Arsenal told they should ignore Real Madrid star after big 'transfer shame'

Daily Mirror26-06-2025
Arsenal have been tipped to spend big in their first summer with Andrea Berta in place as sporting director but a former club captain has urged them to overlook one target
Former Arsenal captain William Gallas believes the Gunners should put their faith in Gabriel Martinelli rather than breaking the bank for Rodrygo. Real Madrid star Rodrygo would cost north of £75million, and Gallas believes there's no need to part with that kind of money while Martinelli is at the club.
Arsenal are set for a busy summer as they aim to improve on last season's runner-up finish in the Premier League. Spanish goalkeeper Kepa is due to arrive from Chelsea this week, while te Gunners' striker search is likely to see one of Viktor Gyokeres or Benjamin Sesko join the club.

A new wide forward is also high on sporting director Andrea Berta's list, especially if Leandro Trossard ends up leaving this summer. However, Gallas isn't convinced Rodrygo would be an upgrade on what they have.

'Rodrygo might want to leave Real Madrid, but that doesn't mean he will want to play for Arsenal," Gallas told Prime Casino. 'I think it's important that Arsenal stick with Gabriel Martinelli because we have seen the level he can perform at.
"Things are difficult for Rodrygo at the moment but Arsenal might be better off sticking with what they have," he added. The 24-year-old scored 14 times in all competitions this season, but was limited to less than 2,000 minutes in the league
Nico Williams is another player linked with that left-sided berth. The Spanish international has been a long-term target, but appears destined for Barcelona if and when he leaves Athletic Club.
'It's a big shame that it looks like Nico Williams isn't going to Arsenal, we always love to see the best players in the Premier League and he would be one of them," Gallas added. 'I think his target is to stay in Spain and potentially join Barcelona.
"The football suits him well and he could form a partnership with Lamine Yamal. It'll be sad for Raphinha because he has played so well and extended his contract, maybe if he is going to keep his place then Bayern Munich could push to sign Williams.'

The links with Rodrygo come after the Brazil star remained on the bench for Real Madrid's second Club World Cup group game against Pachuca. A 3-1 victory over the Mexican side means Los Blancos will progress with a point against Red Bull Salzburg on Friday, but they're going for all three points.
"We have to improve and continue getting to know each other, because new players have arrived," midfielder Fede Valverde said ahead of the game. "We have to prepare in the best possible way because it's going to be a very important and demanding match. We have to try to get the three points to qualify in first place."

Barcelona draw up desperate transfer plan to solve major Marcus Rashford issue

Marcus Rashford has completed a season-long loan move to Barcelona but the Manchester United star is in the middle of a sticky situation involving the Catalan club Barcelona face a race against time to sell players to make room for Marcus Rashford in their squad, it has been claimed. The Catalan club face a familiar problem as they aim to register the England international, who completed a loan move from Manchester United in July. ‌ Last summer, Hansi Flick's side found themselves in a similar situation with Dani Olmo. The issue concerns La Liga's wage cap, wit clubs required to trim their bill - ideally by offloading senior players - if they want to add any new arrivals to their squad. ‌ They were eventually able to register Olmo in time for the start of the 2024-25 season, before being forced to jump through hoops for a second time in January. This time around, Rashford isn't the only one facing the same situation. ‌ Barca completed a loan move for Rashford with an option to buy, and he - along with new keeper Joan Garcia - need to be accommodated. According to Sport (via Football Espana), the club will also need to re-register Wojciech Szczesny after the Polish international's contract expired and he signed fresh terms. The club are also looking to register youngsters Gerard Martin and Marc Bernal as first-teamers, as well as new signing Roony Bardghji. Swedish winger Bardghji joined from FC Copenhagen earlier in the summer, but will reportedly only be added to the first-team squad after the other five. Barcelona will get their campaign underway against Mallorca on August 16. They have previously expressed confidence over doing what they need to do to ensure Rashford can play a part, but they're not there yet. A number of players have already left this summer, including Pablo Torre - who could feature against them for Mallorca on the opening day. Clement Lenglet and Pau Victor are among the others to leave permanently, while Ansu Fati's loan to Monaco will see the Ligue 1 club cover a portion of the player's wages. The future of Marc Andre ter Stegen could remain a key factor when it comes to Barca registering new players. The German goalkeeper missed most of last season through injury, and Barca had looked to register Garcia as an injury replacement - thereby not having to find extra wage budget for him. ‌ Those short-term replacements account for players expected to miss four months or more, and Ter Stegen has publicly denied this to be the case. According to reports in Spain, the club have begun disciplinary proceedings against the former Borussia Monchengladbach stopper, who is still Barca's captain - though some board members are said to have questioned whether he should retain the armband. The injury clause allowed Barca to register Olmo last season. Danish defender Christensen missed the first half of the campaign with an achilles issue, but Olmo needed to be re-registered upon the centre-back's January return. Benjamin Sesko facing Man Utd or Newcastle decision dilemma with Amorim willing to flog Hojlund to make room for him

