Jeff Bezos' Alleged 'Wedding Gift' to Lauren Sánchez Could Cost Him Billions

Yahoo18 hours ago
Jeff Bezos is allegedly considering a multi-billion-dollar investment as a gift to his new wife, Lauren Sánchez.
Per the Daily Mail, staff at Condé Nast are convinced that Bezos is making moves to buy the media conglomerate for Sánchez, who is a former journalist. The outlet reports that this might explain why Sánchez got a spread in Vogue, one of Condé Nast's most recognizable brands, on the couple's June 27 wedding day.

Jeff Bezos & Lauren Sanchez Are Reportedly 'Livid' About One Star's Ruthless Criticism of Their Wedding
'The rumour that Jeff is going to buy Condé Nast is all anyone's talking about in the fashion industry and inside Vogue,' a source told the Daily Mail. 'Lauren Sánchez is such an unlikely cover star, and the word is that she landed the July issue partly because the Newhouse family want to butter up Bezos.'
The Newhouse family has owned Condé Nast since 1959. The source also points to a number of layoffs that have happened at Condé Nast in recent months noting, 'In New York, they're slimming down the business which is exactly what companies do before a sale.'
Per The Hollywood Reporter, Condé Nast is valued at $5 billion, so Bezos will have to fork out a hefty sum to secure the sale.
While a source close to Bezos called the speculation 'totally untrue,' the Daily Mail's source insists that former Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour is taking charge of the sale.
'Anna is said to be the one brokering the deal so that's why Lauren was put on the cover,' said the source of the longtime exec who announced her departure from the role in June. Wintour will remain on as the magazine's global editorial director and Condé Nast's chief content officer.
'Anna has equity in the business so has a lot to gain from a sale,' the source adds.
In 2013, Bezos bought The Washington Post for $250 million in cash so we know he's not averse to stepping into media.
Another source said, 'He's one of the very few people with deep enough pockets. And Lauren is no airhead. She's a sharp cookie. There have been conversations.'
However, with no substantial signs of the sale yet, we can likely assume that Bezos is too caught up in post-wedding bliss to broker a deal. He and Sánchez have been honeymooning with their children in Europe after their star-studded Venice wedding.Best of SheKnows

D.C. hotel housekeepers will receive $215,000 in unpaid overtime settlement

Two related D.C.-area cleaning companies must pay $290,000 to resolve allegations that they sometimes failed to provide full overtime pay to hundreds of housekeepers since 2021, D.C. Attorney General Brian Schwalb said Tuesday. In a statement, Schwalb's office said it launched an investigation into the companies Cuzco Facilities Services LLC and Mardone Inc., which does business as J&B Cleaning Services, after receiving a tip about suspected wage theft from the union that represents the region's hotel workers, Unite Here Local 25. The two cleaning companies are legally considered to be a single employer because they have common ownership and management, Schwalb's office said.
