Now Idaho school districts blindsided as US withholds over $33 million in federal aid
Idaho school districts have been unexpectedly hit by a freeze on more than $33 million in federal funding, leaving local education authorities scrambling to adjust budgets and staffing plans just weeks before the new academic year begins.
The payments, which had been previously approved by the US federal government, were due for release on July 1 but were suddenly withheld, causing significant disruption.
This latest freeze adds to a pattern of uncertainty in US education funding, compounding challenges for districts already managing tight budgets. The financial shortfall is forcing districts to reconsider support services, staff roles, and crucial educational programmes that affect vulnerable student populations.
Federal funding freeze triggers major budget shortfalls
On July 1, school districts across Idaho anticipated receiving federally allocated funds to finalise their financial and staffing decisions for the upcoming school year. However, the US government's unexpected withholding of these funds took many by surprise. As reported by KMVT, Twin Falls School District spokesperson Eva Craner likened the situation to receiving only part of a paycheck with a day's notice: 'It's kind of like getting a day notice a day before your payday that you're only going to receive a portion of your paycheck.

Twin Falls alone faces a $1.5 million shortfall, which could lead to cuts in educational programmes. Craner explained that the district will not provide migrant support or English language support to the extent originally planned. Although staff members involved in these programmes will not be laid off, they will be reassigned to other roles within the district, potentially affecting their pay.
Similarly, Blaine County School District is confronting a $170,000 gap.
Christy Castro, the district's special programmes director, indicated that new teacher mentor stipends and professional development for maths could be cut to address the deficit. 'Lacking that training could potentially impact the improvement of our maths scores and delivery of instruction,' Castro told KMVT.
Implications for Idaho's education landscape
The withheld funds, estimated at $33.3 million by the Idaho Department of Education, are critical to maintaining programmes that support migrant students, English learners, and professional development initiatives.
These funding interruptions complicate already tight local budgets and jeopardise key educational goals.
Idaho State Superintendent Debbie Critchfield released a statement, as quoted by KMVT, expressing hope for a quick resolution: 'We're hopeful we will know the timeline for distribution sooner rather than later, as decisions are being made now in local districts for the coming school year. We will continue to communicate with our local schools as we receive additional information from Washington, DC.'
The freeze arrives amid broader national concerns over education funding stability. Districts must now revise plans rapidly to cope with sudden financial uncertainty, with potential impacts on staff remuneration and student services.
As the new school year approaches, Idaho districts remain in a state of flux, awaiting clarity from the US federal government on when the withheld funds will be released.

Over 20 states sue Trump administration over education funds freeze; after-school programs in jeopardy, GOP districts among worst hit
Over 20 states sue Trump administration over education funds freeze (Image credits: AP) More than 20 states have sued the Donald Trump administration over its decision to freeze over $6 billion in federal education grants, including funds for after-school and summer programs that serve low-income families across the country. The funding freeze has especially hit Republican-led areas. According to an analysis by the left-leaning think tank New America, 91 of the 100 school districts that receive the most money from the affected grant programs are in Republican congressional districts. Half of those districts are in California, West Virginia, Florida, and Georgia. Among the programs at risk is the 21st Century Community Learning Centers initiative, which provides free academic support, enrichment, and child care for 1.4 million children at places like the Boys & Girls Clubs, the YMCA, and public schools. The Trump administration says the freeze is to ensure that the programs receiving funds align with the president's priorities. The Office of Management and Budget has cited concerns about support for undocumented immigrants and LGBTQ+ inclusion. In the meantime, programs around the country are struggling to stay open. In Rhode Island, the state stepped in with emergency funds to keep summer camps running. But leaders at the Boys & Girls Club of America warn that without federal money soon, some of their 926 clubs could begin shutting down in the next few weeks. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo The YMCA and Save the Children also report that many of their centers are at risk of closing. 'Time is of the essence,' said Christy Gleason of Save the Children Action Network. Her group supports after-school programming in 41 rural schools across Washington state and the South, where schools start as early as August. Even some Republican officials are voicing concern. Georgia schools superintendent Richard Woods, a Republican, said, 'I deeply believe in fiscal responsibility, which means evaluating the use of funds and seeking out efficiencies, but also means being responsible — releasing funds already approved by Congress and signed by President Trump," While some remain hopeful that the administration will eventually release the funds, others worry that delays will leave working families without support and children without safe, enriching environments after school. 'It's not too late to make a decision so the kids who really need this still have it,' Gleason said as quoted by AP.

Industrial estates in Nashik city to get drainage network under Amrut scheme
Nashik: The Ambad and Satpur industrial estates, both under the Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) jurisdiction, are set to receive drainage network projects through central govt's Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (Amrut) scheme. State urban development and transport minister Madhuri Misal confirmed this during Monday's state assembly session while responding to queries from MLA Saroj Ahire. Ahire had highlighted the long-standing lack of drainage in these MIDC areas. She said that although MIDC transferred control of the roads to the NMC in 1997, the civic body had failed to address the drainage infrastructure needs of these industrial zones. Replying to this, Misal admitted that both the authorities, MIDC and NMC, were negligent towards creating the drainage infrastructure in both the MIDC areas. "However, the drainage lines will be constructed in both the MIDC areas under the Amrut scheme 2. Instructions have been given to the civic administration to prepare the DPR and submit it to the govt," she said. According to the NMC, the drainage line project for both the MIDC areas of the city is estimated to cost Rs 300 crore. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Introducing the Carens Clavis Kia India Learn More Undo The industries have been requesting both, the NMC and MIDC to construct these drainage lines for the past decade. During the meeting, NMC commissioner Manisha Khatri also informed that they will be carrying out the drainage line project under the Amrut scheme.
