Kuwait City: Ambassador of India to Kuwait, Adarsh Swaika, called upon the Deputy Prime Minister and the Minister of Interior of Kuwait, Fahad Yousef Saud Al-Sabah and held discussions on diaspora and bilateral development, the Embassy of India in Kuwait shared on Thursday.
In a post on X, the Embassy of India in Kuwait noted that Ambassador Adarsh Swaika apprised the Deputy PM of important issues of bilateral development between India and Kuwait.
Ambassador Swaika also conveyed matters concerning the welfare of the Indian diaspora in Kuwait during the meeting.
The Embassy wrote on X, "Amb @AdarshSwaika1 called on the Dy PM & Minister of Interior H.E Sheikh Fahad Yousef Saud Al-Sabah. Ambassador apprised him of important bilateral developments and conveyed matters concerning welfare of Indian Diaspora in Kuwait".
Earlier on Wednesday, Ambassador Swaika had also met Aziz Al-Dehani, Assistant Foreign Minister for Consular Affairs.
The Indian Embassy noted that discussions were held on various bilateral consular and labour matters.
Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Puri met with Tareq Sulaiman Al-Roumi, Kuwait's Minister of Oil and Chairman of the Kuwait Petroleum Corporation, during his participation at the 9th OPEC International Seminar held in Vienna.
Kuwait currently ranks as the 6th largest source of crude oil, the 4th most significant source of LPG, and stands as India's 8th largest hydrocarbon trade partner.
The series of high-level interactions comes after the all-party delegation led by BJP MP Baijayant Panda had participated in a series of events as a part of India's diplomatic outreach on Operation Sindoor.
Former Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla, part of India's multi-party delegation to Kuwait, described the group's engagements as wide-ranging and impactful.
"Kuwait had very strongly condemned the attack in Pahalgam. Kuwait has a very strong position when it comes to terrorism. India and Kuwait also have a joint working group on Security and counter-terrorism... Kuwait is also an influential member of the Gulf Cooperation on Terrorist Financing, and it also has significant financial and economic leverage on Pakistan. The fact that any acts of terrorism would lead to a strong response from India and therefore, will have an impact on the region and beyond is something that Kuwaiti interlocutors have internalised and taken note of", he had observed.
Bilateral ties between the two countries see frequent Foreign Office Consulatations and a Joint Ministerial Commission. MEA highlighted that Kuwait remains a reliable supplier of crude oil and LPG energy needs of India.
India and Kuwait have friendly ties which have stood the test of times. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), previously underscored that the Indian community with a strength of approx. 1 million is the largest expatriate community in Kuwait and is regarded as the community of first preference among the expatriate communities.

Piyush Goyal urges Indian industry to leverage FTAs for global impact

Mumbai: Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal on Saturday interacted with the managing committee and senior members of ASSOCHAM in Mumbai where he encouraged business to look for the opportunities that India's recent Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) have opened up. He also laid thrust on ensuring qualities of products to enhance India's global competitiveness. "Had an excellent interaction with the Managing Committee and Senior Members of @ASSOCHAM4India in Mumbai. Speaking at the session on 'Creating Impact Globally - Towards a Viksit Bharat', I urged industry to tap the vast global opportunities that India's recent FTAs have opened up. Also emphasised on the importance of quality in further enhancing our global competitiveness," the union minister posted on the social media platform 'X'. Addressing the session, Piyush Goyal said that if India gets a good trade deal, the country will go ahead with it. "If not, we won't," the Minister stated. "India always keeps its interests first," he added. Talking to reporters after the event, the Minister said he has already mentioned that the government will not negotiate through media but in the negotiating room. "Talks are ongoing, and once the team is back, we will get feedback on the response and the progress." He also emphasised the importance of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), focusing on research, innovation, quality, and scaling up to compete globally. The Minister urged MSME stakeholders to actively inform the government about non-tariff barriers that are affecting their businesses. Speaking to an industry player, Goyal stated that the government will address the industry's concerns and work towards resolving them only if these are communicated. Reflecting on the broader economic framework, the Minister compared the current banking system with that under the previous UPA government. He noted that the PM Modi-led administration had successfully restructured the banking sector. Goyal alleged that during the UPA regime, the banking sector collapsed under rising NPAs. "We have restructured it in a transparent manner. Today, the banking system is robust and performing well," the Union Minister added.

