Brighton, Fowlerville learn their team state wrestling draws
Brighton was given the No. 2 seed in Division 1 when seedings were announced Sunday by the Michigan High School Athletic Association. The Bulldogs will face No. 7 Macomb Dakota in the quarterfinals at 2:15 p.m. Friday.
Fowlerville is the No. 7 seed in Division 2. The Gladiators will take on second-seeded Freeland at 6:45 p.m. Friday in the quarterfinals.
No. 2 seeds are 30-1 against No. 7 seeds in the quarterfinals over the past eight seasons, the only exception being Allendale's 36-26 victory over Stevensville Lakeshore in a 2021 Division 2 quarterfinal. There was a double forfeit in Division 4 in 2021 because of COVID policies at the time.

Brighton had a close call as a No. 2 seed in 2018, beating rival Hartland 30-29 on its way to a berth in the state championship match.
Brighton is 27-0, beating three of the eight teams in the Division 1 quarterfinals, but the top seed went to Detroit Catholic Central. The Shamrocks have won the last two Division 1 championships and six of the last eight.
The Brighton-Dakota winner will face the Davison-Rockford winner in the Division 1 semifinals at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, with the state championship matches in all divisions taking place at 3:45 p.m. Saturday.
Detroit Catholic Central takes on Romeo and Clarkston faces Temperance Bedford on the other side of the bracket.
Dakota's only notable victory over a Division 1 team was a 38-36 decision over Romeo.
Fowlerville will face a Freeland team that reached the state championship match last season before losing 49-21 to a Lowell team that won its 11th straight Division 2 title.
Freeland has no victories over top-10 Division 2 opponents and lost 48-16 to Brighton. Fowlerville beat third-ranked Mason in the district championship match.
The Freeland-Fowlerville winner will face the New Boston Huron-Linden winner at noon Saturday in the semifinals. On the other side of the bracket, Lowell takes on Warren Woods-Tower and Three Rivers faces Greenville.

Does Colts' Day 3 draft pick have early advantage in positional battle?
There have only been two training camp practices for the Indianapolis Colts, but one Day 3 rookie looks like he may have the upper hand in a positional battle. While all eyes will be on the quarterback position--and understandably so--GM Chris Ballard highlighted a handful of other competitions taking place during training camp, one of which is for the swing tackle role off the bench. Competing for that job are Blake Freeland and fourth-round pick Jalen Travis, who appear to have the advantage at this time. During Thursday's practice, Braden Smith got a vet rest day, so starting at right tackle was Travis and not Freeland. Nothing, of course, is decided at this time, and as Joel Erickson of the Indy Star noted, perhaps the next time that one of these players needs to step in, Freeland could get the nod. However, this is at least noteworthy. Freeland would play 701 snaps as a rookie in 2023, but took his lumps. Last season, third-round pick Matt Goncalves overtook Freeland for the swing tackle role, and Travis is potentially doing the same. In his 2024 season at Iowa State, Travis was one of the best offensive tackles in college football when it came to pass protection. He allowed just one sack and 11 pressures on the year, ranking 15th in PFF's pass-blocking efficiency metric. "I think Travis has got a really good ceiling to what he's going to become in our league," Ballard said prior to training camp. "And Freeland has gotten bigger and stronger, which has been really encouraging." What will the Boston Celtics do with the roster spot opened up by JD Davison's departure?
What will the Boston Celtics do with the roster spot opened up by JD Davison's departure? The Celtics elected to waive the University of Alabama alum on Thursday (July 25) afternoon, presumably to get the team's roster under the NBA's second apron and all the penalties that brings teams like Boston. In so doing, they opened up a roster spot, but one that will require the right sort of player to fill on several levels, if they fill it at all. In order to make use of the roster spot in a way that makes sense, the Celtics would need to find a player making (or able to make) less than Davison did to keep the team from ending up right back where they started. Add in that the front office is likely looking for younger talent able to provide low-cost depth for when Boston gets back to trying to contend, and the pool of potential fits gets slim in a hurry -- at least before the passing of some of the regular season or other trades makes such moves less difficult. The cohosts of "Havlicek Stole the Pod" took some time on a recent episode of their show with guest Justin Turpin of WEEI to look at what Boston might do with that roster spot, as well as what else is on the team's plate in terms of issues needing closure for the rest of the 2025 NBA offseason. Take a look at the clip embedded below to hear what they had to say about that roster spot and more. Listen to "Havlicek Stole the Pod" on: Spotify: iTunes: YouTube:

'I was always going to go with my gut'
Coventry City goalkeeper Carl Rushworth says it was a gut decision to join the Sky Blues after speaking with boss Frank Lampard and midfielder Matt Grimes. Rushworth, who joined Coventry on loan from Brighton on Thursday, previously played with Grimes during their time together at Swansea City during the 2023-24 season. "[Lampard] is putting all the ownership into my hands," Rushworth told BBC Radio CWR. "It's not like he would like me to play out, he's not saying we are stuck in those ways. He believes in me to play what I see and I have the backing from him. "Along with speaking with [Matt] Grimesy and having a non-biased opinion about how much he was loving this club and loving his time here. I was always going to go with my gut." It's not just talk that drew Rushworth's attention, it's also the possibility of adding a promotion to his CV with usual Sky Blues number one Oliver Dovin likely to be ruled out for the start of the season. "The plan is just to compete and try and play as many games as possible and look to get promoted," the keeper added. "That's something that is very exciting for me to think about and it's actually very realistic as well." Listen to the full interview with Carl Rushworth and more on BBC Sounds.
