Notorious Rotherham grooming gang rapist could be FREED early for ‘good behaviour' after bid to move from jail
Basharat Hussain was part of a grooming gang jailed in 2017 for the "systematic" sexual abuse of teenage girls in the town - including brave Sammy Woodhouse, whose evidence first helped expose the scandal.

Basharat was put behind bars for 25 years after he was found guilty of 15 charges including rape and abduction. He was also convicted of an additional indecent assault and received a further seven-year sentence, to run concurrently.
But now, Basharat is being considered for a move to an open prison, in a move Sammy has blasted as "disgusting".
The Sun understands that Basharat will be eligible to be moved into open conditions because he is three years away from his conditional release date. With time spent on remand, Basharat will have served over 50 percent of his sentence in three years - making him eligible for release.
A Prison Service spokesperson said: 'Offenders must pass thorough risk assessments before they can be moved to an open prison and if they break the rules they will be immediately returned to closed conditions.'

Prisoners must pass a three-step step good behaviour test before the transfer is approved - including proving they are at low risk of absconding, that they have reduced their risk of harming members of the public and can prove they have a "wholly persuasive case" for the move.
Sick Basharat was jailed alongside his brothers Arshid "Mad Ash" Hussain and Banaras "Bono" Hussain in 2017 in a case that made British history for handing out the highest ever sentences for child sexual exploitation.
The three men were part of a vile gang that groomed and raped children for nearly 20 years.
However Banaras Hussain was also released early back in December 2025, after serving only nine years of a 19 year sentence.

Victim turned-campaigner Sammy, who has a son born from being raped by Arshid age 15 and gave evidence against all three men - hit out at the latest move.
"I received a message from a victim liaison officer asking for my views on Bash being moved to an open prison, that's how I found out about it," she told The Sun.
"It's absolutely insane - he's only served eight years of a 25 year sentence. He should serve his whole sentence or what's the point of giving it out?
"I met Bash before his brother Ash - my main abuser - and he did kiss me and try to groom me but I ran off. But he abused me friends.
"So even though there was no charges against Bash for me, I was still cross examined by his barrister. I gave perpetrator names, victims' names, evidence, everything, to the police about all of them.
"The thing with Bash is that before the trial he fled to Pakistan and tried to force one of the main witnesses against him to go with him. They had to force him to return for the trial.
'DANGEROUS MEN'
"While I was being exploited, Ash took me to this flat and told me that Bash and another man had killed someone there by giving them clear cut heroin - and he went into detail and showed me where everything happened. Now he might have just been making it up to scare me, or he might have told the truth. I told police everything so they could check if any bodies had been found there, but they told me they weren't even looking into it.
"It's disgusting - these are dangerous men and we've all been let down time and time again.
"I'm so p****d off with the whole thing - when all this went to trial they had over a hundred charges between the three brothers.
"But so many charges were taken off because they said there were so many offences and all I got told is 'There's too many charges - but it doesn't matter because they are all going to be in prison for a long time'.
'WHAT WAS IT ALL FOR?'
"So then at the end of the trial I was thinking, 'Well it's ok, they've pretty much been put away for life or a very long time' only to be told now he might be getting out soon, it makes me think 'What was it all for?'
"Obviously what came from that trial, and from me exposing the grooming gangs in Rotherham, it changed the whole country, so that keeps me positive about it, but if this was an ordinary case involving just me and they were now getting out, if I could go back in time I wouldn't have done it - I wouldn't have given evidence against them. It wouldn't have been worth it."

On the government's websites Category D or open prisons, where Basharat is likely to be moved, are described as having "minimal security and allow eligible prisoners to spend most of their day away from the prison on licence to carry out work, education or for other resettlement purposes",
Sammy, who has received death threats over her involvement in the case, which she has reported to police, says she feels "unsafe" knowing Basharat will likely be allowed in and out of open prison.
"I won't get told which open prison he will be moved to and I won't be told where he is living when he's out, but I have to tell them where I am," Sammy, who first reported about Basharat's prison move on her X account, said.
It just feels like the entire system protects rapists rather than us.
Sammy Woodhouse
"It was the same when Bono [Banneras] got released before Christmas I had to give over my details because they aren't allowed to contact me or my family - but I'm not allowed to know any of theirs. I had to tell them my grandchildren's names - it felt like a breach of my privacy.

