‘Kingdom' movie review: Vijay Deverakonda ‘almost' returns to form in an ‘almost' watchable action-drama
Unlike Sunny Deol in Gadar 2 or Shah Rukh Khan in Pathaan, you may not be able to call this as a great comeback, but the hunger to attack a meaty character to flesh out all the juiciness seems to have returned read more Cast: Vijay Devarakonda, Satya Dev, Bhagyashrii Borse & Manish Chaudhary Director: Gowtam Tinnanuri Language: Telugu Actor Vijay Devarakonda has had quite a lull at the movies off late. His anger, rage, fury, and those patented and petrifying gazes became repetitive. All of these show up in his new film Kingdom as well, but with a story that feels far more coherent and captivating. It's impossible for brooding central characters not to be heavily bearded. If you need to show your hero is in deep agony, don't make him shave. That also shows up in Kingdom, but again, the semi-engaging narrative exists to take care of the cliches. The leading man has dual characters to play. His boss is the always watchable Manish Chaudhari, whose memorably toxic character in Rocket Singh made me aghast at the idea of stepping into an office and reporting to a manager. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD A mission that obviously won't be revealed here, Deverakonda has to go undercover. The film has been written and directed by Gowtam Tinnanuri, the man behind Nani's immensely moving sports drama Jersey. The filmmaker has taken the grandeur miles ahead for his new film since he has given Kingdom the treatment of a high-octane spy thriller. The visuals are flawed but fascinating. The VFX and CGI-coded landscapes do at times act as a deterrence, but the central character's journey kind of cruises along smoothly to make you overlook the flaws. The one thing that's now getting tiresome is to see the leading man's supposedly intimidating empty glares at his leading ladies. And of course, grabbing them by their collars. Vijay did that with Ananya Panday in Liger, and he does that here with Bhagyashri Borse. But this time, the angst feels more personal. Kingdom has a tinge of Yash Chopra's Deewar when two brothers reunite only to find them on the opposite side of law. They are the two sides of the same coin that barely see eye to eye. The film has also been planned as a duology so there will be a lot of unanswered questions by the end of the film. Even the action scenes are different from the kind of stunts you are seeing in most of the movies today. The number of bullet shots easily overpowers the Animals and KGFs. Deverakonda lets his fists and guns do the talking. Even if you see the trailer of Kingdom, it's Manish Chaudhari's character doing most of the talking and dialoguebaazi. The leading man has only one line where he says he says with all his deadpan fury- Aag Laga doonga. This leading man has two different characters to portray, and as stated above, he has looked and performed much better in this movie. Unlike Sunny Deol in Gadar 2 or Shah Rukh Khan in Pathaan or even Salman Khan in Dabangg, you may not be able to call this as a great comeback, but the hunger and hunt to attack a meaty character to flesh out all the juiciness seems to have returned. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Rating: 2.5 (out of 5 stars) Kingdom is now playing in cinemas

Kingdom Twitter reviews: Internet hails Vijay Deverakonda's ‘career best performance' but calls film ‘one-time watch'
Kingdom Twitter reviews: Gowtam Tinnanuri's spy action thriller Kingdom, starring Vijay Deverakonda, finally hit theatres on July 31. As audiences flock to cinemas, social media, especially X (formerly Twitter), is buzzing with mixed reactions. While many moviegoers are praising Vijay Deverakonda's performance, others feel the film offers little in terms of novelty. Vijay Deverakonda's Kingdom opens to mixed reviews from the audience. Produced by Nag Vamsi, Kingdom has sparked divided opinions. Some viewers are calling the first half 'gripping' and 'well-paced,' while others are advising fans not to go in with high expectations. Here's a glimpse at what cinephiles are saying about Kingdom on its opening day. Kingdom Twitter reviews Calling the film a blockbuster, one of the viewers wrote, "#KingdomReview: Movie is a blockbuster, Story theme highlight of the Film, 1st Half Characters intro, 2nd Half deep drama. Performance in some scenes Career best for #VijayDeverakonda, Action & Music 🔥 and 2nd Half boat sequence." Another X user praised the film and wrote, "Kingdom is good action drama with high production values and acting, Gautham Thinnanuri once again hits the bullseye, Vijay Devarakonda's performance is lit, Anirudh's music will give high. The movie starts with an amazing first half and a good second half." Praising Vijay's performance and the film, an X user wrote, "Kingdom started with a bang. No deviation in the story right from the start!! Filled with good high moments. VD, the performer is back, Satya was equally good, Bhagya's role is limited. Top-notch production values with mass AniGod BGM. Ends with a decent cliffhanger." Moviegoers call Kingdom a one-time watch However, not everyone is impressed with film. One of the X users wrote, "#Kingdom is a decent one-time watch movie. Can have fair experience if expectations are kept low. Technicalities worked good than writing. 2/5 stars." Another wrote, "Firstly, I was really excited for the film. I've been waiting for it since I heard the name Gowtham Thinnanuri. The hype lived up to my expectations until I watched the film. It wasn't outright bad but I expected more. VD was good. Satya Dev was sufficient." Another tweet read, "#Kingdom - BOREDOM. A soulless, dull template action drama with zero emotional connection. Only VD & Satydev shine throughout. BGM by Anirudh is an added asset. Pre-climax & villain character show some promise, but that is quickly diluted. Overall, a below-average watch." One of the moviegoers called it a strictly one-time watch and wrote, "Kingdom is a very ordinary and routine. Nothing new and nothing interesting. Except few scenes, nothing is engaging. One time watch for Anirudh and VD's performance. The movie also ends with a very routine climax, which tries to elevate the next part. Strictly one-time watch." About Kingdom Apart from Vijay Deverakonda, the Telugu spy action thriller also stars Satyadev, Bhagyashri Borse, Goparaju Ramana, Manish Chaudhari and Baburaj among others in key roles. The film is said to be the first part of a planned duology. produced by Naga Vamsi and Sai Soujanya under the banners of Sithara Entertainments and Fortune Four Cinemas, the soundtrack of the film is given by Anirudh Ravichander.
