Floating book fair to make 23-day stop in Labuan next month
The 23-day stay is part of the vessel's ongoing South-East Asia voyage, following its recent stop in Magong, Taiwan, and ahead of its journey to Puerto Princesa in the Philippines.
MV Doulos Hope, operated by GBA Ships, is widely known for hosting one of the world's largest travelling book fairs at sea.
Onboard, visitors can browse thousands of titles ranging from children's publications to academic works and world literature, all offered at affordable prices, reported Bernama.
The unique attraction aims to promote literacy, education and cross-cultural understanding through its global tour.
Labuan Port operator Megah Port Management Sdn Bhd confirmed the vessel's arrival, with its managing director Datuk Seri Patrick Tiong saying that the extended port call was expected to bring positive economic spillovers to the island.
Due to limited capacity, visitors are encouraged to book online for entry slots, while safety protocols will be enforced to manage crowd flow.
Other than Labuan, MV Doulos Hope will also be docking in Kota Kinabalu from Aug 20 to Sept 10.
These will be the only Malaysian stops for the vessel this year.

FGV 2025 Festival To Empower Felda Settlers On Global Stage
KUALA LUMPUR, July 31 (Bernama) -- Festival FGV 2025, held in conjunction with the Federal Land Development Authority (Felda) Settlers' Day celebration, serves as a platform to empower and showcase the potential of the settler community at the global level. Felda chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek said the inaugural festival demonstrated the strong cooperation between Felda and FGV Holdings Berhad (FGV), which could pave the way forward for both entities. 'With the strength of both, Felda and FGV will stride onto the global stage,' he told reporters after launching Festival FGV 2025 here today, which was also attended by FGV chairman Tan Sri Rastam Mohd Isa and FGV group chief executive officer Fakhrunniam Othman. Ahmad Shabery said the five-day festival, which began yesterday, is held under the Mega 3D Carnival (MK3D), in collaboration with the Ministry of Rural and Regional Development (KKDW), the Ministry of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives (KUSKOP), and Felda. Meanwhile, Fakhrunniam said FGV's participation in MK3D reflected the company's continued commitment to empowering Felda settlers, supporting the rural development agenda, and highlighting the potential of Malaysia's palm oil industry. 'Festival FGV 2025 is very close to our hearts as it gathers the efforts, spirit and outstanding contributions of settlers and smallholders who are the backbone of FGV, having contributed more than 70 per cent of the fresh fruit bunches supplied to FGV's mills. 'This event is not only a way for us to show appreciation, but also a platform to highlight FGV's major role in the national palm oil industry, promoting the benefits and diversity of palm-based products,' he said. During the event, FGV also launched the world's first mobile game application based on sustainable agricommodities, called FGV Edugames, which focuses on palm agriculture as well as environment, social and governance (ESG) impact in an interactive approach. Titles such as Weevil Hero, Ladang Defence, and Waste to Wealth under FGV Edugames introduce elements of sustainability, biodiversity and circular economy using a more creative learning method and can be downloaded from the App Store and Google Play.

Lithuanian Prime Minister Paluckas Steps Down
RIGA (Latvia), July 31 (Bernama-dpa) - Lithuanian Prime Minister Gintautas Paluckas said on Thursday he would step down amid growing pressure arising from allegations of conflicts of interest and nepotism, reported German Press Agency (dpa). "I have decided to resign from the office of prime minister," Paluckas announced in a statement, adding that he would submit his resignation to President Gitanas Nausėda shortly. Paluckas has increasingly come under fire due to allegations of dubious business dealings and faced calls for his resignation, including from one of the two coalition partners in his centre-left government. bootstrap slideshow Investigations are ongoing into past and present business dealings involving the 45-year-old, who, up until now, denied any conflicts of interest and dismissed the allegations as deliberate attacks by political opponents. Lithuanian media reported on Thursday that investigators had searched a company owned by Paluckas' sister-in-law. The company is alleged to have used European Union (EU) subsidies to purchase electric batteries from a company which is 49 per cent owned by Paluckas during his term as prime minister. In his statement, Paluckas said that he did not believe he had committed any serious wrongdoing during his term in office. However, he did not want to make the government and its work hostage to "scandals," he said. Paluckas, who also resigned as leader of the Social Democrats, had been prime minister of Lithuania since November 2024. Nausėda described his resignation as "the right decision."
