A US-based startup co-founder is being criticised on LinkedIn for promoting a culture of overwork, disguised as ambition. Emilio Van Cotthem, co-founder of the internship platform Subscription Intern, shared a screenshot of his tightly packed weekend calendar, claiming he "collapsed" from exhaustion. However, he quickly backtracked, presenting his gruelling 31-meeting weekend as a point of pride. "I had 31 meetings this weekend. I collapsed," the entrepreneur wrote, before adding, "Psych - mother didn't raise no quitter." In the following lines, he continued: "You want to stay ahead? You have to work when your competition is 'unplugging.' Steve Jobs didn't take weekends off - neither do I. Work-life balance? Cool. I'll balance later - after I win." The post quickly gained traction online, with many criticising Mr Cotthem not only for the tone of his post, but also for promoting a culture of overwork. "Bro this ain't nothing to celebrate. We have one life to live, and your company and clients aren't coming to your funeral," wrote one user. "Good for you if that is what drives you. If you collapse from a stroke or heart attack today, was it worth it?" commented another. "This is not the flex you think it is," remarked a third user. "I thought this was satire," wrote one user. However, despite the criticism, Mr Cotthem chose not to retreat. Instead, he returned with a follow-up post - this time sharing another screenshot of an even fuller calendar and defending what he called the "madness". "People said I 'had no life.' They used my 70+ meeting Google Calendar as proof... But while they were criticising me from the sidelines, I was in the arena, getting my reps in," he wrote. The entrepreneur further listed outcomes from his relentless work pace. "25% conversion rate on sales calls - from hundreds of failed iterations, Doubled our sales cycle speed - we just hit our weekly quota on Wednesday, Record-breaking customer satisfaction - referrals are flowing, And I've never been more locked in, fulfilled, or obsessed with the mission," he wrote. "I'm not saying hustle porn is the answer. But I am saying mastery takes volume. Most people want results. Very few want the repetition required to earn them. So no, I don't regret it. Because these reps built the foundation for everything that's working now," he concluded. However, social media users continued to criticise him. "Wasting a weekend on pointless meetings which gets no one ahead. The only thing you are winning at is being the biggest pain in the a** in those people's lives," one user wrote.

Partho Banerjee, senior executive officer (marketing and sales) said while Maruti has seen an uptick in bookings ahead of the festive season, starting with Onam in Kerala, conversions are slow. 'Growth in rural markets which stood at about 10% last year, has now come down to 2-3%. In urban areas, with layoffs in the IT sector, buyers are cautious,' Banerjee said, adding, 'We have, however, seen an increase in bookings which is a positive sign.' 'With the advent of the festive season, as things stabilise, we expect the demand momentum to pick up,' said Banerjee. Maruti Suzuki has so far recorded a 10% increase in bookings in Kerala. Korean rival Hyundai Motor India too saw sales dip by 10% to 43,973 vehicles in July. Tarun Garg, chief operating officer, said, 'While the overall auto industry has seen some softness in recent months, we remain optimistic with the onset of the festive season and are fully geared up with robust supply and product offerings.'Meanwhile, Tata Motors saw passenger vehicle sales decline by 12% to 39,521 units last month. At Toyota Kirloskar Motor too, sales fell by 1.2% to 29,159 vehicles in July. Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) and JSW MG Motor India were among the few to buck the sluggish industry trend, recording an increase in wholesale volumes in July. While sales at Mahindra climbed 20% to 49,871 vehicles, JSW MG posted a 46% surge to 6,678 vehicles. Nalinikanth Gollagunta, CEO (automotive division) at M&M said, 'Our SUV growth has been supported by the recent launch of XUV 3XO 'REVX' Series & the commencement of deliveries for Pack two variants of the BE 6 and XUV 9E models.' In the commercial vehicle segment, market leader Tata Motors posted a 4% sales growth at 26,432 units in July. Chennai-based Ashok Leyland recorded a similar 4% rise to 13,501 units while VE Commercial Vehicles' sales of Eicher branded trucks and buses grew 6% to 6,410 units. Two-wheeler sales remained healthy in the month under review. At TVS Motor Company, domestic two-wheeler sales increased 21% to 308,720 units in July. Royal Enfield reported a 25% growth at 76,254 units. In the farm equipment segment, market leader M&M sold 26,990 tractors last month, a 5% increase from a year earlier.'This performance was driven by sustained land preparation activities, supported by robust cash flows in rural markets following the conclusion of Rabi crop harvesting," said Veejay Nakra, president (farm equipment business) at M&M. 'Additionally, the normal progression of monsoon across most regions further contributed to good demand during the onset of sowing for the Kharif season."

Food enthusiasts are turning their homes into pop-up dining spaces, inviting guests in for a unique and close-knit culinary Sethi, who hosts supper clubs in Jaipur, tells India Today, "Supper clubs are intimate dining experiences often hosted in homes, where food and conversations take centre stage. Unlike restaurants, there is no rush or fixed menu. The focus is on storytelling, seasonal flavours, and meeting new people. They revive the joy of eating together and connecting over shared tables."Further, Prachi Gupta, co-founder, House of Mala, a supper club in Mumbai, adds, "Imagine being at a dinner party but with people you've never met, in a cosy home, and food that makes you pause and go 'wait, what is this?!' That's a supper club. It's not just dinner, it's a vibe. The charm lies in how personal and immersive it feels, very different from your usual dinner outing."The rise of supper clubs Let's be honest, plain old restaurant menus just don't cut it any more. People want food with a backstory, a twist, maybe even a secret recipe. And yes, social media has a lot to do with it. Everyone's chasing that one-of-a-kind experience they can post about. Plus, in a world full of dating apps and solo lunches, we're all secretly craving a real connection, and what brings people together better than food?Kaushalya Patil, chef and founder of AMPLE, a Pune-based supper club, shares, "This culinary format is definitely gaining popularity amongst diners who want to eat food that is chef-driven and freshly curated. A family-style communal table where diners are seated at the same table also adds to the charm, because everyone meets strangers but eventually ends up talking about food — and who has ever complained about that?" "It's crafted for that particular evening only. The experience is personal, seasonal, and unique," she Toonika Guha, founder of Toontooni's Table, a modern Bengali supper club in Gurugram, it's the in-person connection that's driving this craze. She shares, "I think the covid-19 era has something to do with it since we spent a couple of years isolated and cooped up at home. Now that the world is back to normal, people want to make the most of human connections."She adds that in India, most supper clubs are in cities like Delhi-NCR, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Pune, places that have a high number of young people who have migrated to study or to work. These people have left behind their homes and families for better prospects in these big cities. But since she has hosted very small groups at home, so far she has had good for Kaushalya Patil, safety is not a concern. "We always try to get in touch with the diners before the dinner on a call to understand what kind of food they like and why they chose to book a seat at our supper club dinner table.
