Medical staff loses Rs 20 lakh in online fraud
A case has been booked under Sections 318 (4) of the BNS Act and 66D of the IT Act at the cyber police station here, following an FIR by the victim on Friday. Police are investigating the case to identify the fraudulent trading company and try to recovery the money. A police officer said they are also trying to freeze the bank accounts of the firms, suspecting their involvement in other online frauds.
Police added that at least four bank accounts were involved in the case and verification was on to establish the state of those accounts.
Last month, the victim received a call on a social media platform and received a link which appeared to be from a popular online trading firm. The caller assured him of getting a good profit from his investment. Initially he received a profitable return, which encouraged him to invest more.
From June 10 to July 11, he invested over Rs 22.50 lakh and transferred the money to four accounts of different banks as per the direction of the caller.
Recently, he tried withdrawing Rs 80,000 bonus towards his investment, as assured by the caller but he could neither access the funds nor the bank accounts.
The scammers had assured to give him Rs 3 lakh against an investment of Rs 1 lakh.
"We have repeatedly urged people not to invest their money on any online trading firm without proper verification. Despite this, people continue to fall prey to cybercriminals. If anyone identifies himself as an officer of TRAI or CBI and starts threatening you, immediately bring it to the police's notice," Berhampur SP Saravana Vivek M said.

Army jawan held for 2020 Vapi double murder
Surat: Sleuths of the Valsad local crime branch on Monday arrested an Army jawan, Pankaj Kumar Shah (34), for his alleged involvement in the Jan 2020 double murder at Chanod Colony in Vapi town of Valsad district. Shah allegedly shot two women dead with a pistol, at the home of one of them, as part of a Rs 2.5 lakh contract killing deal. Police had earlier arrested Bipin Mahanto, the son of one of the victims, his friend Kundan Giri, and Shah's accomplice, Mukesh Singh. Shah had been on the run ever since the crime and kept moving about, investigators said. He was finally caught at a hotel near Cheethwari in Rajasthan. Police said he kept moving between Greater Noida and Rajasthan. On Jan 11, 2020, a brutal double murder unfolded. Rekha Brahmdev Mahanto and her friend Anita alias Durga Shekhar Khadse were fatally shot by assailants on a red motorcycle without a registration number. Shah first scouted around in Vapi in 2019 before returning to execute the killing. Shah roped in Singh, a resident of Bihar, to help in the crime. In Jan 2020, they came to Vapi, where Bipin Mahanto arranged a motorcycle for them. On the day of the killing, Giri, Shah and Singh went to the spot on a motorcycle. Giri got off at KBS Colony and kept watch. Shah and Singh proceeded to Mahanto's residence, where Singh waited outside while Shah went in with a pistol. Shah shot Mahanto and when Khadse emerged on hearing the gunshots, he shot her as well. The trio fled the scene on the motorcycle. The other three accused had been caught earlier while Shah remained at large. The investigation revealed that Shah was posted as a craftsman with 119 FWC 135 Brigade at Manjakote in Jammu and Kashmir. He has been a working member of the 606 Electronics and Mechanical Engineering (EME) battalion based in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, for 15 years.

Two caught with 28kg of gold paste at Surat airport
Surat: The Central Industrial Security Force ( CISF ) thwarted a gold smuggling attempt at the Surat international airport on Sunday and seized 28kg of gold paste, which two passengers from Dubai had allegedly concealed on their bodies. The paste is estimated to contain 23kg of gold, worth about Rs 23 lakh. The customs department is yet to declare the exact amount of gold recovered and its value. After the arrival of Air India Flight IX-174 from Dubai, a CISF soldier monitoring the international arrivals area got suspicious of two passengers who had disembarked at about 10pm. Their unusual behaviour prompted the CISF vigilance team to conduct a thorough examination of their belongings. Working with customs officers, the CISF team discovered the gold paste, ingeniously concealed on the bodies of the two individuals. The gold paste method is commonly used by smugglers to evade detection. Customs officials launched an investigation to uncover the broader network behind this smuggling attempt. The identities of the passengers have not been disclosed as the investigation is ongoing. The accused will likely be produced in court on Tuesday. The process to recover the gold from the paste is underway.

Seventh arrest: Man held for building road in Nuh Aravalis
Gurgaon: The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Monday made the seventh arrest in the illegal road construction case in the protected Aravali area near Basai Meo village, under Ferozepur Jhirka police station limits. Sakeel, the latest arrestee, is a resident of the village. He allegedly used his machinery, including a JCB, three road construction machines, and a tractor, for laying two illegal 33-foot-wide roads by pouring concrete without any administrative approval. These roads lead directly into the ecologically sensitive Aravali hills. During interrogation, he disclosed that he was paid by Hanif for carrying out the work. Authorities said Sakeel will be produced in court and taken on remand for further questioning. Earlier, the ACB arrested six persons, including three retired officials from the consolidation department and two private individuals, Sher Mohammad, Mohammad Latif, and Bijendra Rana, who was the district revenue officer (DRO) in 2024, and held additional charge as the consolidation officer (chakbandi adhikari). Basai Meo has been under scrutiny following revelations that illegal road construction and mining were carried out in forest and agricultural land, directly violating Supreme Court directives and environmental norms. The CEC report confirmed the illegal construction of a 1.5km road, allegedly created to facilitate transportation for illegal stone mining. The committee also noted inaction from the local panchayat and raised questions about the role of elected representatives. The Haryana govt, instead of focusing solely on internal enforcement, petitioned the Supreme Court to extend the mining ban 5km into Rajasthan, claiming illegal operations just across the border were spilling into Haryana.
