England beat India by 22 runs on a final day of simmering tension and high drama in the third test at Lord's on Monday to move 2-1 up in the series.
Shoaib Bashir bowled Mohammed Siraj for four to seal victory, India's number 11 playing a defensive stroke before the ball trickled down the face of his bat and rolled on to the stumps as he watched on in disbelief.
As the England players celebrated wildly, Ravindra Jadeja trudged off the field after making a valiant unbeaten 61 to take India to the brink of an extraordinary win.
The hosts had looked on course for a far more comfortable victory when they reduced India to 112-8 at lunch, but Jadeja and Jasprit Bumrah battled for nearly two hours to inch their team towards a target of 193.
Jadeja was given out lbw to Chris Woakes by the umpire but the decision was overturned on review and the left-hander heaved the next delivery over mid-wicket for six, prompting loud cheers from the Indian fans.
England finally made the breakthrough when Bumrah, on five, skied an attempted pull off Ben Stokes and was caught by substitute fielder Sam Cook.
The majority of the crowd erupted with a mixture of joy and relief but Jadeja continued to frustrate England, reaching his 50, off 150 balls, by edging Stokes over the slips for four.
Siraj survived 30 deliveries for his four runs as Jadeja farmed the bowling and took a succession of singles off the fourth ball of the over to dominate the strike.
Siraj suffered a painful blow to his shoulder after being struck by a Jofra Archer delivery and shortly afterwards his resistance was finally broken.
England had claimed four wickets in the morning to take charge of the match after India resumed on 58-4.
Rishabh Pant played an extraordinary one-handed straight drive for four off Archer to move to nine, but the fast bowler responded two balls later with an excellent delivery which uprooted his off stump.
Stokes snared KL Rahul lbw for 39, the England captain dropping to his knees and imploring the umpire to give him out.
He refused to do so but England called for a review and the decision was overturned to huge cheers from the crowd.
Washington Sundar was next to fall for a duck, Archer leaping to his right to take a superb one-handed catch off his own bowling.
Jadeja and Nitish Kumar Reddy frustrated England with solid defence in a partnership of 30 until Woakes found the edge of Reddy's bat just before lunch to give the hosts a huge lift as they left the field to warm applause from a packed crowd.
The series is level at 1-1.

Cricket: New Black Caps coach Rob Walter's insight expected to help against South Africa

The Black Caps are set to play their first series under new coach Rob Walter in Zimbabwe, starting on Wednesday night. New Zealand are in southern Africa for a T20 Tri-Series involving Zimbabwe and South Africa, before playing two tests against Zimbabwe. Walter took over as head coach from Gary Stead last month. Mitchell Santner captains the T20 side, while Tom Latham will lead the test side. Santner said Walter had settled into the side very easily. "We've been chatting a lot leading into this tour and he's been around domestic teams in New Zealand (coached both Otago and Central Districts)," Santner said on the eve of their first game. "He's bringing in a fresh way to approach things, which has been good for this group." Walter is a South African and had helped the Proteas' white-ball sides over the last couple of years. Photo: AFP Santner said while they knew the South African players well, Walter's insight would help. "If you have a coach that has been in a few different environments then they're going to pick up on things that a team does or does not do well, and Rob has shared his views on both. "The great thing about Rob is that he is very personable with everyone and he'll tell you straight, and that's all the players really want. "It's great to have that inside knowledge on how we are going to play and how [opposition sides] may operate at times." It was a long time since New Zealand had been in Zimbabwe. They last played a test there in 2016, and limited-overs games in 2015. New Zealand players involved in the Major League final in the US - Rachin Ravindra, Glenn Phillips, Michael Bracewell and Mark Chapman - won't be involved in the opening game as they only arrive in the country a few hours before. That means the three players that were called in as cover - Jimmy Neesham, Mitch Hay and Tim Robinson - could get a callup for the game against South Africa. South Africa beat Zimbabwe by five wickets in the opening game of the tri-series, with debutant Rubin Hermann top scoring with 45. Lions winger Mack Hansen in doubt for series-opener against Wallabies

Ireland's Mack Hansen tries to evade All Black Damian McKenzie in a test match at Aviva Stadium in Dublin, 8 November, 2024. Photo: PHOTOSPORT British & Irish Lions winger Mack Hansen is a doubt for the series-opening test against Australia on Saturday following a foot injury sustained in the tour match against the Australia-New Zealand invitational XV. Hansen did not participate in full training on Tuesday, Lions staff confirmed, a day after Scotland winger Darcy Graham was brought into the Lions squad from New Zealand. "He hurt his foot in the game, I don't think it is anything serious but he was managed today," Lions assistant coach Richard Wigglesworth told British media. "Hopefully he will be fully integrated pretty quickly. It is nothing that we are overly concerned about but we need to make sure we have enough numbers at training. "But it doesn't look too serious. A doubt is anyone who didn't train fully today, but he's definitely not ruled out." Hansen adds to the Lions' backline concerns following injuries to fullback Blair Kinghorn and centre Garry Ringrose. Fullback Elliot Daly left Australia after being ruled out of the series with a fractured arm. Hugo Keenan, who started in the 48-0 thumping of AUNZ at Adelaide Oval , is expected to start at fullback for the Lions, with Marcus Smith able to provide cover from the bench. Owen Farrell is another midfield option for head coach and father Andy Farrell, who already has Bundee Aki, Sione Tuipulotu and Huw Jones in his squad. Owen Farrell was solid in his 30-minute cameo at No 12 against AUNZ, and Wigglesworth said he was enjoying working with the former England captain. "He's been great, as we knew he would be. Not everyone did, but we knew," said Wigglesworth. "You all know how good he is, the influence he has, his knowledge and how he helps other people get better. "He's the influential Owen that we know and love." - Reuters
