Books Kinokuniya to open new outlet at Raffles City in August
In a Facebook post on Apr 21, the bookstore chain announced the new store, which will span 3,433 sq ft on the third floor of the mall.
Tan Kay Ngee, 68, award-winning principal architect of Kay Ngee Tan Architects, who designed the first Books Kinokuniya's flagship store at Ngee Ann City in 1999, told The Straits Times: 'The new Kinokuniya store is conceived as a quiet discovery – designed not to shout, but to invite.'
It will feature a Blue Room at the heart of the shop. 'It is a serene space dedicated to literature which evokes a quieter, more contemplative mood for immersive reading experiences.'
The space will reuse the iconic blue shelves from the flagship store, which is currently being reorganised.
In February, it was announced that the bookshop's 38,000 sq ft space at Ngee Ann City would be reduced. A spokesperson for Books Kinokuniya said that despite the outlet's smaller footprint, 'our range of titles remains intact and we intend to expand and showcase a more varied merchandise mix'.

The main entrance of the flagship store reopened on Apr 7, although the rest of the store is still undergoing 'significant changes'.
The spokesperson also confirmed that there would be no staff layoffs or manpower changes at the Takashimaya outlet.
The bookshop chain closed its outlets at Jem mall in Jurong in May 2022 and at Liang Court mall in Clarke Quay in Apr 2019. The closures reflect a shrinking books retail scene in recent years as various brands such as Times and Epigram Books closed physical outlets, squeezed by high rentals and thin profits.
When asked about Books Kinokuniya's future plans in Singapore, the spokesperson said: 'We would consider opening a new store if the right venue and price come together.' THE STRAITS TIMES

KTM plans new passenger rail service in Johor Bahru to manage higher footfall expected from RTS
Currently exclusive for freight service, Pasir Gudang KTM station is slated to run passenger service to Kempas Baru KTM station connecting to JB Sentral. PASIR GUDANG, Johor – Malaysia's state railway firm is set to start a new passenger service line that will help disperse the flood of commuter traffic expected from the soon-to-be-completed Johor Bahru–Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link. With the RTS scheduled to launch December 2026, Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTM) said it will expand its 40-km Kempas Baru to Pasir Gudang (KBPG) line that currently serves only freight operations to include passenger services by 2026. This will start with the establishment of two passenger stations. 'This will be the starting point for the Komuter Selatan (Southern Commuter train service), aligned with the completion of the RTS to help disperse passengers along the north-south travel corridor,' KTM chief executive officer Mohd Rani Hisham Samsudin told The Straits Times on July 22. Once up, the cross-border RTS project, which can ferry an expected peak capacity of up to 10,000 passengers per hour per direction between Singapore's Woodlands North MRT and Bukit Chagar station in Johor Bahru, will lead to a significant increase in footfall in the area. And while an earlier announcement said that a driverless tram-bus network, also known as an elevated autonomous rapid transit (ART) system, would be used to disperse commuter traffic in the Bukit Chagar area, there is no confirmation on its expected date. The expansion of the KBPG line to include passenger services will tackle that issue. The first phase will introduce commuter stops at Kempas Baru and Pasir Gudang along the single-track line that has for decades has been used to ship cargo – mostly cocoa and steel ingots – headed for Johor Port. The second phase will see more proposed passenger stations along the KBPG line. In future, commuters alighting at the upcoming Bukit Chagar RTS station will be able to connect to Johor Bahru Sentral (JB Sentral) via a 400m covered walkway, where they can then board passenger trains at the KTM Kempas Baru Station, and travel to places like Kulai and Kluang in the southern state. And come December 2025, there will be another transport route linking up to JB Sentral. An Electric Train Service (ETS) is expected to begin operations there, completing the West Coast electrified rail route – operating at medium speeds around 140 km/h – from its northern terminus in Padang Besar to the southern terminus at JB Sentral, Transport Minister Anthony Loke told ST on July 29. This will complement the planned ART system by dispersing commuter traffic to the Iskandar Puteri, Tebrau and Skudai regions. The final route and stations for the ART will be known by August 2025, as announced by Johor transport executive councillor Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh. ART is an elevated, driverless tram-bus network which runs on tracks across bridges and viaducts. Meanwhile, Railway Assets Corporation, which is in charge of upgrading the KBPG line while KTM operates the train service, told ST that details and costs of the new passenger stations are still being finalised. KTM's Datuk Rani, 63, said that infrastructure upgrade is necessary before passengers train sets can be put into operation on the KBPG line. 'We need to build halts and raised platforms for passengers to board without making them climb the train. Secondly, the existing single track requires a proper passing loop and upgraded signalling systems to allow cargo and passenger trains to cross at the same time,' he said, adding that because the track is non-electrified, diesel trains will be deployed for the new passenger service. Halts are small train stops, which do not provide the full range of services offered at train stations. And a passing loop is a portion of single track line that briefly splits into two or more tracks to allow trains going in opposite directions to pass safely. KTM chief executive officer Mohd Rani Hisham Samsudin said that infrastructure upgrade is necessary before passengers train sets can be put into operation for the KBPG line. ST PHOTO: LU WEI HOONG Datuk Rani said the plan is for the diesel-powered passenger trains to operate at 20- to 30-minute intervals during the morning and afternoon peak hours. This service could begin operating by year-end once the tracks and stations are upgraded or completed. In the long run, he said the upcoming completion of the electrified double track along the Johor KTM stretch could pave the way for yet another passenger service, the electrified Komuter Selatan service, to operate between Paloh – a small town located about 130 km north from Johor Bahru – and JB Sentral, alongside the higher-speed ETS. From October 2024 to May 2025, the KBPG line underwent extensive upgrading works, including track replacement and a new signalling and safety system. This caused an extended closure and disruption of cargo transfers between Tanjung Pelepas Port in western Johor and Pasir Gudang Port in eastern Johor. However, senior KTM locomotive driver Mohd Kamal Asmawi said the temporary closure was worthwhile to optimise train speed. 'It has helped significantly reduce the risk of derailment. We can now operate trains at up to 80kmh, compared to just 30kmh before,' said Mr Kamal, who has been serving on the KBPG line since 2020.