"When I asked what prison they are in, they say 'We can't tell you because of data protection, when I asked where Bono was going to be living 'We can't tell you', whatever I ask it's the same 'We can't tell you'. It just feels like the entire system protects rapists rather than us."
Sammy, who was groomed from the age of 14, has been campaigning against grooming for years and is currently fighting for children born of rape to be considered victims of crime in the eyes of the law.
She says she has recently had family members of her abuser contacting her family for pictures of her grandson.
"I recently spoke to a solicitor because his family has been contacting members of my family, and he told me that if they went to court and sought a contact order they could gain access to see my grandchild," she said.

"People might think, 'That would never happen, they wouldn't let the family of her rapist see her grandchild' but it could happen unless the law is changed properly."
GROOMING TRIAL
Sammy's main abuser Arshid, of Goole, was jailed for 35 years after being convicted of 23 of the 28 charges he faced, including indecent assault, rape, abduction, false imprisonment and making threats to kill.
Banaras pleaded guilty before the trial to 10 charges, including two counts of rape and six of indecent assault and received a lesser sentence of 19 years.
A month-long trial at Sheffield Crown Court heard how the men "sexualised" their victims and in some cases subjected them to acts of a "degrading and violent nature".

Known around the South Yorkshire town by their nicknames of Mad Ash, Bash and Bono - the three brothers were drug dealers who ruled the roost using violence and fear, the court heard.
The grooming took place in houses, lock-up garages, churchyards and public spaces across the town, including Clifton Park.
The victims were forced to perform sex acts, often on several men at a time, and also forced to store guns and drugs for the gang.

Their uncle Qurban Ali was also found guilty of conspiracy to rape and jailed for 10 years.

Back in 2015, Basharat skipped bail and fled to Pakistan after being arrested on a number of offences.
A 30-year-old woman - who said Basharat left her fearing for her life on one occasion after threatening to shoot her - says she was driven to an airport and expected to board a flight, but could not go through with it.
She claims Hussain had trapped her in a physically, psychologically and sexually abusive relationship from the age of 15, during which he made several threats to kill her.
She told police in an interview: 'I never wanted to go to Pakistan. His cousin drove me to the airport but when I got there I couldn't do it.

"I just couldn't go because I knew what my life would be, there.'
The woman, who cannot be named, also claims 'controlling' Hussain told her how to dress and behave during years of terror.
He said he once locked her in a flat for two days after dragging her home from a night out in Barnsley with friends.
The woman says Hussain once even sent her a text message telling her 'point blank' that he was going to shoot her.

GROOMING SCANDAL
It comes after it was revealed that members of the same grooming gang who preyed on teenage girls got £611,204 in legal aid.
Details of the funding for the Rotherham monsters comes days after Labour went back on its abuse inquiry promises.
Seven men were jailed for a combined 101 years in 2018 for grooming and abusing five girls in the South Yorkshire town from 1998 to 2005.
Ringleader Mohammed Imran Ali Akhtar, 43, who was sentenced to 23 years in jail, got £143,696 in legal aid.

His total does not include costs for a separate trial last year in which he got a 12-year term for raping a girl of 13 after plying her with booze and drugs.
Labour's pathetic response to grooming gangs
By Tony Parsons
THIS Labour government never looked more pathetically gutless than in its response to the grooming gangs.
The systematic and nationwide sexual exploitation of vulnerable young white girls by organised gangs of largely Pakistani men is the greatest scandal of our time.
And Labour doesn't want to know. In January, the Government announced a £5million fund for five local inquiries into grooming gangs.
That was an obscenely inadequate response to mass child sex abuse.
These atrocities played out in scores of cities and towns for decades.
Councils that failed vulnerable children can't be allowed to investigate their own failures.
Now, that already derisory response has been watered down even further.
Forty-five minutes before the House of Commons broke for the Easter holidays, Jess Phillips of the Home Office told an almost empty chamber that the Government would now be taking a 'flexible' approach to local grooming gang inquiries.
At the discretion of the councils involved, that £5million fund can now be spent on other projects.
This is more than political cowardice. It stinks of a cover-up. The scandal of the grooming gangs screams out for a statutory inquiry where witnesses are made to give evidence.
This is exactly what we had with the Grenfell Tower fire inquiry, the Covid inquiry and the Post Office Horizon IT inquiry.
A formal investigation, conducted within a legal framework. Anything less is a cop-out. Anything less is running from the ugly truth.
Five other defendants, aged from 40 to 45 and jailed for between ten and 20 years, each received between £60,147 and £99,168 in legal aid.
The seventh, who cannot be named for legal reasons, had £90,849.
All bar one of the gang were convicted of rape — and one of them fell asleep in court as impact statements put forward by the victims were read out.