EU Envoy to India clarifies sanctions on Russia, says no disruption to global supply, purchases

New Delhi: The European Union's recent sanctions on Russian oil, energy, banking and defence industries are aimed at degrading Moscow's "war economy" while preserving global oil market stability, said Ambassador of the Delegation of the European Union to India Herve Delphin on Saturday. Delphin, in a post on X, outlined the EU's sanctions policy against Russia, which also targeted a refinery in India, emphasising that it does not prevent countries from purchasing Russian oil and thus avoiding disruptions to global supply. The refinery in India is under Rosneft, a leader in the Russian refining industry, as one of its main shareholders. As per the EU Envoy, the 18th sanctions package reduces the price cap on Russian oil from USD 60 to USD 47.6 per barrel and seeks to further curb revenues fuelling Russia's military efforts in Ukraine. "On EU sanctions policy on Russian oil: Doesn't prevent anyone from buying oil from Russia --> so as not to disrupt the global oil market supply. Capping on Russian oil export prices --> a way of reducing the amount of revenues that feed/ are channeled into the Russian war economy. 18th package reduces the capping from USD 60 barrel to USD 47.6 barrel --> to reduce even further revenues Russia draws from oil export sales," Delphin stated. The EU Envoys' clarification on the sanctions followed India's response to the decision, in which New Delhi stated that it does not subscribe to any unilateral sanctions measures while emphasising the importance of avoiding double standards, especially in the domain of energy trade. As per Delphin, the new cap, adjustable based on market reference prices, imposes a discount on Russian oil, benefiting buyers with stronger bargaining positions. The EU has also banned third-country operators from exporting refined oil products made from Russian crude to the European market, closing a loophole that indirectly boosted Russian revenues. The EU Envoy also noted that European citizens support this measure, despite potential higher import costs from alternative suppliers. "The capping can fluctuate according to oil market reference price --> preserves elasticity of oil market for buyers. The capping amounts to imposing a discount on Russian oil --> benefit for the buyer who has a better bargaining position. Ban on export by third country operators to Europe of refined oil products made from Russian crude oil --> closing loophole to avoid European companies buy such products and indirectly add to Russian oil revenues. European citizens want this, even if it may result in higher import cost by buying from other suppliers," the post added. Additionally, the EU has sanctioned 450 shadow fleet oil tanker ships, targeting Russia's attempts to circumvent sanctions through illicit transport networks, while highlighting the impact that the previously imposed sanctions have had in depriving Russia of EUR 450 billion, resources that would have otherwise supported its military efforts in Ukraine. "Sanctions on shadow fleet oil tanker ships (port call and provision of services) --> closing a loophole that Russia uses to circumvent this sanction. 450 sanctioned shadow fleet ships by the EU. EU conducts its sanctions policy diligently & responsibly," he noted in his post. With oil constituting one-third of Russia's revenues and 40 per cent of its public spending allocated to military efforts--equivalent to 6 per cent to 7 per cent of its GDP--the EU has reduced its dependency on Russian oil by 90 per cent, Delphin affirmed, while noting that the EU member states aim to eliminate all Russian energy imports by 2026-2027 to further starve Russia's "war economy". "Sanctions aim at degrading the Russian war economy: 40% of Russian public spending allocated to finance the military effort -- equivalent to 6 to 7% of the Russian GDP. Impact of imposed sanctions --> took away from Russia 450 billion euros which otherwise it would have had its disposal for the war. Oil represents 1/3 of total Russian revenues --> EU has already reduced its own dependency on Russian oil by 90%. EU Member States will cut off all Russian energy import completely by 2026 & 2027 to stop feeding revenues in Russian war economy," the post read. Addressing Russia's aggression in Ukraine, Delphin condemned it as "illegal" and a "direct security threat" to the EU, its citizens, and territory. "Deliberate Russian aggression on Ukraine is illegal. It causes massive suffering by targeting civilians," he stated, reiterating the EU's stance: "Mr Putin must stop this war; stop the carnage and engage in earnest in peace talks."

Air India crash: US body says media reports 'premature'

The United States National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) said on Friday that media reports on the reasons behind the Air India Boeing Dreamliner crash which killed 270 were speculative and premature. India's Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB), which is investigating the accident, had released a preliminary report last week which raised questions about the engine fuel cutoff switches. Since the report came out, there have been several media reports speculating over the cause of the crash in Indian and Western media, pointing to a possible pilot error. The report itself has been condemned for not providing enough information. What did the US agency say about the Air India crash report? The NTSB is an investigative agency that investigates civil transportation accidents. "Recent media reports on the Air India 171 crash are premature and speculative. India's Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau just released its preliminary report. Investigations of this magnitude take time," NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy said in a statement shared on X. According to the AAIB report, in the blackbox voice recording , "one of the pilots is heard asking the other why did he cutoff," and the other pilot "responded that he did not do so." First officer Clive Kunder was believed to be flying the plane while Captain Sumeet Sabharwal was monitoring, hence it has been assumed that his hands were free to toggle with the fuel switch. The switches were restored 10 seconds later but the plane crashed, having already lost thrust. The report did not clarify what caused the engine fuel to cut off. How has media reported on the cause of the crash? Some media reports and aviation experts have speculated that Sabharwal could have been suicidal and intentionally switched off the fuel. The AAIB had condemned western media reports for being "irresponsible" and drawing conclusions "through selective and unverified reporting," Times of India reported. The Federation of Indian Pilots (FIP) sent legal notices to the Wall Street Journal and Reuters, saying the findings were "neither substantiated by the official investigation nor endorsed by any competent authority," newspaper The New Indian Express said. India's Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu urged the press and people not to "jump to conclusions" and wait for the final report.
