looking for its first road victory against New York City since September 2020. ___ AP soccer:
