Former Alberta UCP candidate found in contempt over election financing investigation
EDMONTON — An Alberta judge has found a former United Conservative candidate and five party donors to be in contempt for not attending interviews as part of an investigation into alleged irregular political donations made in 2023. A decision issued this week by Justice Peter Michalyshyn says for the past year the provincial elections commissioner has been investigating donations made to the party by people allegedly using money that wasn't their own leading up to the 2023 provincial election. The decision says the commissioner's investigation began in the spring of last year but it's not clear if the candidate, Ali Haymour, and the five party donors are the targets of the investigation. It says the commissioner sought to interview Haymour and the other donors as it was believed they hold relevant information and evidence. According to the decision Haymour and the other donors argued they didn't need to participate in the commissioner's investigation due to recent changes to provincial election financing rules the Alberta government made this past spring. Michalyshyn's decision says the changes might affect potential outcomes of the investigation, but it doesn't reduce the commissioner's power to compel people for interviews and the candidate and donors had no legal reason not to participate. Among other things, the legislated changes prevent the elections commissioner from imposing penalties and sanctions on those who break election financing rules if one year has passed since the commissioner received the complaint. Pennsylvania Skill, powered by Pace-O-Matic, applauds PA Gaming Control Board and casinos on record-breaking $6.4 billion revenue in 2024/2025 fiscal year
Even with their financial gains, casinos continue their unjustified attack on skill games HARRISBURG, PA, July 24, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Pace-O-Matic, the developer of legal Pennsylvania Skill games, congratulated the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board (PGCB) and state casinos on breaking all records with $6.4 billion in revenue during the 2024/2025 fiscal year that ended on June 30, 2025. The revenue comes from slot machines, table games, internet gaming, sports wagering, fantasy contests, and video gaming terminals (VGTs). As the PGCB and casinos celebrate an unprecedented 12-month financial win, small businesses, veteran groups, volunteer fire companies, and other fraternal clubs in Pennsylvania are also praising the supplemental income they receive from operating legal skill games. Many would need to make difficult economic decisions without the revenue. 'Pennsylvania casinos continue to break revenue records, which is great news for the commonwealth,' said Mike Barley, chief public affairs officer for Pace-O-Matic (POM). 'It is also more than proof that no competition exists between casinos and the small businesses and fraternal organizations that provide skill games to their customers." The state numbers show incredible growth in internet gambling in the state. While some casinos saw their brick-and-mortar revenue decline, it has clearly shifted to online gambling. The 2024/2025 internet gaming revenue totaled $2.47 billion, a 27% increase from the revenue during the 2023/2024 fiscal year. POM supports fair regulation and taxation of skill games, specifically through the passage of legislation sponsored by Sen. Gene Yaw. His Senate Bill 626 would generate $300 million in annual tax revenue. However, a competing proposal, Senate Bill 756 - supported by casinos - poses a real threat to small businesses and other groups that rely on skill game revenue. This bill imposes a crushing 40% effective tax, when including all fees, and introduces operational restrictions that could prevent many establishments from offering skill games. This would harm many businesses and nonprofit organizations and would mean a drop in the expected state tax revenue. 'Instead of trying to work with us, casinos have focused for years on unsuccessful legislation and legal challenges seeking an outright ban on skill games,' said Barley. 'The worst part is that their efforts, if successful, will kill small businesses, American Legions, VFWs, Moose Lodges, and many other places that count on skill games.' There is no question about the legality of the games. Several courts have ruled that Pennsylvania Skill games are legal, including a unanimous Commonwealth Court. The games also provide jobs in the state, in part because they are manufactured in Williamsport. In addition, over 90% of the income they generate stays within the local economy or the state. GOP senators demand special counsel probe Obama Russiagate intrigue
Two senior Republican senators implored the Justice Department Thursday to name a special counsel to probe fresh revelations about the Obama administration's role in the Russiagate investigation that dogged President Trump's first term. Sens. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) and John Cornyn (R-Texas) called for an independent investigation into whether the 44th president or his top officials 'manipulated the US national security apparatus for a political outcome.' Their public call comes one day after the DOJ formed a 'strike force' to comb through recently declassified intelligence material made public by Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard. 'Appointing an independent special counsel would do the country a tremendous service in this case,' Graham and Cornyn said in a joint statement, first reported by Fox News. 'With every piece of information that gets released, it becomes more evident that the entire Russia collusion hoax was created by the Obama administration to subvert the will of the American people.' 4 Sen. John Cornyn is facing a bruising primary contest from Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton. REUTERS Currently, the DOJ 'strike force' is evaluating next steps following Gabbard's public accusations that the Obama administration whipped up and amplified the 'Russia collusion' narrative about Trump's successful 2016 campaign. The first Trump administration appointed then-Connecticut US Attorney John Durham in October 2020 to investigate the origins of the FBI's counterintelligence investigation of mooted links between the Republican candidate and Moscow. Durham wrapped up his probe in 2023, issuing a report that concluded the FBI probe was 'seriously flawed' and had no basis in evidence. 'The FBI discounted or willfully ignored material information that did not support the narrative of a collusive relationship between Trump and Russia,' Durham wrote, later adding: 'An objective and honest assessment of these strands of information should have caused the FBI to question not only the predication for [the investigation], but also to reflect on whether the FBI was being manipulated for political or other purposes. Unfortunately, it did not.' 4 The Justice Department has formed a 'strike force' to look through revelations from DNI Tulsi Gabbard. AFP via Getty Images But Graham and Cornyn want a new special counsel to conduct an even deeper and broader dive into the Obama intelligence community's activities revolving around Russian interference in the 2016 election. 'I urge Attorney General Bondi to appoint a special counsel to investigate the extent to which former President Obama, his staff and administration officials manipulated the U.S. national security apparatus for a political outcome,' Graham declared on X Thursday. Last week, Gabbard began publicly divulging previously classified material, providing evidence that the Obama administration previously did not believe Russia hacked US voting systems before backtracking after Trump defeated Hillary Clinton. Gabbard also released a 2020 House Intelligence Committee report that found Russian tyrant Vladimir Putin's 'principal motivations in these operations were to undermine faith in the US democratic process' and that he 'held back leaking some compromising material for post-election use against the expected Clinton administration.' That finding sharply contradicts the prevailing narrative that Putin had a vested interest in a Trump victory, with some prominent figures suggesting the Russian president possessed leverage over the Republican candidate. 4 DNI Tulsi Gabbard accused the Obama administration of pushing the Russia collusion narrative. Getty Images Gabbard has used the declassified information to accuse the Obama administration of mounting a 'treasonous conspiracy' to undermine Trump's presidency. Critics of Gabbard have noted that a 2020 Senate Intelligence Committee report backed the theory that 'Putin and the Russian Government demonstrated a preference for candidate Trump.' An Obama spokesman said earlier this week that 'nothing' in the information released by Gabbard ' undercuts the widely accepted conclusion that Russia worked to influence the 2016 presidential election but did not successfully manipulate any votes.' 'These findings were affirmed in a 2020 report by the bipartisan Senate Intelligence Committee, led by then-Chairman Marco Rubio,' now secretary of state.
