Ryan Gerard continues first-time winners trend with victory at Barracuda Championship

USA Today2 days ago
While most of the golf world's attention was on the British Open, there was an opposite-field event on the PGA Tour taking place.
The 2025 Barracuda Championship, the final opposite-field tournament in 2025, offered a $4 million purse, a $720,000 first-place prize and 300 FedEx Cup Points, critical for those vying for a top 70 spot in the upcoming FedEx Cup Playoffs.
Who won the 2025 Barracuda Championship?
Former North Carolina Tar Heel Ryan Gerard, 25, tallied 47 points in the lone tournament on the PGA Tour to utilize the Modified Stableford scoring system to win by three points over past champion Erik van Rooyen at the Old Greenwood course at Tahoe Mountain Club in Truckee, California.
In the Barracuda, positive numbers are a good thing, as golfers earn 8 points for an albatross, 5 points for an eagle, 2 points for birdie, 0 for par, minus-1 for bogeys and minus-3 for double bogey or worse.
After 54 holes, Gerard was tied with Rico Hoey at 34 points but Gerard's 13-point Sunday was enough to hold off the field. Todd Clements put together a 16-point final round to finish solo third. Beau Hossler had the most points (17) in the final round and tied Max McGreevy for fourth, 10 points back.
Gerard is the 11th first-time winner on the PGA Tour in 2025. But did he see this win coming?
"I want to say yes, but you never really know in this game. Been playing a lot of really good golf. Felt like I haven't been quite getting the scores out of the shots that I've hit," he said. "It's been a long time being a long grind, and, yeah, it's pretty cool to end up on top."
While he had five bogeys on his Sunday scorecard, he offset them with two eagles and four birdies. Those two final-round eagles were his only two of the week.
"It's just like a culmination of like a lifetime of work. I can't tell you like how many hours I've spent hitting golf balls dreaming of winning on the PGA Tour," he said. "Yeah, it's really special."

Golf odds for 2026 majors: Scottie Scheffler early favorite after Open Championship win

The world's No. 1 golfer just won the final major on the golf calendar this year, and betting experts anticipate plenty more big wins on the horizon. Updated odds for the 2026 golf majors are out, and Scottie Scheffler is the familiar name at the top of every list. He is considered the favorite to win every major in 2026 coming off his 2025 Open Championship victory at Royal Portrush, according to BetMGM. It shouldn't be a surprise at this point. Scheffler was also the betting favorite entering all four majors this season. He also won his first PGA Championship in May. Scheffler only needs to win the U.S. Open to join Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy as the only golfers in the modern era to win the sport's grand slam. 'Any doubts about Scottie Scheffler's British Open pedigree were emphatically squashed by the American at Royal Portrush with an effortless four-shot victory," BetMGM senior trader Matt Wall said. "BetMGM immediately shortened his 2026 Masters price to +400 from +500 and that could still shorten further should he continue to dominate on the PGA Tour. The comparisons with Tiger Woods certainly don't look out of place right now. All the early action is on Scottie to win all four majors at +25000, and he is the favorite in each one right now.' Here's a breakdown of the early odds to win golf's majors in 2026: What are the early odds for golf's 2026 major championships? British Open winner Scottie Scheffler takes Claret Jug on Tonight Show, to Happy Gilmore 2

After an epic week in Great Britain, former Texas Longhorn Scottie Scheffler is back in the United States and enjoying the spoils of his British Open win with his family. The four-time major champion stopped by the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon and went to the premier of Happy Gilmore 2 with Adam Sandler and the cast. Scheffler dominated the media and the golf course in Northern Ireland. His monologue about professional satisfaction, or lack thereof, and the importance of family was the big story at the British Open last week until he blew away the field for his second major of the year. His reaction to winning the Claret Jug and sharing it with his 15-month-old son Bennett will live in his fan's memories for years to come. Scheffler said after winning at Royal Portrush he couldn't wait to get home to celebrate. But the Texas Ex stopped off in New York City for some fun before heading back to Dallas. First, Scheffler did a quick visit on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. Scheffler got a standing ovation from the crowd as soon as the curtain opened to reveal him holding the trophy. Then Fallon and Scheffler took a selfie with the Claret Jug and the audience in the background. Then it was off to world premier of Happy Gilmore 2 with Adam Sandler and the rest of the cast. Again, the Claret Jug joined Scheffler and his wife Meredith. Scheffler reportedly has a cameo in the sequel to the 1996 classic. Not every entertainment reporter even know who the world's No. 1 golfer was. In the original, Happy Gilmore famously won the Tour Championship. That is a tournament Scheffler has now won twice in real life. On Monday, it was announced Scheffler would fun the renovation of the Texas Longhorns Men's Golf Team practice facility, which will be renamed "Scheff's Kitchen." Happy Gilmore 2 premieres on Netflix Friday, July 25. Follow us on X, formerly Twitter, at @LonghornsWire
