
Conditions ‘really tough' for running UK businesses, says Gary Neville
The former England and Manchester United player has built up a business empire including commercial properties, hotels and media companies since retiring.

On Tuesday, Mr Neville was also appointed brand ambassador of business software firm Sage as it launched a new long-term partnership with the English Football League (EFL).

He told the PA news agency that there are 'huge opportunities' for how football clubs and businesses can join forces to help drive growth in regions across the UK.
Mr Neville said: 'The impact of having Football League clubs, and those crowds and attendance, is massive for the local economy and businesses. And not just in terms of actual financial terms but in terms of the spirit of a city and a town too.
'A successful football club and a football club that's thriving can definitely have a big impact on small businesses in the surrounding town or city.

'Local businesses thrive upon those local match days, and the successful team having more matches at home so they can make more money, because it's bloody hard work to make money for local businesses, and they need supporting on a regular basis.'
Nevertheless, he stressed that it was a 'challenging' time to run a business in the UK after sharp recent cost increases and pressure on consumer demand.
The Sky Sports pundit runs a raft of businesses including League Two club Salford City, which he owns as part of a group including David Beckham and US businessman Declan Kelly.
'It's tough. It's really, really tough because cost of products gone up, cost of everything, utilities, rents, everything, has gone up,' Mr Neville said.

'It is challenging at this moment in time – there are certain sectors where it's tough to operate, just purely because of rising costs and people finding it tough to be able to find the money to go and support those local businesses.'
His work with Sage comes as the firm becomes the official accounting software partner for the EFL.
The group has launched a new UK campaign to champion local businesses, with fans across all 72 EFL clubs invited to nominate the matchday heroes in their community.
Steve Hare, chief executive of Sage, said: 'We've been supporting British small businesses since we were founded, including many football clubs up and down the country.

'It's fantastic to bring all of this together in support of the small businesses that power the football experience week in, week out.'
Mr Neville added: 'I've seen it from my time as a player and now as an owner, just how vital these businesses are. I'm proud to join Sage in celebrating their contribution and helping them thrive.'

There are several companies – including Eufy, Blink, Yale and TP-Link – that sell security systems with no monthly fee. They often make cloud storage available as an optional extra, but since video recordings are recorded locally, on the system itself, the subscription is exactly that: optional. Why pay for a home security subscription? Before we get to the options for best home security system without a subscription, it's worth reminding ourselves why some systems demand a monthly or annual fee to unlock full functionality. Ring is perhaps the best-known example, since even its simplest video doorbells and security cameras require a subscription to work properly. Without paying the fee, Ring's cameras and doorbells don't store any video footage. They still stream live to the Ring app – so you can see who's at the door when they press the button. But past events can't be accessed, so you won't be able to see what motion triggered your security camera while you were asleep. Ring's alarm kit also requires a subscription to enable its cellular and battery-backup systems, which keep the system online during a broadband outage or power cut. Other systems, like those from Simplisafe and Verisure, charge a fee for cloud video storage, as well as for access to their 24/7 professional monitoring services. This is where trained agents respond to your alarm, make contact with you, and, if necessary, call emergency services. Best home security systems without a subscription At the time of writing, in mid-2025, my favourite home security system without a subscription is made by Eufy. This is because Eufy's security cameras and video doorbells all record footage locally, either to the device's own integrated storage, a microSD card, or to the company's HomeBase, which acts as a central hub with expandable storage. Eufy's third-generation HomeBase also adds artificial intelligence to your compatible cameras and doorbell, which helps your security system recognise friendly faces (like your family members) and not alert you when they're spotted. Cloud storage is offered by Eufy, priced from £3.99 to £12.99 a month, but it's purely optional. All other features are included in the up-front price of the hardware. It's a similar case with Yale, whose security system also works without a subscription. The Yale Smart Alarm kit is simpler than some rivals, with a fairly basic smartphone app. But it comes from a trusted brand and, unlike most other systems, includes a wireless external siren for mounting on an outside wall. The system can be expanded with more sensors, motion detectors and cameras, and a key benefit is how the devices have a 1km (0.62 mile) wireless range – far greater than that of Yale's rivals. Like Eufy, Yale offers an optional subscription. Called Secure Plan, this costs £9 a month and adds cellular backup to the alarm system, where it uses the mobile phone network to stay online if your broadband goes off. The plan also unlocks a system where up to three emergency contacts receive an automated call when your alarm is triggered; although, they are not contacted by a human, as with professionally monitored systems. Subscribing opens up cloud storage for Yale's cameras, too, and enables an AI-powered system for differentiating between the motion of people, pets, vehicles and package deliveries. Granted, it's a good-value package (and you get six months' free with some purchases), but Yale's system uses local storage by default, so paying the fee isn't strictly necessary. Without it, you still have a fully functional security system. Blink is another security system that runs without a subscription, but here things work a little differently. Blink cameras on their own require a cloud storage subscription, since they don't save footage locally. However, this changes if you also buy the Blink Sync Module 2, which costs £40 (or is often bundled with cameras for a discount) and acts as a hub for connecting multiple cameras and a doorbell. It also has a microSD card slot, into which you can fit up to 256GB of local storage – and avoid paying the monthly fee for saving footage in the cloud. Blink plans start at just £2.50 a month and unlock extra features, like improved live streaming, video sharing, photo capture and cloud storage, but paying isn't a necessity like it is with Ring, the other Amazon-owned security company. The pros and cons of not paying for a home security subscription Pros: Avoid ongoing costs (which also often increase over time) You control your recordings; no uploading to third-party servers Reduced feeling of being locked into a product ecosystem Keeps things simple, avoiding superfluous features Cons: No professional monitoring Misses out on extra functionality Limits your hardware choices Removes cellular backup (where available) Is paying a home security system subscription worth it? This depends on your budget and your security requirements. If all you want is a video doorbell on the front door and a security camera keeping an eye on your garden or drive, you'll be fine installing the devices and having them save footage locally. This even works if you want to build a larger system – perhaps even a whole home security platform with cameras, door sensors, sirens and motion detectors – if your primary goal is to be alerted to motion, then have that motion recorded. In this scenario, a subscription for extra features might not be worth it to you, especially if you pick Eufy products that have their own on-board storage and artificial intelligence. Subscriptions become worthwhile if you want more than these basics. If you want cloud storage, then paying a subscription is the only option, since companies don't offer this service for free. Similarly, if you want cellular backup for your Yale system, AI smarts from Blink, video storage from Ring or professional monitoring from Simplisafe and Verisure, then a subscription could be worth it.

