RIP VS Achuthanandan: Everyone's favourite Comrade

Iconic Communist and former Chief Minister of Kerala VS Achuthanandan has passed away. He was undergoing treatment at a private hospital in the capital, following a cardiac attack on June 23rd morning. He was earlier incapacitated following a stroke in 2019. A founding leader of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), VS Achuthanandan had turned 101 last October. VS was the last of the 32 leaders who walked out of the historical CPI national council meet in 1964 to form the Communist Party of India (Marxist). VS began his political career as a trade unionist at the forefront of land struggles. He was also part of the now iconic Punnapra-Wayalar struggle. A former Chief Minister, VS was undoubtedly the CPM's most popular leader in the state, evoking genuine affection among the masses right down to the grassroot levels. Began by assisting brother at tailoring shop Born on October 20, 1923 as the son of Sankaran and Akkamma, VS had a difficult childhood after losing his mother at the age of four. Initially, he assisted his brother at a tailoring shop, and subsequently a coir factory worker. Initiated into the state's political movement by P Krishna Pillai, he started his early political life as a trade union activist in 1938, by organising agricultural workers at Kuttanadu. He went on to become a member of the Travancore State Congress. He became a member of the Communist Party in 1940 and was later part of the undivided CPI state Secretariat in 1957. VS was also part of the country's freedom struggle and underwent imprisonment many a time. During one such incarceration, the police had brutally pierced his soles with a bayonet at the Poonjar station lock-up. He spent around five-and-a-half years in prison and four years underground. Legendary for his firm stance VS was at the forefront of 'land' struggles, starting with the Alappuzha declaration in 1970 demanding implementation of the Land Reforms Act passed by the EMS Government in 1967. In 1957, he became the CPI state secretariat member. On numerous occasions, he faced opposition and criticism from various corners for raising his voice against corrupt practices indulged in by fellow leaders. In 1962, during the Sino-Indian war, he was demoted within the party for supporting blood donation camps for Indian soldiers. A long-term CPM state secretary (from 1980 to 1992), VS was legendary for his firm stance in dealing with issues — both inner-party and socio-political.

SC issues notice on PIL seeking display of seller details on consumer goods

New Delhi, Jul 21 (UNI) The Supreme Court today issued notice on a public interest litigation (PIL) seeking enforcement of consumers' 'Right to Know' the identity and details of sellers and intermediaries involved in goods and services. A bench comprising Justice Vikram Nath and Justice Sandeep Mehta sought responses from the Centre and all States within four weeks. The petition highlights that consumers must be informed not only about the quality, quantity, potency, purity, standards, and certification of products, but also the full details of the distributor, dealer, trader, seller, and shop owner to enable effective redressal against unfair trade practices. It invokes Sections 2(6) and 2(9) of the Consumer Protection Act, 2019, read with Article 19 of the Constitution. It seeks directions to the Centre and States to ensure that all sellers display their registration or license details, including name, address, contact number, and employee strength, prominently at the entry gate on a board visible to any ordinary consumer. The petition emphasises that transparency about sellers' identities will deter fraud and misrepresentation, empower consumers to make informed decisions, and ensure accountability. It states, 'Right to Know helps consumers avoid falling prey to fraudulent or deceptive sellers who might misrepresent products or disappear after transactions.' Highlighting the importance of operationalising this right in both offline and online retail environments, the petitioner contends that lack of such information hampers consumers from filing complaints or seeking redressal for poor quality, adulteration, overpricing, or other exploitative practices. The PIL also refers to online marketplace rules mandating disclosure of details of high-volume sellers to ensure consumer safety and market transparency. It submits that consumer rights under Articles 19 and 21 include the right to be informed about the authenticity of sellers and the safety standards of products to protect health, safety, and fair market practices. The matter will now be heard after the Centre and States file their replies. UNI SNG SSP

Rebel leader: V S Achuthanandan's impact on CPI(M)

Thiruvananthapuram, Marxist veteran V S Achuthanandan, who died at a hospital here on Monday, was a rebel and corrective force within his own party and never bothered about disciplinary actions. Rebel leader: V S Achuthanandan's impact on CPI(M) The contradictory stand that he adopted put the party in a tough position many times, and the murder of Revolutionary Marxist Party leader T P Chandrasekharan was one of such incidents. Chandrasekharan, a former CPI leader who had quit the party following differences with the leadership, was hacked to death by a gang while he was returning home on his bike at Onchiyam in Kozhikode on May 4, 2012. The murder was allegedly masterminded by the local leaders of the CPI. Though the party leadership adopted a stand that Chandrasekharan was a "traitor," Achuthanandan never denounced his former party colleague. When the party argued that the then UDF government's move to order a CBI probe into the gruesome murder was a politically motivated one, VS supported the central agency probe and even wrote to the authorities demanding the same. He even defied the party's directive not to visit Chandrasekhar's house and called on his widow K K Rema on the politically significant day of Neyyattinkara bypoll in the same year. The slain leader's house had witnessed highly emotional scenes on the day when VS came there. Overcome with emotion, Rema wept bitterly, clutching Achuthanandan's folded hands for several seconds. The poignant moment was captured in a photograph that graced the front pages of all major newspapers the following day. Though Achuthanandan refused to speak to the media at the time, his surprise visit and the subsequent publication of the photo served as a political statement and a clear response to his party on the matter. An emotional Rema, now the UDF-backed Vadakara MLA, shared the same photo on her Facebook page on Monday as a tribute to the leader, accompanied by a heartfelt note.
