Shropshire's Alex Harris leaves roadie life to open music shop

BBC News8 hours ago
Alex Harris could never have imagined a chance encounter with Slade guitarist Dave Hill would lead to 20 years as a roadie for some of rock's biggest names. But, despite working for the likes of Slade, The Waterboys and The Futureheads, he still had a dream to fulfil - to open a music shop. And now, back home in Shropshire, he has taken the step to unveil Big Al's Music Emporium, in Wem, stocking everything from Fender Stratocaster guitars to clarinet reeds and violin bows. "I've always had a dream of opening a shop," the 50-year-old said.
Music has always been part of Mr Harris's life - his parents were semi-professional musicians who met in a Birmingham youth orchestra."My dad played trumpet, my mum played violin, so as a child I was always around music," he said."But I went down the rock and roll route."
'Roadie was unwell'
After a stint in the Army playing the trumpet, Mr Harris returned home to Shropshire. And it was while working in a Shifnal music shop for acclaimed guitar designer Jamie Davey, Mr Harris got the opportunity of a lifetime."Dave Hill, from Slade, was in the shop one day looking at guitars," he said. One of the band's roadies was unwell, and, needing someone to cover, Slade's lead guitarist asked whether he wanted to step in for him."I was like, 'Uh, yeah!'."
After that first tour with Slade in December 1999, Mr Harris' career took off as a roadie and guitar technician. "From making contacts on the road, I ended up touring with [...] people like Midge Ure, The Waterboys, Howard Jones, The Futureheads," he recalled. But eventually life on the road started to become too much, especially after getting married and becoming a father."I know too many guys who don't see their kids because they're always on tour around the world, and I didn't want that, I wanted to be a proper dad," he said. But, coming off the road having worked in the "high-pressure" events industry, the 50-year-old said that initially he was "feeling lost."
'Wide range of budgets'
Opening his own shop was "always a dream" and his new venture seems to be serving the need he was left with having come off the road.Mr Harris is keen to appeal to a wide range of budgets - not just top-drawer, pricey instruments, but pre-loved ones too. "I know that my local community in Shropshire can't necessarily afford thousands of pounds to spend on a guitar," he said.
Despite the booming success of online shopping, the 50-year-old said he is not daunted by the prospect of competing with internet retailers."Your instrument needs to speak to you and feel right in your hands," he said. "If you buy an instrument off the internet, you do not know what you're getting.""You need to go to a place that's got several instruments you can try, and find what feels right for you."
There are some first-day nerves, but Mr Harris feels confident he will be welcomed to Wem's high street with open arms. "The support and feedback I've had locally has been absolutely immense," he said."I'm crossing my fingers - as long as I can put fuel in my wife's car, take my daughter to school and put food on the table, that'll do!"

Breakfast legend returns to BBC daytime for the first time four years after quitting sofa

A BREAKFAST legend has returned to BBC daytime for the first time four years after quitting the sofa. The presenter previously fronted the corporation's flagship morning show for nine years. 4 4 Louise Minchin, 56, became a regular anchor on BBC Breakfast in 2012 when she hosted the programme for three days a week. Initially she sat on the red sofa alongside the likes of Bill Turnbull and Charlie Stayt, 63. This was before she established a regular partnership with Dan Walker, 48, who now presents the news on 5. In June 2021, she announced she was leaving the show after 20 years on air before making her final departure in September. Now the star returned to daytime broadcasting on BBC One as she made an appearance on Morning Live. Gaby Roslin, 60, and Rav Wilding, 47, introduced the star as a 'consumer expert'. She appeared on the main rival to ITV 's This Morning to give her take on the drop in car insurance costs. Angela Rippon on Rip Off Britain. The TV personality was sat on the kitchen island alongside the likes of Dr Kiran Morjaria and gardener Mark Lane. Gaby took to her Instagram grid page as she revelled in the company of the broadcast veteran. BBC Breakfast hosts Naga Munchetty and Charlie Stayt forced to pull live broadcast after 'dead dog' shown on-screen She could be seen pushing Louise who swung on one of the show's plush swivel chairs in the brightly lit studio. She captioned the video: "Good morning everyone. Pre show shenanigans here @bbcmorninglive with @louiseminchin and we are so ready to spin around on this Friday morning." Before she took to the airwaves, Naga Munchetty and Charlie fronted the Friday edition of BBC Breakfast amid growing tensions. It has previously been revealed the show's editor Richard Frediani, has taken an extended period of leave amid claims of bullying. Naga, 50, is said to be at the 'end of her tether' with Frediani and the fractious working environment. She was also alleged to have used a slang term for a sexual act off-air in separate damning claims. A BBC spokesperson previously said: "While we do not comment on individual cases, we take all complaints about conduct at work extremely seriously and will not tolerate behaviour that is not in line with our values. "We have robust processes in place and would encourage any staff with concerns to raise them directly with us so they can be addressed.' The fresh claims emerged as Beeb bosses urged any member of staff with concerns to raise them. 4 4

How to get the Soho House look — by the woman who invented it

H ow to describe the Vicky Charles vibe. A cocktail of old and new, with a splash of British craft and a twist of what the self-effacing designer, 49, describes as 'nonsense'. Her name will be for ever linked to the interiors of the Soho House private members' clubs, where she worked her way up from waitressing, in the late Nineties, to global head of design. For hints at Charles's handwriting, see Soho Farmhouse in the Cotswolds, the Ned in London, Ludlow House in New York, Little Beach House in Malibu and Soho House Chicago. Many of her more recent projects are under NDAs. Since 2016, when she left to found Charles & Co, with Julia Corden, wife of the British comedian James Corden, she has been attracting celebrity clients, including George and Amal Clooney (for whom she has created two nurseries in a trio of homes), Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis, and David and Victoria Beckham, whose Oxfordshire home she worked on. According to several reports, it was Charles & Co that delivered Meghan and Harry's update of Frogmore Cottage. She won't be drawn on the rumours but confirms she will not be working for the world's most famous non-royals on their Montecito pad.
