Faith Kipyegon breaks her 1500m world record as Beatrice Chebet smashes 5,000m mark
On a day where the women's 5,000m world record also fell in the 50th running of the Prefontaine Classic, the 31-year-old Kenyan looked to be odds against to break her record at the bell. Yet Kipyegon was able to find an extra gear as she ran the last 300m in a staggering 44 seconds to break her previous world record by 0.36 sec.
Eight days earlier she had faded sharply in Paris to run 4:06 for the mile. But here she looked far stronger and sharper as she came home in 3min 48.68sec. Ethiopia's Diribe Welteji was second in 3:51.44, ahead of Australia's Jessica Hull in 3:52.67. Britain's Georgia Bell finished strongly to come fourth in a season's best 3:54.76.
Earlier the Olympic 5,000m and 10,000m champion, Beatrice Chebet, became the first woman in history to cover 5,000m inside 14 minutes, clocking a world record of 13:58.06. The Kenyan, returning to the track where she broke the world 10,000m record last year, was tracked for most of the race by the former world 5,000m record holder Gudaf Tsegay and Agnes Jebet Ngetich.
But she kicked hard with 200 metres remaining before taking 2.15 seconds off Tsegay's best. Ngetich took second place in 14:01.29, the third-fastest time in history, and Tsegay placed third in 14:04.41.
'When I was coming here to Eugene, I was coming to prepare to run a world record, and I said I have to try,' explained Chebet. 'I said if Faith is trying, why not me? And today, I'm so happy because I've achieved being the first woman to run under 14.'
There was also a thrilling men's mile race as the 20-year-old Dutch star Niels Laros came from 20 metres back in the final 100m to somehow beat the Olympic bronze medallist Yarod Neguse by one-hundredth of a second in a time of 3:45.94.
There was also a shock in the women's 100m as Melissa Jefferson-Wooden beat the Olympic champion Julien Alfred in a thriller. The pair were locked together all the way down the straight before the American just got her head in front to win in 10.75 sec, despite running into a -1.5m/s headwind, with Alfred 0.02 sec back.
Britain's Dina Asher-Smith was sixth in 11.14 with Sha'Carri Richardson last in 11.19.

Rangers look to get back on winning track vs. Athletics
July 21 - The Texas Rangers aim to get back above .500 when they continue a nine-game homestand by hosting the Athletics on Monday in the first of a three-game series in Arlington, Texas. The Athletics will send left-hander Jacob Lopez (3-5, 4.20 ERA) to the mound to start while their American League West rivals will counter with rookie right-hander Jack Leiter (5-6, 4.37). Texas comes into the series after taking two games from AL Central-leading Detroit over the weekend but dropping the final game of the set 2-1 on Sunday evening. The Rangers collected just 12 total hits in the three games (four in each contest) but gave the league-leading Tigers all they wanted and more. The Athletics lost twice in three games in Cleveland, most recently an 8-2 setback on Sunday. I'm just keeping hitters off-balance and trying to be smart." Lopez has faced the Rangers twice in his career, with both of those appearances this season. Tragedy as talented athlete Tommy Oswald dies aged just 33 after becoming known as 'Australia's nicest bloke' thanks to a stunning act of generosity
The Aussie athletics community has been rocked by the tragic death of much-loved young father and talented runner Tommy Oswald, who was once dubbed 'Australia's nicest bloke'. Oswald, 33, captured the hearts of the nation in 2015 by taking in his homeless, pregnant teenage cousin when she had nowhere else to turn. The athlete also founded the very popular Facebook page Athletes Australia, a community with more than 35,000 members. On Saturday, a post to the page shared the tragic news of Oswald's death. 'This is by far the hardest post I have ever had to write in this group and just a warning that this may be very tough to read,' Tim Ohthy wrote. 'I am devastated to let everyone know that yesterday the founder of this amazing group Tommy Oswald passed away suddenly. 'Tommy was not only passionate about athletics, but just a damn good human being. Whilst always being up for a laugh and quick to take the piss out of anything and everything, he was equally quick when it came to supporting a mate, looking after family or just helping a complete stranger out. 'He had an incredibly kind heart, which he shared with MANY people both inside this group and outside. 'My thoughts are with his wife Alana and his little girl Ella during this tough time. As well as the rest of his family, close friends, work colleagues and basically anyone who had the pleasure of meeting Tommy.' Oswald's family also released a statement. 'The world is a lesser place today after the death of Tommy Oswald. Tommy, 33, was a beautiful young father and loving husband, who had a huge impact on the lives of all who knew him,' they said. 'Police are investigating the cause of his death, and his wife Alana and extended family have asked for privacy during this terrible time. 'They will not be making any further comment.' Oswald's cousin Kiarna, whom he took in 10 years ago, posted to Facebook: 'I'm so broken that you're gone it's breaking my heart. Tommy you will always be my favourite cousin, I love you forever.' Shattered Aussie runners have posted tributes to Oswald online A swathe of shattered Australian athletes have also posted tributes online, including Jane Fleming, Sally Pearson and Melinda Gainsford-Taylor. Olympian Glynis Nunn posted: 'Tommy spoke to everyone on the ground and just loved his family and friends. Never too busy for anyone. Opened his heart to all. A tragic loss to the community far and wide. Prayers to his family.' One of Oswald's friends, Jason Wright, has set up a GoFundMe page to support his devastated family. 'I am privileged to have been Tommy's mate for 10 years,' he posted. 'He was the guy that helps you move, jumps on a ladder and helps you paint a gutter, picks you up from the pub drunk or goes for a long beach walk and listens to your problems. 'Many of my network and friends have been privileged to experience his friendship and/or had the opportunity to work with him and I am now asking you to help his family with a gesture of goodwill.'
