The Brief
Smokey Robinson and his wife were named in a $50 million lawsuit alleging them of sexual battery, assault, false imprisonment, and creating a hostile work environment.
Four former housekeepers who worked for the couple say Robinson would repeatedly rape them in his home.
The LA County Sheriff's Department has now launched a criminal investigation into the Motown legend.
LOS ANGELES - A criminal investigation has been launched into Motown legend Smokey Robinson following accusations of sexual battery, assault and more.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said Thursday in a statement that its Special Victims Bureau is "actively investigating criminal allegations" against Robinson. The statement said the probe is in its early stages, and no other details would be provided.
The backstory
Last week, Robinson and his wife Frances were named in a $50 million lawsuit alleging he repeatedly raped and sexually assaulted four former housekeepers.
According to attorneys with Harris & Hayden Law Firm, the four unnamed women accuse the couple of sexual battery, assault, false imprisonment, gender violence, and creating a hostile work environment.
Some of the incidents date back to 2007. During a press conference on May 6, attorneys called Robinson a serial rapist and assaulter.
Attorney John Harris said on multiple occasions Robinson would summon the women to his 'blue bedroom' and assault and rape them.

Jane Doe 1 worked for the Robinsons from January 2023 to February 2024. Jane Doe 2 worked for the Robinsons from May 2014 to February 2020. Jane Doe 3 worked from February 2012 to April 2024 and Jane Doe 4 was employed the longest, having been a housekeeper from October 2006 to April 2024.
Harris said they all quit due to repeated sexual assaults.
"Our four clients have a common thread… they're Hispanic women who were employed as housekeepers by the Robinsons, earning below minimum wage. As low-wage workers in vulnerable positions, they lack the resources and options necessary to protect themselves from sexual assault throughout their tenure as employees for the Robinsons," Harris said during the press conference. "These women were all low wage earners living from paycheck to paycheck. They all feared missing a payday and not being able to pay their rent or buy food for their families. And also Smokey Robinson's celebrity status intimidated them and all made them feel powerless. I want to add that these four women were afraid of shame, familial humiliation, and embarrassment."
Robinson's wife was also named in the lawsuit. Attorneys believe Frances knew about the alleged sexual misconduct and took no preventive action to stop it. Attorneys also say Frances created a hostile work environment.
"They worked 60 hours a week and never got paid overtime. They were chastised by Miss. Robinson if they tried to eat, if they tried to take breaks. And that's part of the allegations. Just the employer-employee relationship they violated, we allege, numerous labor laws." Harris added.
What's next
Robinson's lawyer has not commented on the criminal investigation, but previously called the allegations "vile" and "false" and said the women's lawsuit was "simply an ugly method of trying to extract money from an 85-year-old American icon."

Married mom and English teacher pleads to 21 sex counts involving schoolgirl

A married Ohio mom and teacher has pleaded guilty to 21 sex charges involving a schoolgirl she began abusing when the child was just 13. Stefanie Erin Kellenberger, a 40-year-old sixth-grade English instructor, sexually abused the girl at her home in Shelby over 18 months, according to Richland County Common Pleas Judge Brent Robinson. The pedophile pleaded guilty for all four counts of third-degree felony sexual battery and 17 counts of third-degree felony unlawful sexual conduct with a minor, a court docket from Richland County Common Pleas Court shows. 3 Married teacher Stefanie Erin Kellenberger has pleaded guilty to grooming and having sex with a schoolgirl. Shelby City School District Kellenberger was presented with two options by prosecutors for her crimes: either 12 years flat prison time or 15 years with the possibility of judicial release after 10 years. She opted for the second option when she pleaded guilty in court Friday, court papers show. At the time the abuse started in February 2020, Kellenberger's victim was just 13 years old, with the teacher starting to have sex with the girl after she turned 14 and continuing until she turned 16, Richland County Assistant Prosecutor Bryan Dove told the judge. 'The relationship continued until the age of consent,' Dove said, according to the Mansfield News Journal. 3 Kellenberger now faces up to 15 years in jail. Richland County Jail Judge Robinson noted, 'Which, in the state of Ohio, is 16 years old.' Kellenberger's crimes continued until October 2021, Robinson said. Kellenberger's lawyer, James Mayer III, told the judge, 'Consent was never an issue in this case. It's an age thing.' Robinson asked the prosecutor, 'So the state is saying there was no use of force?' The ADA replied, 'Correct, Your Honor. No use of force.' 3 She changed her plea to guilty at a hearing Friday. Zach Tuggle/News Journal / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images Kellenberger, who taught sixth-grade English and language arts at Shelby City Schools at the time of her crimes, was put on paid administrative leave in February 2024 after her abuse came to light. She was indicted in September and resigned the next month, although a profile with her name and picture was still active on the Shelby City Schools website as of Monday. Her Instagram account, where she describes herself as a 'wife, mom, teacher,' is still active. Kellenberger's victim recommended that the former teacher spend three years in jail, but the judge said that sentence was too short. 'The victim is relieved to not have to testify. That's why we entered into this agreement with the defendant,' Dove told the judge. As part of Kellenberger's plea deal, she will be subject to five years post-release control after prison and must register with the county sheriff as a Tier 3 sex offender, or the most serious, every 90 days for the rest of her life. She must also remain under electronic monitoring until her sentencing Oct. 6, have no contact with minors, avoid further criminal conduct and forever forfeit her teaching license.