News of the gang's legal aid bill comes after the Government was accused of axing local child rape inquiries to appease Pakistani voters.
Former Equalities Commission chief Sir Trevor Phillips called ministers 'utterly shameful' for watering down a series of investigations.

A performer was mean at Glastonbury? Well, cry me a river and the sea
The backlash has been swift and predictable. The duo has had their US visas revoked, been dropped by their agents, lost festival bookings, and now prosecution is on the table. But forgive me, and anyone else, if I don't care a jot what Bob Vylan happened to say on a festival stage. Read more: Kneecap's crimes of terror? Waving a flag while Britain arms a genocide On Monday, the IDF killed 74 people. With 30 left dead from a bomb dropped on a seaside café, and 23 Palestinians shot down while seeking food. The number of children killed by the IDF is over the 50,000 mark, not counting those children who have been maimed, displaced, lost family, or experienced life-ruining trauma. Just try to imagine 50,000 dead children for a second, it is not some abstract number untied to our reality. Words said on the Glastonbury stage, regardless of how inflammatory they are, become hilariously insignificant in the face of those facts. Israel's siege on Gaza is a situation so morbid, so catastrophic, so filled with horrors beyond our comprehension that grasping onto distraction after distraction is the only way for them to save face on any of it. Whatever happens on the Glastonbury stage simply cannot measure up to the immeasurable cruelty and devastation suffered by the Palestinians. Believe it or not, a crowd chanting at a British music festival does not actually result in the death of an IDF soldier. Sticks and stones. A café that was damaged in an Israeli airstrike, killing more than 30 people near the port in Gaza City (Image: PA) Glastonbury, the BBC, and any other organisation caught in the crossfire of platforming the performance, must be naïve or stupid if they were hoping to avoid such an incident. Their assumptions seem to rest on other performers witnessing the axe fall on Kneecap (whose set at the festival was banned from BBC broadcast and is also being sought for possible prosecution), and in turn becoming scared to rock any boats. But given the amount of attention and publicity that came Kneecap's way as a result, is it any wonder that those performing felt compelled to up their ante even more and speak out against a genocide we are all observing in real time? It scarcely matters how many festival bookings are cancelled or what industry ties vanish into the night. Bob Vylan, a niche act with a strong anti-establishment ethos, can forego the luxuries of the mainstream music industry, where there is space to survive and grow, and complete their artistic goals. If they don't find themselves in jail for speaking their minds, then they really have nothing to lose. Modern-day artists sink or swim in an attention economy. By speaking out and causing a rupture, it has generated more popularity for themselves than their music and festival appearances could ever do on their own. It's clear that the duo knows all this and are not just merchants of provocation. 'We are not for the death of Jews, Arabs or any other race or group of people. We are for the dismantling of a violent military machine,' they said. They added that 'we, like those in the spotlight before us, are not the story. We are a distraction from the story, and whatever sanctions we receive will be a distraction'. Read more: The First Minister does not get to decide who plays TRNSMT festival Anyone who genuinely feels up in arms over a festival crowd chanting death towards a military carrying out the actions of a genocidal government should really take a step back and consider what transgressions are truly being breached. Because it is a mindset stuffed with meaningless decorum, where words are always taken at face value, and considered with great seriousness, while actions are obfuscated and swept under the rug. It is too easy a game to shift the conversation towards words and their efficacy rather than to consider the horrible reality unfolding on the ground and in front of our eyes. And it is a wonderful opportunity for the condemnation class. Politicians, the police, and the media love to fan the flames of these distractions in cheap, cynical ploys to be seen as proactive and righteous. If these types truly cared about the death toll of war, then their silence wouldn't be so deafening on the part of dead Palestinians. Maybe, just maybe, the reports of the IDF meeting its end following Bob Vylan's incitement were missed in the headlines. Or perhaps it is currently quite busy increasing the shelling of Gaza before a possible Trump-enforced ceasefire. Go figures.

