Max Verstappen SPINS OUT and loses nine places in bizarre safety car incident as Oscar Piastri is given penalty

THERE was a bonkers restart after a safety car at Silverstone as Max Verstappen dramatically SPUN OFF track.
The Dutchman, who was in second place, had momentarily pulled in front of Oscar Piastri who slowed right down as the safety car was ending.

Max Verstappen dramatically spun off the track
Amid all the confusion Verstappen spun wildly before recovering and dropping all the way back into 11th.
The Dutchman was left fuming, and said on his team radio: "Whoa, Mate! Jesus, just suddenly again slows down!"
The stewards were then forced to investigate Piastri for a Safety Car infringement and he was later slapped with a whopping ten-second time penalty.
Lando Norris just needed to stay within touching distance from his teammate and the Silverstone crown would be his.
The safety car had been called into action as Isack Hadjar slammed into the wall and was luckily left unhurt.
The Racing Bulls youngster had crashed into the back of Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli.
McLaren chief executive Zak Brown on Sky Sports F1: "We're debating that here on the pit wall. That was a bit of a late Safety Car call in.
"The leader controls the race. I think it looked a little bit more dramatic on tv than we saw on telemetry."

He also admitted McLaren are considering appealing, saying: "Yeah. That's exactly the conversation that we're having.
"I think you also had Max accelerating because he thought Oscar was about ready to go. A combination of both."

Piastri dropped behind eventual winner Lando Norris after he was forced to serve a 10-second penalty when he decelerated from 135mph to just 32mph on the Hangar Straight ahead of a safety car restart. The stewards accused Piastri of 'erratic driving' and said Max Verstappen, who was running second at the time, had to take 'evasive action to avoid a collision'. But Piastri said: 'I felt it was well within the rules, and I did it once already in that race. I don't really get it. 'I hit the brakes, and at the same time as I did, the lights went out on the safety car. I didn't accelerate because I can control the pace from there. 'I didn't do anything differently to my first restart. I didn't go slower. I don't think Max had to evade me. So I am a bit confused to say the least. I know I deserved a lot more than I did today and when you don't get the result you deserve, it hurts.' However, McLaren rebuffed his approach and Piastri continued: 'I knew what the answer was going to before I asked. But I just wanted a small glimour of hope that I could get it back but I knew it wasn't going to happen. 'Lando didn't do anything wrong so I don't think it would have been fair to swap, but I thought I should ask. It doesn't change much for the championship. I felt I did a good job and I will use the frustration to make sure I win some more races.'