The Best Dishes Eater Editors Ate This Week: August 4

The editors at Eater LA dine out several times a week, if not per day, which means we're always encountering standout dishes that deserve time in the limelight. Here's the very best of everything the team has eaten this week. Cavatelli alla norcina from Bestia in the Arts District Cavatelli alla norcina from Bestia in the Arts District. Matthew Kang Though the greater Downtown and Arts District has been struggling due to ICE raids, protests, and the general lack of activity, Bestia remains a beacon of bustle, even on a Monday night. The restaurant's signature cavatelli alla norcina, which may be out of season in the middle of summer, remains a world-class pasta dish. Hand-rolled ricotta dumplings are laced with pork fat and cheese, tossed so well that the sauce appears as a glaze on the pasta. Usually, black truffle kind of gets lost, but the earthy, heady flavors play well with the amalgam of meat and carb. A whisp of thyme gives the whole dish a bit of levity, and the modest portion is big enough to share with two people without overburdening the appetite. 2121 E. Seventh Place, Los Angeles, CA 90021. — Matthew Kang, lead editor, Eater Southern California/Southwest Pizza Romana from Truly Pizza in Dana Point Pizza Romana from Truly Pizza in Dana Point. Matthew Kang Ask chef Chris Decker if he needs another type of pizza on the menu, and he'll respond with, 'of course,' which might've been the genesis of this cracker-thin pizza Romana that isn't on the menu yet at his Dana Point restaurant, Truly Pizza. Worried that this might fill us up too early, Decker said the pie only has five ounces of dough and is stretched super-thin, giving it an almost lahmajune-like shape. What makes this pizza shine is the ridiculously deep and sweet tomato sauce on top, dusted with feather-like curls of pecorino cheese, and a gentle perfume of dried oregano. The crust is crispy underneath but remains a bit pliable, with smidges of blistering on the outer edges. Though this is just my second visit to Truly Pizza, I am more convinced than ever that it might be the single remarkable pizzeria in Southern California. 24402 Del Prado Ave, Dana Point, CA 92629. — Matthew Kang, lead editor, Eater Southern California/Southwest Tlacoyos from Komal in South LA Tlacoyos from Komal in South LA. Rebecca Roland Nearly a year after opening in Mercado La Paloma, Komal has only gotten better. The stall, which focuses on pre-Hispanic dishes found in Mexico City and Oaxaca, has found its groove, churning out plates of quesadillas, suadero tacos, molotes in a rich mole, and gently sweet pan de calabaza. But it's the tlacoyos that remain a standout for me, with well-seasoned beans sealed in an oblong masa sachet of sorts. An acidic cactus salad sits on top of the tlacoyos, adding contrast to the salty ayocote beans, while the crumbled cheese gently melts against the heat of the tlacoyo below. While the tlacoyo can stand up to takeout, it's a dish best enjoyed right at a table at Mercado La Paloma. Make sure to grab an agua fresca from Komal or from the adjacent Oaxacalifornia to wash it all down. 3655 S. Owner Ellen Ramos, whose resume includes Cha Cha Chá, 71 Above, and Redbird, finally has a space of her own to serve a lineup of Mexico City and Los Angeles-inspired pastries. At Santa Canela, Ramos serves new school takes on classic pastries like conchas, stuffed here with vanilla cream, and champurrado-flavored maple doughnuts. The iconic LA-shaped churro is, of course, available (but takes a few extra minutes to prepare), alongside puffy churro croissants and savory focaccia sandwiches. The bakery is takeout only, but there are a few seats on the sidewalk if you're looking to eat on-site. 5601 N. What Happened to Rapper Soulja Boy? Arrest Reports Explained

Soulja Boy, the rapper best known for his 2007 hit 'Crank That (Soulja Boy),' was taken into custody during the early hours of Sunday, August 3, 2025. The arrest followed a traffic stop in Los Angeles, where authorities detained him in connection with a reported legal violation. Here's what we know so far about Soulja Boy's arrest. Rapper Soulja Boy arrested for firearm possession, claims report Police arrested Soulja Boy, legally known as DeAndre Cortez Way, early Sunday morning after stopping a vehicle at Melrose and Genesee in Los Angeles around 2:35 a.m. The 35-year-old rapper was riding as a passenger. Officers suspected him of being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. During the stop, officers spotted a firearm inside the vehicle and took Way into custody. Authorities booked him into jail at the LAPD's Wilshire Division shortly after 6 a.m., according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department inmate database. Police did not immediately share the reason for the stop or identify the other occupants in the vehicle. TMZ first reported the arrest, and Variety later confirmed the incident with the LAPD. A representative for Soulja Boy did not immediately respond to requests for comment from either outlet. Soulja Boy rose to prominence in 2007 with his hit single 'Crank That (Soulja Boy),' which topped the Billboard Hot 100 and earned a Grammy nomination for Best Rap Song. He followed it with other hits, including 'Turn My Swag On' and 'Kiss Me Thru the Phone.' This arrest adds to the rapper's ongoing legal troubles. In April 2025, a civil court ordered him to pay over $4 million in damages after it found him liable for sexually assaulting and physically and emotionally abusing a former assistant. In a 2021 interview with Paper, Soulja Boy reflected on his status in the rap industry: 'I don't really care about your opinions and assumptions any more, because I now understand that people don't know what they are talking about.' A legal representative for Way has not provided a public statement regarding the arrest. The post What Happened to Rapper Soulja Boy?