New vehicular bridge connecting Punggol Central and Seletar Link to open on Aug 3

SINGAPORE - Motorists living in Punggol West will have another access to Tampines Expressway (TPE) when a new six-lane vehicular bridge connecting Punggol Central and Seletar Link opens on Aug 3. This alternative route to enter and exit Punggol town will help relieve traffic pressure on existing major arterial roads like Punggol Way and Punggol Road, which feed into the TPE. The new bridge, located near Yusof Ishak Secondary School, comes with upgraded road junctions and barrier-free paths that link to the Punggol Park Connector, said Punggol GRC MP Sun Xueling in a Facebook post on July 31. It will form part of a new road called Seletar South Link. Ms Sun, who is Senior Minister of State for Transport and National Development, said in earlier social media posts that the bridge spanning the Sungei Punggol river will have cycling paths on both sides. 'Punggol residents can benefit from more transport options in and out of the town,' Ms Sun told The Straits Times on Aug 1. 'Punggol is a town which is still growing, and we have many young families who drive and use public transport to go to work, visit family and friends and manage household needs,' she added. During peak hours, motorists can get stuck in traffic for five to 10 minutes at these exits before they can get onto the expressway, she noted. In January 2024, the Land Transport Authority opened the new Seletar Link Flyover , which connects Seletar Link to the TPE. This was to cater to an expected increase in traffic in parts of Punggol due to new developments there. The hope was that the flyover would improve traffic conditions, especially at the TPE exit near Punggol Way, with motorists having the option to use Punggol North Avenue and Seletar Link to get to the TPE instead. Ms Sun noted that there is land in the west of Punggol that has been set aside for future Build-To-Order flats. Hence, the extension of Punggol Central and the new vehicular bridge connecting to Seletar Link will meet the needs of both current and future Punggol residents, she said. According to the Urban Redevelopment Authority's 2025 draft masterplan , two plots of land next to Sungei Punggol on either side of Punggol Central road are zoned for residential use. Construction of the road extension and other related civil engineering work began in December 2018, after a $31.8 million contract was awarded by the Housing Board to Guan Joo Construction. Ms Sun had said in January 2024 that the vehicular bridge would open in the second half of that year. But this was pushed back to the first half of 2025, then later to July, and now Aug 3. Ms Latashni Gobi Nathan, who lives in Northshore Crescent, said traffic from her home to the TPE is not so bad because she and her husband can avoid Punggol Way and use Seletar Link instead. But she said the problem is when they need to get to Sengkang, where her in-laws live. A 10-minute drive can take 20 minutes when congestion hits. 'More exits and entries will help a lot,' added the 35-year-old, who works in communications. Punggol West resident Eddie Sia, 35, held a similar view. 'It used to be very bad, especially in the morning. But when Seletar North Link opened, the congestion was reduced,' the interior designer said. He added: 'Once Seletar South Link is open, it will definitely improve the flow of traffic.'

Sheng Siong to open first store in Orchard by end August

SINGAPORE - Supermarket operator Sheng Siong is set to open its first store in the Orchard Road area at The Cathay shopping mall. A spokesperson for the supermarket told The Straits Times that the 6,500 sq ft store is expected to open by the end of August. The spokesperson added: 'Sheng Siong previously operated a store in the Tekka area, and over the years, customers have expressed their hope for Sheng Siong to have a presence in the central area. 'The Cathay is surrounded by residential developments, and we believe it is a convenient spot for daily grocery needs.' Renovation works for the store were first spotted in May, when a Reddit user posted photos of the ongoing construction at Basement 1 of the mall. According to Sheng Siong's website, the supermarket currently has 82 outlets across the country, with the majority located in the North-east.
