Anwar hails Asean diplomacy as Cambodia, Thailand agree ceasefire after Malaysia meet
In remarks following the agreement reached yesterday in Putrajaya, Anwar also said the two countries' collective endorsement underscores a shared commitment to stability in Southeast Asia.
The prime minister said Malaysia — currently the Asean chair — not only led, but also played a key role as facilitator, host, and witness to the success of this historic understanding.
'I extend my appreciation to regional partners and major powers who also supported this peace effort,' he said.
'Asean remains united and principled. Let us continue to pray for a peaceful, stable, and prosperous region for our shared future.'
Thailand and Cambodia agreed to an immediate ceasefire effective from midnight on July 28, ending a deadly border dispute that has claimed dozens of lives over five days of clashes.
A meeting between military commanders from both nations is scheduled to take place on Tuesday as a vital first step toward de-escalation and restoration of peace.
Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet thanked Anwar for hosting the negotiations that led to the 'brilliant result' of the ceasefire, while US Secretary of State Marco Rubio also applauded the Malaysian leader for driving the peace talks.

In a statement issued Thursday, the ministers commended Malaysia's role in facilitating a bilateral dialogue that led to a ceasefire between Cambodia and Thailand. 'We encourage Cambodia and Thailand to resolve the issue amicably in accordance with international law, and consistent with the principles enshrined in the United Nations (UN) Charter, ASEAN Charter, Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia, and in the spirit of ASEAN family, unity and good neighbourliness. 'We hope that the ceasefire agreed by both sides will be fully implemented in good faith. The ministers also voiced their support for Malaysia's readiness to coordinate an observer team comprising ASEAN Member States to independently verify and monitor the implementation of the ceasefire. The ASEAN Foreign Ministers also acknowledged the role of the United States (US) in co-organising the Special Meeting, while noting the active participation of China in promoting a peaceful resolution to the ongoing situation. Following the meeting, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thailand's Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai agreed to implement an immediate ceasefire to ease tensions in the disputed border area.

Batik gaffe: PAS MP apologises to PM, says not defending a mistake
SHAH ALAM: PAS' Kuala Terengganu MP Datuk Ahmad Amzad Hashim has apologised to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim after claiming that the batik shirt worn by the premier while presenting the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) on Thursday (July 31) had an Indonesian design, Sinar Harian reports. The Malay language daily said that Ahmad Amzad had, in a Facebook post, acknowledged his mistake and removed his earlier post after receiving feedback from several batil entrepreneurs, including the producer of the batik shirt worn by Anwar. "The owner of Bujins Batik clarified that it was their product. I will not defend my mistake and was only made aware of it just now by my officer because I was in transit from Kuala Lumpur back to Kuala Terengganu and did not follow the development of that post. "That was indeed my fault and I need to correct it immediately," he said. Earlier, Ahmad Amzad had posted a message advising the Prime Minister to be careful in choosing appropriate attire during the 13MP presentation in the Dewan Rakyat. In that post, he also questioned Anwar's decision to wear a batik shirt with an Indonesian design, arguing that the attire on Thursday was meant to highlight the uniqueness of Malaysian batik as a heritage and national identity before deleting his statement. Ahmad Amzad expressed his gratitude to all parties who provided feedback and clarified that his intention was simply to offer a perspective as a concerned representative for the local batik industry. "To the Prime Minister, I apologise. My intention was merely to provide a viewpoint because, as a representative from Terengganu who frequently interacts with many Malaysian batik entrepreneurs, one of the issues often raised is the fate of the Malaysian batik industry. "I apologise once again. Respectfully," he said.
