26 June, 3 July paid holidays in Egypt for Hijri New Year, 30 June Revolution anniversary - Society

Al-Ahram Weekly19-06-2025
Egypt has announced that Thursday, 26 June, and Thursday, 3 July, will be paid holidays, marking the Hijri New Year and the anniversary of the 30 June Revolution, respectively.
These dates were announced in two cabinet decrees.
Although the 30 June Revolution anniversary officially falls on a Monday this year, the government has moved most weekday public holidays to Thursdays since 2020 to allow for longer weekends.
According to a cabinet statement on Thursday, the holidays will apply to employees in ministries, government agencies, public authorities, local administration units, public sector companies, and public business sector companies.
The statement affirmed that school and university exams will proceed as scheduled on their original dates, unaffected by these newly declared holidays.
The Islamic New Year (1 Muharram 1447 AH) is astronomically predicted to begin on Thursday, 26 June.
However, a crucial sighting of the crescent moon will occur on Wednesday night.
The 30 June holiday commemorates the day millions of Egyptians demonstrated in 2013 to demand the resignation of then-President Mohamed Morsi.

Israel says intercepted missile fired from Yemen - Region

Yemen's Huthi rebels launched two attacks targeting Israel's main airport, the latest on Tuesday, with the Israeli army intercepting both, a day after striking the rebel-held Yemeni port of Hodeida. Israel has repeatedly struck Huthi-held parts of Yemen after the Iran-backed rebels began targeting the country with missile and drone attacks, claiming solidarity with Palestinians over the Gaza war. The Huthis targeted Ben Gurion International Airport "using a 'Palestine 2' hypersonic ballistic missile", according to military spokesman Yarya Saree, who had hours earlier claimed a similar attack on the airport. On Monday, Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz said "Yemen's fate will be the same as Tehran's" after hitting Huthi targets in Hodeida port in an attack aimed to prevent any attempt to restore infrastructure previously hit. A Huthi security official, requesting anonymity to discuss sensitive matters, told AFP that "the bombing destroyed the port's dock, which had been rebuilt following previous strikes." The Huthis recently resumed deadly attacks in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, targeting ships they accuse of having links to Israel, to put pressure on Israel to end the Gaza war. Nigeria officially backs Egypt's Khaled El-Anany for UNESCO Chief at Abuja Business Forum - Foreign Affairs

Nigeria has officially endorsed Egypt's candidate, Dr Khaled El-Anany, for the post of Director-General of UNESCO ahead of the election scheduled for October 2025. Nigerian Foreign Minister Yusuf Tuggar made the announcement during the opening session of the Egypt-Nigeria Business Forum in Abuja on Monday. The forum was attended by Egypt's Foreign Minister, Badr Abdelatty—currently on a West Africa tour—Dr El-Anany, and a high-level delegation of representatives from major Egyptian and Nigerian companies, business chambers, and economic organizations. In his keynote address, Tuggar expressed Nigeria's full support for El-Anany's candidacy and extended his best wishes for a successful election. He also reaffirmed Nigeria's commitment to strengthening bilateral ties with Egypt, highlighting major opportunities for enhanced trade, investment, and economic cooperation. For his part, Abdelatty underscored the strategic importance Egypt places on its relationship with Nigeria, calling it one of the country's most vital partners on the continent. He noted that the forum provides a key platform for fostering private-sector partnerships and exploring joint investment opportunities across various sectors. Abdelatty emphasized the need to fully utilize the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) to expand cooperation, particularly in agriculture, pharmaceuticals, mining, and manufacturing. He also highlighted Egypt's efforts to develop its investment environment and infrastructure, and expand its industrial base into sectors such as electronics, construction materials, food processing, and pharmaceuticals—citing their high quality and competitive pricing. The minister pointed to Egypt's ongoing national mega-projects and the country's vast market potential, affirming the government's readiness to support deeper economic cooperation with Nigeria. He also referenced the longstanding political and historical ties between the two nations. Abdelatty concluded by urging joint action to eliminate barriers to economic collaboration and reiterated Egypt's full commitment to supporting investors and businesses from both sides. He expressed confidence that Nigeria would provide the necessary facilitation to maximize mutual benefits. Follow us on: Facebook Instagram Whatsapp Short link:

Pope has first call with Palestinian President Mahmud Abbas - Region

Pope Leo spoke by phone on Monday to the president of the Palestinian Authority, Mahmud Abbas, about the conflict in Gaza and violence in the West Bank, the Vatican said. It was the first official conversation between the two men since Leo's papacy began. "The Holy Father repeated his appeal for international humanitarian law to be fully respected, emphasising in particular the obligation to protect civilians and sacred places, the prohibition of the indiscriminate use of force and of the forced transfer of the population," the Vatican wrote. The pope emphasised "the urgent need to provide assistance to those most vulnerable to the consequences of the conflict and to allow the adequate entry of humanitarian aid", it said. It followed a call on Friday between the pope and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, a day after a strike by Israel on Gaza's only Catholic Church that killed three people. On Sunday, Leo condemned the "barbarity" of the war in Gaza and again called for a peaceful resolution. The Holy See, which supports a two-state solution, formally recognised the state of Palestine through an agreement signed in 2015, one of the first states in Europe to do so. In 2014, Israeli and Palestinian presidents Shimon Peres and Abbas planted an olive tree alongside Pope Francis in the Vatican gardens. Follow us on: Facebook Instagram Whatsapp Short link:
