
Eddie Huang Is Back Cooking in New York — And Wants to Open a Restaurant
The seasonal residency, he's calling Gazebo, features a three-course dinner ($80 per person) that is 'fueled uniquely on olive oil from his wife's family field in Greece,' per a statement. The prix fixe includes dan dan noodles dressed with cherrystone clams and pancetta, lion's head meatballs, and whole-tail lobster toast with Hainan-style lobster claws over rice. It's a switch-up from Flower Shop's typical menu, a lineup of maitake rigatoni, shrimp tacos, and pan-roasted cauliflower steak. Gazebo runs from June to September, on Wednesdays to Fridays, with seatings at 7 p.m. or 9 p.m. Its inaugural night, Wednesday, June 11, is already sold out.
'I'm definitely looking for a space,' says Huang, who's condensing his current search to a 20-block radius of LES to Tribeca. But because of uncertain economic times, 'it's silly to sign a lease right now,' so he doesn't anticipate an opening until 2026.
In the meantime, the pop-up marks Huang's culinary return to his all-time, 'til-I-die' neighborhood in New York. Two years after its LES debut in 2009, BaoHaus relocated to the East Village into a storefront off of Union Square, until 2020 when it closed during the early days of the pandemic (there was also briefly a BaoHaus Los Angeles, which is also now closed). Xiao Ye, another Lower East Side endeavor, also closed after a short run. In the past five years, Huang has not publicly put his name behind another New York restaurant, focusing on the entertainment world.
He's officially a NY resident again, having moved back from LA with his wife and toddler this year. 'The wildfires were a sign to go home,' he says. The Hollywood industry can quickly become a complacent one, he adds. 'You get kind of sick waiting around for the phone to ring,' he says. 'Restaurants and food are the things I love. So it's nice to come back to do physical work.'
Dubbed a 'dance music-influenced' menu, Gazebo refers to the Bierut-born, well-traveled singer who rose to fame during the Italo-disco music craze of the 1980s. Huang specifically pays homage to his first hit single, 'Masterpiece' — a hit in Euro-Asian dance circles — which was released the same year he was born (and one he now sings to his son every night), according to his personal Substack.
Look for menu changes each month, which include the results of recent experimental dishes he's been working on at home. A quesadilla was a 'happy accident,' he says; the only way his son would eat his Iberico and clam stew is if it joined forces with his favorite food.
'So many people serve raw seafood on a plate,' says Huang, and his Peruvian-style ceviche stands out with Hokkaido scallops, Marcona almonds, and tiger's milk, which speaks to his time with Lima's legendary chef Javier Wong.
There's a reason for this particular pop-up location. Flower Shop opened in 2017 with big-name money behind it: Original investors included skateboard legend Tony Hawk and William Tisch, the son of New York Giants' co-owner Steve Tisch. Huang's fresh new partnership with the Flower Shop stemmed from a meeting that his NY fashion designer friend, Maxwell Osborne, set up with its co-owner, Dylan Hales (Randolph Beer). Flower Shop, which features a lower-level bar with a pool table, jukebox, and pink fireplace, added a second location in Austin last fall.
A former Cooking Channel and Vice host, Huang detailed his industry-hopping life as a lawyer to chef in a 2013 autobiography titled Fresh Off the Boat . His culinary fame that followed sparked an ABC show of the same name, which starred Randall Park and Constance Wu, and ended after six seasons in 2020. Most recently, he made Vice is Broke , a documentary on the downfall of the media company, where he formerly hosted a culinary show.
Momofuku founder and fellow Northern Virginia native David Chang, who has hosted Huang on his podcast, gave the forthcoming pop-up a shout-out on Instagram last week.