BENJAMIN SESKO could choose his Premier League dream team after Manchester United rivalled Newcastle with a £74million offer. Toon are also working on a deal for RB Leipzig striker Sesko, 22, after lodging a similar bid earlier this week but United have now made their move. 7 7 7 The Red Devils offered an initial £65m plus around £8.9m in performance-related add-ons. The Slovenia striker will train away from his team-mates on Wednesday morning in Germany as both Prem clubs fight for his signature. Leipzig hope that a bidding war cranks up over the next few days to drive up the price. If both offers remain the same, Sesko could be able to pick between which club he wants to join after telling BOTH he is open to a move. Despite Newcastle playing in the Champions League this season, United will still fancy their chances of landing one of Europe's hottest young prospects. United are desperate for a new striker after failing in their attempt to sign Viktor Gyokeres, who joined Arsenal in a £63.5m deal. United boss Ruben Amorim is also willing to let Rasmus Hojlund leave the club in order to make space for Sesko, even if United only receive a £30m transfer fee. Newcastle are keen to sign Sesko, knowing they could lose Alexander Isak to Liverpool. 7 Meanwhile, the Red Devils have rejected FIVE different approaches to sell Harry Maguire this transfer window. United have turned down three Prem clubs and two bids from Italy for the England defender. Maguire's deal ends this season, meaning he can sign a pre-contract agreement with a foreign club from January. But he is ready to give United everything despite his contract situation. Maguire, 32, who has won the Carabao Cup and FA Cup since signing from Leicester in an £85m deal in 2019, said: 'I just want to be part of a successful team this season. 'Last season was a tough season for everyone individually — but also as a team, as a squad, and as a club. 7 7 'This season, there are no excuses. 'We're going to have a lot of time to prepare for the Premier League games — and we've got to make sure we're ready. 'For myself, it's making sure I'm available, I'm fit, I'm ready to go, and give everything I can to this team and this club.'

Arsenal's No9s rated and slated as Viktor Gyokeres bids to finally end Mikel Arteta's long wait for reliable striker

ARSENAL hope to have finally found their dream striker who can lead the line for years. Viktor Gyokeres is expected to make his Emirates debut in front of a 55,000-plus crowd when the Gunners play Villarreal in their first home friendly of the season on Wednesday night. 9 9 9 Arsene Wenger's Invincibles of 21 years ago boasted the stardust of Thierry Henry and Dennis Bergkamp up front. Arsenal have ever since been on a search to find another prolific, reliable and injury-free No 9 — but the majority of signings have proved to be misses rather than hits. ROBIN VAN PERSIE In 2004, still basking in the glory of their record-breaking season, Dutchman Van Persie joined from Feyenoord for £2.75million. His goal ratio was excellent, although he was hampered by a few nasty injuries, and then headed off to Manchester United to fire them to the title. 8 NICKLAS BENDTNER Ahead of their final season at Highbury in 2005, Arsenal signed a 17-year-old Bendtner, who spent nine years on the club's payroll. Although a reasonable player, the Dane was nowhere near as good as he thought he was. In 2009, he switched shirt numbers from 26 to 52 because his new deal was worth £52,000 a week. 5 EMMANUEL ADEBAYOR Scored 12 goals in his first full campaign at the new Emirates home after switching from Monaco in 2006. Togo star Adebayor could have achieved more but left for Manchester City then Spurs — which made him a figure of hate among Gunners supporters. 6 Arsenal's 2025-26 third kit 'leaked' and fans absolutely love it EDUARDO A talented striker — but we will never know what could have been. Eduardo joined from Dinamo Zagreb in 2007 and was doing well until he suffered a horrific leg break in a tackle by Birmingham's Martin Taylor. He was never the same player again. 6 MAROUANE CHAMAKH 9 Moroccan frontman arrived from Bordeaux in 2010 but is mainly remembered for his hairstyles. Known among team-mates for poor timekeeping, he once turned up late for an away trip in a white chauffeur-driven limousine. 4 PARK CHU-YOUNG A disaster. The Monaco man was in the middle of his medical at Lille in 2011 when he learned there was interest from Arsenal. He arrived in London just 24 hours before both Mikel Arteta and Per Mertesacker but unlike the other two, he barely played. In three seasons, the South Korean made just one sub-appearance in the Prem. 1 LUKAS PODOLSKI 9 One of the club's most high-profile signings remains a big crowd favourite — but Podolski never reached the highest levels. Arriving from Cologne, he had an uneasy relationship with boss Wenger and went out on loan to Inter Milan. A stunning volley against Montpellier in the Champions League is considered his best Arsenal moment. 6 OLIVIER GIROUD At the same time as Podolski, Giroud was signed having just fired Montpellier to a shock Ligue 1 title. With 105 goals in a six-year spell, the Frenchman the Frenchman could be effective but he was also known as a big-game flop, missing vital chances. At Chelsea, he helped secure victories in both the Champions League and Europa League. 6 YAYA SANOGO 9 A total failure. The ex-Auxerre forward spent four years at Arsenal but made just two Premier League starts. 1 DANNY WELBECK Was at Arsenal's training ground with the England squad when he made his move from Manchester United. Unfortunately for Welbeck, his time at the club was ruined by serious knee and ankle injuries. 6 LUCAS PEREZ 9 A prime contender for Arsenal's worst big-money signing, the Spaniard cost a hefty £17m from Deportivo La Coruna. Despite a Champions League hat-trick at Basel, Perez failed to establish himself and only made two Premier League starts. 5 ALEXANDRE LACAZETTE In Wenger's last season, the board allowed the manager to sign Lacazette for £52m . The Frenchman's goals-per-game record was quite good, especially as the Gunners were struggling, but he was still a frustrating player. 7 PIERRE-EMERICK AUBAMEYANG 9 The Gabonese forward will be remembered fondly for scoring twice in the FA Cup final against Chelsea in 2020. Yet at times Auba seemed more interested in his cars, and his attitude frustrated Arteta. 8 GABRIEL JESUS Joined in 2022 for a hefty £45m from Manchester City — but the Brazilian's goals tally is mediocre. He has spent a fair amount of time on the subs bench and in the physio room. 6 KAI HAVERTZ Yet another to arrive from Chelsea, this time for £65m. The German has still to make an explosive impact but he could be helped by Gyokeres' arrival. 7 EDDIE NKETIAH 9 Fans were desperate for the home-grown favourite to succeed up front. Had plenty of chances but was sold to Crystal Palace in 2024. 6
