Missan's Buzurgan Oil Complex to Establish Gas Compression Unit with 70 MMscf Capacity

Iraqi News15-03-2025
Missan – INA
The Buzurgan Oil Complex has announced the establishment of a gas compression unit with a processing capacity of up to 70 million standard cubic feet per day (MMscf), as part of broader plans to fully utilize associated gas from Missan's oil fields.
Hassan Falahi, head of the gas processing division at Buzurgan Oil Complex, told the Iraqi News Agency (INA) that 'the gas processing division is a vital unit within the complex. A gas processing facility was established in 2018 with a capacity of 200 MMscf, of which 30 MMscf is used to generate power for the Buzurgan and Power Plant stations, while 10 MMscf is consumed in oil processing and other operational activities within the complex.'
He added that 'Missan Oil Company, in collaboration with the Ministry of Oil and the operational authority, has future plans to harness the full potential of associated gas from the province's fields. One of these initiatives is the compression unit, which will be built with a processing capacity of 50 to 70 MMscf. The gas will be transported to the Halfaya field to supply power stations in Al-Kahla district, with project implementation currently underway.'
Falahi further explained that 'another key project involves the expansion of the Power Plant station, which serves as the complex's internal power generation unit. If approved, the station will consume 47 MMscf of gas, with an additional 35 MMscf needed for planned upgrades to the generation units. Once all projects are completed, the entire volume of associated gas from Missan's oil fields will be utilized.'
He noted that 'the raw associated gas received at the complex originates from various fields and undergoes processing to be converted into sweet gas, which is then used for power generation and transported via pipelines, where it is compressed and pressurized. All power stations within the Buzurgan complex, including the gas processing division, rely on an independent power generation unit that was built in 2016 specifically for the complex and consumes approximately 17 MMscf of gas.'
On workforce development, Falahi highlighted that 'Iraqi employees in the gas processing division receive in-house training at the complex, while some are sent to Egypt for specialized programs in cooperation with Chinese partners. The division is one of the more modern units, aligning with global advancements and operating with advanced safety systems that minimize the risk of major incidents.'
Regarding maintenance, Falahi stated that 'an annual maintenance plan is in place, covering long-term overhauls in collaboration with the maintenance department, alongside quick repairs that can be completed within a day or two as needed.' He also revealed that 'progress on the 60-kilometer gas pipeline connecting the Buzurgan complex to the Halfaya field has reached approximately 80%, forming part of the gas compression station project to transport gas through this pipeline to Halfaya.'

UNAMI chief hopes Erbil-Baghdad financial deal holds

Also in Iraq MPs slam Baghdad for banning Kurdish in disputed areas Ali al-Gharbi: One of world's hottest places Iraq dismantles extremist group financing network Iraqi man remarries at age 92 A+ A- ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Mohamed al-Hassan, head of the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), said on Saturday he hopes the new agreement between Erbil and Baghdad will be a final settlement of long-running disputes over finances and oil. "God willing, it will be an agreement that ends all disputes and we won't return to this topic because it affects the rights of ordinary people in Iraq. I have a firm conviction that with the wisdom of Iraq's leaders, whether in Baghdad or Erbil or elsewhere, we hope for all the best," Hassan told Rudaw's Ziyad Ismail. Earlier this month, the federal and regional governments reached a new deal over finances and oil. Several similar deals have failed in the past. The Iraqi government approved the agreement during a cabinet meeting and subsequently resumed the disbursement of the salaries of the Kurdistan Regional Government's (KRG) civil servants. Tensions between Baghdad and Erbil escalated in late May when the federal finance ministry suspended transfers of funds, saying the KRG had exceeded its 12.67 percent share of the federal budget and failed to deliver oil to Iraq's State Oil Marketing Organization (SOMO). The freeze affected more than 1.2 million public sector employees in the Kurdistan Region. Iraq will hold parliamentary elections in November. The UNAMI chief said they have "a fundamental and active role in these elections. We call on Iraqis to be honest and trustworthy in their electoral decision." UNAMI's mission in Iraq will expire at the end of the year.

Iraq imports +18,000 Chinese vehicles in H1 2025

Shafaq News – Baghdad Iraq brought in over 18,000 vehicles from China during the first six months of 2025, up from 10,000 in the same period last year, the Iraq Future Foundation for Economic Studies and Consulting revealed on Saturday. Chinese auto exports to the Middle East jumped 65% in H1 2025, reaching more than 584,000 vehicles—up from 353,000 a year earlier. Export value rose to $7.7B from $4.5B, reflecting stronger demand and China's expanding foothold in regional markets. The United Arab Emirates was the top importer, receiving over 221,000 vehicles, more than double its 2024 total. Saudi Arabia followed with 123,000, while Turkiye brought in around 91,000. Jordan recorded the steepest growth, with imports surging 962% to more than 23,000—up from just 2,000 last year. Electric vehicles made up 10% of China's car exports to the region in H1 2025. The UAE led with 25,000 units, followed by Turkiye (20,000) and Jordan (15,000). Globally, China exported over 750,000 electric vehicles during the same period. Belgium ranked first worldwide, importing more than 100,000. The Foundation projects Chinese auto exports to the Middle East will surpass 1M by year's end, driven by accelerating demand and competitively priced EVs.

Turkiye seeks higher transit fees in new Iraq oil deal talks

Shafaq News – Baghdad/Ankara Iraq and Turkiye have begun preliminary discussions on a potential new agreement to resume crude oil exports through the Turkish port of Ceyhan, according to the Iraqi economic observatory Eco Iraq. The talks come amid Turkish demands to raise oil transit fees to $2.5 per barrel, significantly above the previous rate of $1 to $1.5. Ali Naji, a member of the observatory, told Shafaq News that before exports were halted in 2023, Iraq had been pumping around 500,000 barrels per day (bpd) through the Kirkuk–Ceyhan pipeline, sourced from fields in both Kirkuk and the Kurdistan Region. Exports were suspended after Iraq won an international arbitration case against Turkiye for violating the 1973 pipeline agreement. Naji said the current negotiations are still in early stages and have not yet reached formal talks or the drafting of a new agreement. He noted that the pipeline has a maximum export capacity of one million bpd, should it be restored to full operational levels. The pipeline, one of Iraq's oldest export routes to global markets, has faced repeated security and technical setbacks over the decades, including multiple sabotage attacks between 2004 and 2015 that caused extensive losses and disruptions. On July 21, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan formally signed the termination of the historic oil accord with Iraq, which had been in effect since 1973.