Simu Liu, Jeremy Lin headline celebrity basketball game at ARC World in Toronto
ARC World may be a celebration of Asian culture, but organizer Clement Chu hopes that people from all backgrounds come and enjoy the one-day festival in downtown Toronto. Food, shops, music and speakers will all be featured at Toronto Metropolitan University's Kerr Hall on Saturday, with a celebrity basketball game including actor Simu Liu and former Toronto Raptors star Jeremy Lin the day's finale. Chu said that there will be something for everyone, whether they have ties to Asia or not. 'The stories that some of these people are telling here, it's not just necessarily about them being Asian but it's a story of resilience,' he said in a recent phone interview. 'These are stories that apply way beyond, the Asian community so we hope people get that out of it. 'We hope people come enjoy the things that come from our culture, whether it's food or art or entertainment. More than anything else, we want to get young people out and volunteering and making contributions back to the community, because we feel a lot of that was lost during COVID.' Originally named the Chinese Canadian Youth Athletic Association, the Asian Roots Collective was founded 30 years ago by Chu and his friends to create a safe space to play basketball. Chu said that over time the organization's mission has broadened to include people with connections to all of Asia and to encompass other 'universal languages' that, like basketball, can bring people together even if there are other linguistic or cultural barriers. 'We want to showcase all these things that are excellent, that are happening,' said Chu. 'So we decided to change the direction of the organization a little bit, because we're no longer just Chinese, we're no longer just youth oriented programs, and we're sure as heck not just athletics. 'We wanted to have a calling card that was more representative of what we're doing. This year is the first year we're launching ARC World, which is this convention where we're celebrating all things Asian.' The acronym ARC still reflects those roots in basketball, however. 'Because we come from basketball, (the name) is like the three-point arc, your shot arc, but we're trying to tell a story now so this is a narrative arc,' said Chu. 'That was the inspiration behind the name of the organization.' ARC has come a long way since it was founded in 1995, the same year the Raptors started playing in Toronto. Back then, Chu and other leaders within the organization had to rent basketball courts at local high schools. Now they have their own athletic centre in Markham, Ont. 'We used to make that joke about, 'oh, you know, one day, as opposed to renting schools, we'd love to have the keys to gym,' because that's the dream of every kid, to have the keys to gym so you could shoot around,' he said. 'It's just funny because, like, fast forward, 30 years later, through some of these initiatives, we were able to raise enough money to build our own mini-community centre with a basketball hoop and stuff, but so now we do have the keys to the gym which is pretty, pretty cool. 'The only downside is, I'm so old now that I can't really play anymore, but the kids now have a place to run around, we have video games there, art, we teach coding, it's gone far beyond just basketball.' Arcadia Restaurant Blue Magpie Introduces Taiwanese Upscale Dining to SGV
One of Southern California's most ambitious new restaurants just made a quiet debut in the San Gabriel Valley. Blue Magpie, a modern Taiwanese fine dining restaurant named after the island's national bird, opened June 11 in Arcadia, taking over the former Rod's Grill space blocks away from the Santa Anita Park racetrack. The 3,500-square-foot space's transformation is striking, featuring chandeliers and a sleek, modern design with nods to the Formosan blue magpie bird throughout. Two private dining rooms are situated beyond a sleek dining area with chandeliers, custom wallpaper, and bird-patterned tile. Leading the kitchen is Taipei-born executive chef Leo Lo, who has opened several restaurants across Taiwan. The project is a collaboration with Kevin Tang, a local entrepreneur who grew up in the San Gabriel Valley and spent two years developing the room and concept. 'We had to redesign and rebuild the entire structure,' says Tang. 