Campaigners call for Wimbledon to end partnership with Range Rover
Anti-SUV campaigns have called for Wimbledon's organizers to stop shuttling tennis players and their entourages around London in Range Rovers and instead force the likes of Carlos Alcaraz, Novak Djokovic and Emma Raducanu to take the tube or a bus to travel to and from Centre Court. In an open letter sent to the All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC) today, the SUV Alliance demanded the immediate termination of its 10-year partnership with the British car maker and for it to encourage players to use 'London's world-renowned public transport network'. The letter says 'dangerous supersized' Range Rover hybrid SUVs deployed for tennis pros during the competition pose a 'huge danger for children, pedestrians and cyclists' in the capital. The group - in a separate statement - linked its concerns to the death of two eight-year old-girls, Selena Lau and Nuria Sajjad, who were killed outside their primary school in July 2023 just streets away from where the Championships were taking place at the time. Claire Freemantle, 48, crashed her Land Rover Defender into a crowd gathered for an end-of-term tea party at the nearby The Study Preparatory School, costing the lives of the two children and injuring 10 others. Medical examination had originally shown that she had suffered an epileptic seizure, resulting in the loss of control of the £80,000 vehicle and was not charged. However, Freemantle was rearrested in January on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, with a full investigation ongoing. The AELTC today responded to the letter, saying it requires larger vehicles to transport players, their entourages and their 'considerable luggage, kit bags, equipment, and racquets'. In the open letter addressed to the chair of the AELTC, Ms Deborah Jevans CBE, and Usama Al-Qassab, its marketing and commercial director, the campaign group said: 'We the undersigned are once again writing with dismay about the use of large SUVs as the official vehicle of the Wimbledon Championship, and the wider sponsorship of Wimbledon by Jaguar Land Rover as a leading manufacturer of these vehicles. 'Research has shown that heavy and large SUVs, like the Range Rover, are especially dangerous to children and people walking, wheeling and cycling. 'The use of these vehicles stands in direct contradiction to the sport-positive message of the Championship and ignores the concerns of Londoners.' It referenced a recent YouGov poll of 1,000 London adults (conducted between 5 and 7 April 2025) that found that 61 percent of parents in the capital are concerned that bigger cars make it more dangerous for children to walk and cycle. 'The probability of someone walking or cycling being killed increases by 44 percent when struck by an SUV compared to a small car, increasing further to 82 percent for children. This is due to the extra weight of an SUV and design features such as a taller bonnet,' the letter goes on. 'Many of us are parents and grandparents ourselves and feel the dilemma of wanting to encourage our children to walk, wheel, cycle and play outdoors - for health, mental health and their own autonomy - but at the same time fearing what could happen if our children share the streets with supersized SUVs.' The letter also raised issue with the local air pollution impact of AELTC using Range Rover Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) cars - which can be driven for around 75 miles in electric-only mode if the battery is fully charged - to transport players, their entourages and VIPs to and from the event. Organizers last year said the plug-in electric hybrid Range Rover, Range Rover Sport and Range Rover Velar vehicles used are charged at the club 'using 100 percent renewable electricity for near-silent running throughout The Championships'. However, the anti-SUV group said the vehicles will 'still emit particulate pollution from tyre wear, a leading source of pollution in London, which is made more severe by the Range Rover's weight'. The letter carries on: 'We must also be clear that this sponsorship is a form of advertising. The endorsement of large SUVs through partnerships like JLR and the AELTC drives an unnecessary aspirational culture for ever larger vehicles, at the expense of public space and safety for others. 'Excessive advertising and marketing has contributed to SUV ownership surging in the UK, from just 19 percent of sales 10 years ago to 62 percent of new car sales last year.' Instead of using Range Rover's supplied fleet of PHEV models, the campaign group suggested organizers make its 'large volumes of players and entourages around the tournament' instead use 'London's world-renowned public transport network' and 'shared transport and active travel options' to 'set an example and to deliver the Championship's fundamental sporting message'. It adds that 'where cars are necessary' the organizers should only supply small electric vehicles while considering alternative vehicle partners. In a further statement, Oliver Lord, head of the Clean Cities campaign group - which is part of the SUV Alliance - said: 'It's astonishing how Wimbledon insists on deploying large SUVs in our crowded capital despite excellent public transport and mounting evidence of the dangerous risk they pose to children. 