Cable Bushings
The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said today it had opened a recall query into about 299,000 vehicles from Stellantis, whose brands include Chrysler, Dodge and Fiat, after receiving complaints about faulty shifter cable bushings.
A bushing, usually made of rubber, connects the shifter cable to the transmission system, allowing the vehicle to change gears. If the bushing is damaged or missing, the vehicle could move in an unexpected and unhelpful direction.
The NHTSA said Fiat Chrysler in April 2019 had issued a recall on certain Dodge Dart vehicles produced between February 2012 and October 2014 in order to replace the bushing. The updated part prevented deterioration from chemicals, oils, and solvents.
However, the NHTSA received 44 consumer complaints alleging worn, misadjusted or detached shifter cables after the recall remedy was completed.
Reputational Hit
The NHTSA said its Office of Defects Investigation launched the latest investigation to evaluate whether the original recall fix was effective, determine what caused the bushing failures, and explore any other factors that could impact how the shifter cable functions.
Only last week Stellantis said it was recalling 250,651 vehicles in the U.S., due to an improperly sealed side curtain air bag.
Other recalls this year include 235,640 Ram ProMaster vans with faulty rearview camera systems, 33,777 Ram 1500 trucks with headlight failure issues and 10,396 Ram 1500 pickup trucks with tire pressure monitor errors.
At a difficult time for the auto industry given tariff uncertainty and faltering consumer confidence, this spate of recalls is an unwelcome hit to brand reputation.

Stellantis Pro One begins Cargo Box BEV production in Italy

Stellantis Pro One, the commercial vehicles division of Stellantis, has announced the start of production for the Cargo Box battery electric vehicle (BEV) at the Atessa plant in Italy. This facility is known for manufacturing Stellantis' Large Vans, such as the Citroën Relay, Fiat Professional Ducato, Peugeot Boxer, and Vauxhall Movano. The Cargo Box BEV has a cargo capacity of 18.3m3. Its interior dimensions measure 4,230mm in length, 2,032mm in width, and 2,150mm in height. Based on the Battery Electric Chassis Cab version, it delivers 410Nm of maximum torque with a power of 200kW (270hp), coupled with a 110kWh battery, allowing for a driving range of up to 323km. For customers requiring additional cargo space, the Cargo Box BEV will also be available in the L4 configuration, which increases the cargo volume to 20.5m3, with an internal length of 4,500mm and a height of 2,300mm. Stellantis Pro One has enhanced the Large Van range by introducing 22kW AC charging as standard, enabling a full charge in six hours, which is half the time required by the former 11kW solution. The Atessa plant features 15km of assembly line production, the 'largest body shop' in the Stellantis network, and a paint shop that adheres to the latest energy and environmental sustainability standards. Capable of producing more than 1,200 different configuration types, the Atessa plant offers a comprehensive production ecosystem with 14 engines, four types of transmission, more than 300 options, and eight van volumes, resulting in more than 2,500 different versions. It is also a hub for Stellantis CustomFit, a conversion and customisation programme that includes partnership with more than 550 certified partners globally. Stellantis Pro One division head Anne Abboud said: 'The launch of the Cargo Box BEV confirms the outstanding journey of this plant dedicated to proactively and quickly meeting the needs of our professional clients, according to the principles of efficiency, maximum quality, and time to market.' Recently, Stellantis has chosen ABB's PixelPaint technology for delivering precision paint finishes for DS Automobiles' new DS N°8 all-electric flagship. Nissan recalls 482,000 vehicles in US and Canada

Nissan Motor plans to recall 482,000 vehicles in the US and Canada because of possible engine problems due to manufacturing defects, according to the Japanese automaker and the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The models affected by the recall are fitted with either 1.5L 3-cylinder or 2.0L 4-cylinder VT-Turbo engines, including the 2021-2024 model-year Nissan Rogues SUVs, 2019-2020 model-year Altimas, 2019-2022 model-year Infiniti QX50s, and 2022 model-year Infiniti QX55s. The engines were found to have possible manufacturing defects in their bearings, according to the NHTSA, which could cause engine damage and lead to possible engine failure while being driven. The NHTSA noted that engine bearing failures do not typically occur immediately, but the problems tend to get worse over time. Some 444,000 of the vehicles to be recalled were sold in the US, while 38,000 were sold in Canada. Nissan said it will send out letters to owners of the affected vehicles in August to check for and remedy any damage. Nissan sold a total of 488,526 vehicles in the US in the first half of 2025, down just slightly from last year. The Rogue was its best-selling model in this period with 47,461 deliveries, while sales of the Altima sedan amounted to 26,298 units. Woman cannot attend funeral after Citroen recalls

A woman says she cannot attend her friend's funeral after her car was recalled without a replacement. About 120,000 drivers in the UK have been left unable to drive their Citroens after a lethal fault with airbags prompted car giant Stellantis, which owns Citreon, to say people should stop using versions of the Citroen C3 and related DS3 altogether until fixed. Pamela Slater, of Wincanton, Somerset, is one of those people and cannot get her car repaired until the end of August. "I should be going to a friend's funeral and I can't get there now," she said. "I was going to take a friend to a hospital, she can't drive because of an eye problem. This is awful, I'm totally lost without a car." More news stories for Somerset Listen to the latest news for Somerset The "stop-drive" instruction issued by Stellantis, which owns Citroen, followed growing concerns about the safety of airbags fitted to these models, following a fatal accident in France last month. It is the latest drama in the 20-year scandal over now-defunct Japanese manufacturer Takata, whose airbags were installed by nearly all the world's leading car-makers. "It was news to me because I hadn't heard anything about these recalls and I was mortified," Ms Slater said. "I tried contacting a local garage but they were inundated, a garage in Trowbridge quoted me the end of August to get it done. "I contacted my insurance and they said I'm not covered if I'm in an accident. I'm fortunate in that I'm retired but there must be people who are working who can't get to work." Stuart Masson, a motoring journalist known as the Car Expert, said while vehicle recalls were quite common, stop-drive notices were "very rare". "It's even rarer when they involve large numbers of cars, we're talking about 120,000 in the UK, in Europe about 900,000," Mr Masson added. "Unsurprisingly it's not the easiest thing to make it all fixed immediately." Stellantis said it had no plans to provide compensation, while adding it had "mobilised the whole company" to source the number of replacement airbags required. A spokesperson said: "It is inevitable, with such a large number of vehicles affected, that customers will be inconvenienced in the short term." What is not clear is how customers should get their cars to dealerships for the repair work, as they cannot be driven. Industry experts say drivers should check with their insurers before getting behind the wheel. The company said it was "investigating options of airbag replacement at other sites, in addition to our Citroen network, including at [the owner's] home". Follow BBC Somerset on Facebook and X.