'I wanted to create something that felt true to Taiwanese culture but presented in a more layered and elegant way.' Tang, who has watched the number of Taiwanese restaurants in the area, like Old Country Cafe and the Kembo Truck, dwindle over the years, says he wanted to open Blue Magpie to fill a void. The San Gabriel Valley still thrives with regional Chinese restaurants, but few are focused on broadening Taiwanese cuisine through a fine dining lens. Blue Magpie serves lunch and dinner Tuesday through Sunday, with a weekend brunch menu that draws from Taiwanese street food but leans upscale. Meals begin with a complimentary plate of gobo root chips, crisp slices of burdock root fried until golden and lightly salted. Hakka-style pork belly and eggs. Chef Lo's menu reworks traditional Taiwanese food with contemporary influences. His three-cup duck, a twist on the classic chicken version that typically uses equal parts soy, rice wine, and sesame oil, is glazed in a rich sauce and served with cherry tomatoes and fresh basil. The dongpo rou gets served tableside: soy-braised pork belly comes with marinated eggs, Shaoxing wine, and a blanket of over-easy eggs that melt into the rice beneath. Càipǔdàn, a preserved radish omelet, gets an aromatic lift from truffle butter. A version of mala popcorn chicken arrives hot and crunchy, with Sichuan peppercorn, you tiao (Chinese fried cruller), and dried chiles. Other plates push Taiwanese flavors in new directions. Torched tableside, the Napa casserole layers sakura shrimp, dried scallops, and kurobuta pork under bubbling cheese. The 24-hour brewed chicken ambrosia soup comes loaded with prosciutto, bamboo shoots, and deep savory flavor. The fermented rice short ribs reinterpret a traditional red grain pork dish with a punch of lemon, peppers, and Shaoxing wine. Blue Magpie's hollandaise tofu is made with translucent slices of tofu topped with century egg hollandaise and pork floss, while a dragon whisker salad comes with chayote shoots, sesame oil, kombu vinaigrette, and bonito flakes. The brunch menu draws inspiration from Taiwanese street snacks; Lo applies modern takes on nostalgic flavors here, too. Options include a crispy chicken sandwich, a tea egg and milk toast sandwich, and a deep-fried lobster and prosciutto stack. While cocktails are currently served only at dinner, they reflect similar themes found throughout the menu. Many drinks are infused with Taiwanese teas, steeped or prepared sous vide for hours to bring out layered flavors. The Moonlight Bloom, made with osmanthus gaoliang, longan juice, and housemade osmanthus honey, is floral, bold, and slightly smoky. Other options include a winter melon highball and the Lady Camellia, made with jasmine gin, elderflower, and grapefruit. Homemade syrups, such as elderflower and longan honey, are used in several fruit-forward teas and sodas. The milk tea uses condensed milk slow-cooked for eight hours, then topped with zested orange peel, a dulce de leche milk foam, and seasonal Taiwanese fruit tea. Taiwanese flavors abound at mall giant Din Tai Fung, Vivian Ku's Joy and Pine & Crane restaurants, as well as Jon Yao's celebrated high-end tasting menu at Kato, but the cuisine still has plenty of room to grow in Southern California. 'We want to show that Taiwanese cuisine is more than street food or comfort fare,' Lo says. 'It is vibrant, diverse, and deeply expressive.' Blue Magpie is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for lunch and from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. for dinner, located at 41 W. Bad Bunny's residency is expected to be a financial boon for Puerto Rico
Bad Bunny's two-month residency is expected to be good business for the once-bankrupt Puerto Rico. On Friday, the musician kicks off a 30-date concert run in what's a normally slow time for tourism on the island. However, the Puerto Rican-born superstar, whose real name is Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, is giving the economy, hotel and flight bookings a much-needed boost. Discover Puerto Rico, the island's promotional agency, is forecasting Bad Bunny's residency to generate nearly $200 million in economic impact and that's on the conservative side. The firm's preliminary estimate is only based on hotel packages that it booked with the concert's production company and doesn't reflect people booking hotels or rentals on their own. In total, about 600,000 people are expected to visit Puerto Rico specifically for the concert, which is roughly double the number of visitors it usually gets, the tourism agency said. Plus, those fans were quick to book hotels six months in advance, following Bad Bunny's residency announcement in January. Typically, rooms during July through September are booked about two months in advance because travelers are cautious of the tropical conditions. The hotel occupancy rate for July and August is nearly 70% ahead of the same time period last year, according to Discover Puerto Rico. September bookings are also 20% higher compared to 2024. Searches for flights to Puerto Rico increased by 12% compared to the same time last year, according to Kayak, with airfares also rising 14% in that time span. The travel booking website told CNN that the top three states searching for Puerto Rico during the residency come from New York, Florida and California. On Thursday, JetBlue announced it was a sponsor for the residency, a fitting tie-in since it's the island's biggest airline. An increase in ticket sales could prove particularly beneficial for the airline, which forecast soft bookings for the rest of the year. Tickets for the 'No Me Quiero Ir De Aquí' residency sold out within hours of the January announcement. However, there's plenty on the resale websites like StubHub, with tickets priced from $300 to $5,000.