Dollar drifts as investors await Fed governor replacement
SINGAPORE, Aug 6 (Reuters) - The dollar was rangebound on Wednesday, with investors choosing to stay on the sidelines ahead of U.S. President Donald Trump's pick to fill a coming vacancy on the Federal Reserve's Board of Governors. Trump said on Tuesday he will decide on a nominee by the end of the week and had separately narrowed the possible replacements for Fed Chair Jerome Powell to a short list of four. Data out the same day also showed the U.S. services sector activity unexpectedly flatlined in July even as input costs climbed by the most in nearly three years, underscoring the hit from Trump's tariffs on the economy, which has also begun to bite corporate earnings. Still, those did little to sway the dollar, as traders were hesitant to take on fresh positions ahead of news on who would fill the Fed board vacancy. Concerns are mounting that partisan loyalty would invade the staid world of central bank policy. The dollar was last little changed at 147.54 yen , while the euro ticked up 0.02% to $1.5760. Sterling last bought $1.3304. Moves in currencies overnight had been muted. "I still think that between now and the end of the week, if Trump is going to make an announcement about who he wants to fill the vacant board seat, depending on... how credible (the markets) view that candidate to be, I think that has the potential to prompt some reaction across everything," said Ray Attrill, head of FX research at National Australia Bank (NAB). "For me, that' the biggest swing factor for the next sort of 48 hours or so." While moves in the dollar have been more subdued this week, the currency has yet to recover from its steep losses on Friday, when it clocked its largest one-day percentage fall in nearly four months following an alarming jobs report. Against a basket of currencies, the dollar was last at 98.76 , still some distance away from its peak of 100.25 hit on Friday before the nonfarm payrolls figures. Traders continue to price in an over 90% chance of a Fed cut in September, with about 58 basis points worth of easing expected by the year-end. But data such as Tuesday's services ISM report underscore the fine line the Fed has to tread, as policymakers weigh rising price pressures from Trump's tariffs against signs of a weakening U.S. economy. "The services ISM has obviously got that kind of stagflationary whiff about it... that's obviously a bit of a two-edged sword in terms of what does that mean for policy," said NAB's Attrill. "At the moment, I think we're sort of of the view that maybe there's a bit too much confidence in the market about the certainty of a September move." In other currencies, the Australian dollar rose 0.15% to $0.6479, while the New Zealand dollar gained 0.23% to $0.5914. New Zealand's jobless rate rose slightly in the second quarter as the labour market remained soft, data on Wednesday showed, supporting the view that the central bank will proceed with a flagged 25 basis-point interest cut at its August policy meeting.

Keenan Allen reunites with Chargers on one-year deal
August 6 - Veteran receiver Keenan Allen has rejoined the Los Angeles Chargers after spending the 2024 season with the Chicago Bears. The Chargers announced his return Tuesday evening. NFL Network reported Allen has agreed to a one-year, $8.52 million deal. Allen was a six-time Pro Bowl selection during 11 seasons with the Chargers from 2013-23 -- the first four when the franchise was located in San Diego before the move to Los Angeles. Allen ranks second in Chargers history with 904 receptions and 10,530 receiving yards, trailing Antonio Gates (955 and 11,841, respectively), in both categories. Allen (59) is third on the franchise's career receiving touchdowns list behind Gates (116) and fellow Hall of Famer Lance Alworth (81). Allen, 33, ranks third among active NFL players with 974 receptions and has collected 100 or more catches on five occasions, including a team-record 108 in 2023. He is sixth among active players with 11,274 career receiving yards and eighth with 66 touchdown catches. He has played in 154 career NFL games.
