WATCH: Shreyas Iyer gets ‘clean bowled' by his mother while playing cricket in living room
With experts advocating for Shreyas Iyer's inclusion in India's ongoing Test series against England, the batter was seen having a relaxing time with his family in their home, playing cricket with his mother. In a video shared by Punjab Kings, Iyer's IPL franchise, the PBKS captain was facing deliveries from his mother in the living room with one delivery even breaching his defence.
'Only time SARPANCH won't mind getting bowled!,' Punjab Kings posted on X, sharing the video.
His mother gleefully celebrated as she shouted 'out' with the video ending soon after. Shreyas and his parents share a pretty comfortable bond with his parents taking pride in narrating the pranks their children play on them to visitors.
When The Indian Express visited their home once, the father spoke of how Shreyas was in the habit of fooling them on phone. He once faked an English accent to check if his father was traveling to the UK to watch his son play a county game. When his mother is in the kitchen, Shreyas's 'what's cooking' inquiry is unique: 'Aaj kya bigaad rahi ho (what meal are you spoiling today)'. But still Shreyas might be the only Indian cricketer who still gets dropped to the airport by both his parents.

Meanwhile, there were questions raised over Iyer's exclusion from India's extensive 18-member squad announced in May, and the situation sparked more questions about the 30-year-old's red-ball future at the international level. Iyer was in blistering form in the IPL, leading Punjab Kings to a runners-up finish with his best season with the bat, scoring 604 runs at a 50-plus average and a staggering 175.07 strike rate with 39 sixes. Iyer also had a productive Ranji Trophy season besides leading Mumbai to the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy win in December 2024.
In nine First Class matches, including an Irani Cup triumph, Iyer aggregated 699 runs with two centuries and three fifties. However, that would not be enough to make a comeback to the Test squad for Iyer, who last represented India during the 2024 home series against England.
Chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar had reasoned that there was no room currently for Iyer in the scheme of things despite his solid form at the domestic level.
'Yes, Shreyas Iyer has played well in domestic cricket, but at the moment, there is no room for him on the Test Team,' he said while speaking to reporters in Mumbai when announcing the Test squad in late May.

I don't know why it is, but it is inherently in our nature.' But Armaan Malik feels things are heading towards a better situation. 'I can see a change now with a lot of people championing Indian artistes because a lot of international artistes are collaborating with Indian artistes. So, suddenly it's cool to support Indian artistes,' he says. While the singer believes it's a great time to be an Indian artiste with so many global collaborations and acceptance happening, he also takes credit for being one of the firsts to do that. 'I did it at a time when no one else was doing it. I kind of opened that portal, which I am very happy I did. In 2020, when pandemic hit and I'd released my debut English single Control, that was the starting point for people viewing an Indian singer differently. I was not then looked at just a playback singer,' he insists. Armaan asserts that it took him a while to venture into English music because he didn't have anyone to look up to doing the same growing up. 'I remember I had this conversation with my father at the age of 14 that I wanted to be an English pop singer, and he was like 'ye kahaan se aaya?' He gave me a great advice, and told me to focus on Hindi music and Bollywood for now, make the following, build yourself as an artiste, become big, then do it. I think that was the greatest advice I ever got. I built my whole career first in my home country, in my home language, and then took the decision to do English pop music. I dreamt of doing this at 14, but I had to wait 10 years to put out my first English song. When I was 14, if someone else was already doing it, I wouldn't had to wait that long. So, when I did it, a lot of kids came up and say thank you as it gave them confidence,' he says, adding, 'The next big global song has got to come from India, and it will happen in the next two to three years.'

Dhoni seeks trademark for sobriquet 'Captain Cool'
New Delhi: Former Indian cricket team captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni has filed a trademark application for the phrase 'CAPTAIN COOL', a sobriquet widely associated with his calm on-field demeanour. According to the Trade Marks Registry portal, the application's status is 'accepted and advertised'. It was published in the official trademark journal on June 16. The application was filed on June 5. The proposed trademark is registered under the category for sports training, providing sports training facilities, sports coaching and services. No comments could immediately be obtained from Dhoni. Interestingly, another company, Prabha Skill Sports (OPC) Pvt Ltd, had earlier filed a similar application for the phrase. However, that application's status is showing as 'rectification filed'. Earlier this month, Dhoni was inducted into the ICC's Hall of Fame for the year 2025 along with seven cricketers, including Australian great Matthew Hayden and South Africa's Hashim Amla. The ICC hailed Dhoni as a player who excelled not just in numbers but also in "extraordinary consistency, fitness and longevity". "Celebrated for his calm under pressure and unmatched tactical nous, but also a trailblazer in the shorter formats, MS Dhoni's legacy as one of the game's greatest finishers, leaders and wicketkeepers has been honoured with his induction into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame," the ICC statement had said.
