Income Tax Department cracks down on bogus claims of deductions, exemptions

India Gazettea day ago
New Delhi [India], July 14 (ANI): The Income Tax Department initiated a large-scale verification operation across multiple locations in the country on Monday, targeting individuals and entities facilitating fraudulent claims of deductions and exemptions in Income Tax Returns (ITRs).
This action follows a detailed analysis of the misuse of tax benefits under the Income-tax Act, 1961, often in collusion with professional intermediaries, as per a statement from Central Board of Direct Taxes.
CBDT said investigations have uncovered organised rackets operated by certain ITR preparers and intermediaries, who have been filing returns claiming fictitious deductions and exemptions.
These fraudulent filings, according to CBDT, involve the abuse of beneficial provisions, with some even submitting false TDS returns to claim excessive refunds.
To identify suspicious patterns, the Department has leveraged financial data received from third party sources, ground-level intelligence, and advanced artificial intelligence tools.
These findings are further substantiated by recent search and seizure operations conducted in Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Delhi, Gujarat, Punjab, and Madhya Pradesh, where evidence of fraudulent claims was found to have been used by various groups and entities, CBDT added.
CBDT analysis reveals rampant misuse of deductions under sections 10(13A), 80GGC, 80E, 80D, 80EE, 80EEB, 80G, 80GGA, and 80DDB.
'Exemptions have been claimed without valid justification. Employees of MNCs, PSUs, government bodies, academic institutions, and entrepreneurs are among those implicated. Taxpayers are often lured into these fraudulent schemes with promises of inflated refunds in return for a commission. Despite a fully e-enabled tax administration system, ineffective communication remains a significant hurdle in assisting taxpayers. It has been observed that such ITR preparers often create temporary email IDs solely for filing bulk returns, which are later abandoned, resulting in official notices going unread,' CBDT statement read.
In line with its guiding principle of 'Trust Taxpayers First', the Department said it has emphasised voluntary compliance.
'Over the past year, the Department has carried out extensive outreach efforts, including SMS and email advisories, nudging suspected taxpayers to revise their returns and pay the correct tax. Physical outreach programs, both on and off campus, have also been conducted. As a result, approximately 40,000 taxpayers have updated their returns in the last four months, voluntarily withdrawing false claims amounting to Rs 1,045 crore. However, many remain non-compliant, possibly under the influence of the masterminds behind these evasion rackets,' the statement added.
'The Department is now poised to take stern action against continued fraudulent claims, including penalties and prosecution wherever applicable. The ongoing verification exercise across 150 premises is expected to yield crucial evidence, including digital records, that will aid in dismantling the networks behind these schemes and ensure accountability under the law.'
Further investigations are currently underway. Taxpayers are again advised to file correct particulars of their income and communication coordinates and not be influenced by advice from unauthorized agents or intermediaries promising undue refunds. (ANI)

Indian delegation in US, Trump says 'we're going to have access' as trade talks progress

Trade talks between the US and India are gaining momentum as President Donald Trump signals progress on a potential trade deal, crediting his tariff policies for opening 'access' to Indian markets read more US President Donald Trump on Tuesday asserted that the country is making notable progress in gaining access to India's markets, attributing the breakthrough to his tough tariff policies and hinting at an outcome toward a coming trade deal. He said that his tariffs have helped the US dismantle barriers that previously hindered American businesses. 'We're going to have access into India,' Trump said, while announcing a trade agreement with Indonesia following a call with President Prabowo Subianto. 'You have to understand, we had no access into any of these countries. Our people couldn't go in. And now we're getting access because of what we're doing with the tariffs.' We will… — ANI (@ANI) July 15, 2025 Although the White House has not released concrete information about the scope or progress of the proposed US-India trade agreement, Trump's comments point to a fresh effort to reshape America's trade ties across Asia. Moreover, a high-level team from the Ministry of Commerce and Trade is also in the US to negotiate further, as India is firm on protecting its dairy and agriculture sector. Trump pointed out that his tough tariff stance is yielding results. 'Now we're getting access,' he repeated, positioning the development as a direct outcome of his trade policies. Donald Trump has frequently insisted that a trade deal with India is almost finalized, though a few outstanding issues remain. Interestingly, experts on US-India relations suggest it's actually beneficial that Trump hasn't yet sent an official letter to New Delhi. Meanwhile, India's trade delegation, headed by chief negotiator Rajesh Agrawal, is in Washington for scheduled talks, fueling renewed hopes for a potential agreement. Among all US trading partners facing Trump's proposed 'reciprocal tariffs,' India is the largest and stands out because, unlike the EU, South Korea, Japan, Canada, and Mexico, it has not received a formal letter from Trump threatening 25 to 35 percent tariffs starting August 1. "She Was Murdered": Father Of Odisha Woman Who Set Herself On Fire

Balasore: The father of the victim who died from self-immolation in Odisha's Balasore on Tuesday claimed that his daughter did not die by suicide but was murdered. He demanded that the state government treat the case as a murder and punish all those involved. Speaking to ANI, the victim's father said, "Everyone together forced my daughter to die. Isn't that murder? I believe it was a conspiracy because she used to raise her voice in college, and they didn't like it." Referring to her last visit to the college principal's office, the victim's father questioned the circumstances leading to her death. "They all conspired to force my daughter to commit suicide. Why did she commit suicide right after coming out of the Principal's room? Something must have happened inside. What happened inside? Why was she called in alone? Why wasn't I or my son called? I request the government to acknowledge that my daughter didn't die, she was killed, and everyone should be charged with murder," he said. The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) will organise a protest rally on Wednesday in response to the death of a 20-year-old student, who died after setting herself on fire following repeated complaints of sexual harassment by a college teacher that were allegedly ignored. The party has also demanded Rs 1 crore compensation for the victim's family and a judicial inquiry into the incident. BJD MLA Goutam Buddha Das told ANI, "It is very unfortunate news that a girl from our constituency died due to self-immolation. The student was being harassed by her teacher. She complained to the college principal, went to the MPs, and tweeted the same to the CM and the education minister. No one listened to her. The government is responsible for this." "We have decided to close Balasore tomorrow. We will organise a protest rally. We demand that the family of the victim should get the compensation of Rs 1 crore, and a judicial inquiry should happen," he added. The 20-year-old student had allegedly faced prolonged sexual harassment by the Head of Department (HoD) at Fakir Mohan (Autonomous) College in Balasore. Despite filing a formal complaint and seeking help from the college principal, her grievances reportedly went unheard, leading her to take the extreme step on campus last Saturday. She was initially admitted to the Balasore district hospital and later referred to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Bhubaneswar, where she succumbed to her burn injuries on Monday, hospital authorities said. In connection with the case, Fakir Mohan College's HoD, Samira Kumar Sahu, and Principal, Dilip Ghose, have been arrested.