'Why can't guests use public transport like most Londoners, at the very least, more normal sized cars that don't crowd us off the roads or endanger people walking and cycling?' Wimbledon organizers respond JLR (formerly Jaguar Land Rover and the parent group of Range Rover) was approached by This is Money to respond to the open letter, with a spokesperson telling us that it 'defers to the All England Lawn Tennis Club for comment'. This is Money also contacted the AELTC for comment. A spokesperson for the All England Club told us: 'JLR has been an important partner to The Championships since 2015, specifically with Range Rover this year. 'We have worked closely with them on the inclusion of a significant number of lower emission plug-in hybrid vehicles in our fleet which, are being charged on-site with 100 percent renewable electricity. 'Given the length of Grand Slam events – three weeks from the start of practice to the conclusion of the competition – players generally prefer to stay in residential rather than hotel accommodation during their time at Wimbledon. 'This is a great boost for the local area as players become part of the local community, but it does require a vehicle fleet to shuttle players between their accommodation and the grounds.' The spokesperson added: 'Players regularly travel with at least three guests, (typically coach, physio, or family members) and often arrive directly from other tournaments without going home for weeks or even months. ' We work closely with these elite athletes and their teams to guarantee appropriate space, including head room for them and their entourage, who also often have considerable luggage, kit bags, equipment, and racquets. 'Our objective is therefore to accommodate each player and their team within one vehicle versus the need for two separate vehicles. 'Our focus this year remains for as many journeys as possible to be delivered in EV mode. Trip distances all take place within a seven-mile radius, but the average trip length is less than five miles, meaning the majority can be delivered on the EV range of the hybrid Range Rover vehicles which we are using.' Large SUVs under the spotlight The alliance's attack on Range Rover comes weeks after an environmental think tank dubbed SUVs a 'growing threat to public safety' It claimed their higher bonnets means drivers are unable to see children as old as nine standing directly in front of them. This, it said, is a particular risk when motorists are leaving a driveway or parking space, or when traveling in stop-start traffic outside schools. Transport & Environment, which produced the report, said average bonnet heights for newly-sold cars in the UK is increasing by half a centimeter a year - reaching 83.8cm in 2024 - due to the ongoing popularity of SUV-style vehicles. It pointed the finger squarely at the demand for JLR models in Britain for accelerating this increase in bonnet height. It claimed that the front of SUVs typically strike adult pedestrians above the center of gravity, often first hitting vital organs in the body's core, with a higher likelihood of knocking them forward and down, and a greater risk of driving over them. This is deemed far more dangerous than conventional hatchback and saloon cars with lower bonnets, which tend to hit pedestrians' legs, giving them greater chances of falling towards the vehicle, or of being deflected. However, JLR (formerly Jaguar Land Rover and the parent company of Range Rover) hit back at that report, saying it fits all its new models with the 'latest in advanced safety technology features' to mitigate such scenarios. This includes pedestrian detection, 3D surround cameras, and autonomous emergency braking. Claire Freemantle, the driver of the Land Rover Defender that collided with and caused the death of the two schoolgirls on 6 July 2023, was originally arrested at the scene. Following an initial investigation, the Crime Prosecution Service (CPS) said Ms Freemantle had suffered an epileptic seizure behind the wheel, which caused her to lose control of the vehicle that then drove through a fence and into the school playground. As a result this meant she would not be charged, it said. At the time, her solicitor said her epilepsy had 'never previously manifested itself' and Ms Freemantle 'had always enjoyed good health'. However, in January, Freemantle was released on bail after being rearrested earlier that month on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. She was arrested for the second time after the Met Police said it reviewed its investigation following the CPS's decision last June not to charge her. The Met Police said a specialist crime review group had 'identified lines of inquiry which required further examination'. Speaking in response to the tragic incident, a JLR spokesperson today told This is Money: 'Our deepest sympathies remain with all those affected. 'The Police investigation is still ongoing and therefore it would be inappropriate for us to provide further comment.'
