Two men arrested after reckless driving, carjacking and crash in NW Indiana: police
Two men were arrested in Merrillville on Feb. 14 after a reckless driving spree, carjacking at knifepoint, and a crash on US 30.
After carjacking a black Acura, the suspects fled but were tracked down by footprints and K9 assistance, eventually turning up at the Merrillville Fire Department, where they were arrested.
Cain Knaus and Stephanie Raices face multiple charges, including armed robbery and auto theft, with Knaus also having an active parole violation warrant.
MERRILLVILLE, Ind. - Two men are behind bars after a reckless driving spree, armed carjacking, and crash that led to a foot chase on Friday, authorities said.
What we know
Indiana State Police initially responded to reports of a reckless driver on I-65 southbound from I-80/I-94.
The vehicle was reportedly seen swerving at high speeds between the left and right shoulders, nearly colliding with several cars.
Troopers later received reports of a silver Honda that had crashed near the US 30 ramp.
After the crash, two suspects exited the vehicle and approached other drivers who had stopped to help.
The suspects carjacked a black Acura at knifepoint, assaulted the driver, and forced them out of the vehicle before fleeing westbound on US 30, police said.
Tracking the Suspects
Officers from Merrillville, Hobart, and the Lake County Sheriff's Department assisted in the search and found the abandoned Acura in the 7900 block of Rhode Island Street.
Troopers tracked footprints in the snow and used a K9 unit to locate the suspects.
Meanwhile, the Merrillville Fire Department reported two men who entered the station claiming they had been robbed. Their descriptions matched those of the suspects, and police took them into custody.
The suspects were identified as 26-year-old Cain Knaus of Walshville, Ill., and 34-year-old Stephanie Raices (also known as Victor Zarate) of Chicago and Bronx, N.Y. Knaus had an active parole violation warrant.
Both were booked into Lake County Jail and face multiple charges.

The Lake County Prosecutor's Office approved these charges against the two suspects:
Armed robbery- Level 3 felony
Robbery- Level 5 felony
Auto theft- Level 6 felony
Battery- Class B misdemeanor
Leaving the scene of a crash- Class B misdemeanor
Reckless driving- Class C misdemeanor
Authorities are still investigating which suspect was driving the vehicle during the crash.

One person injured in Hollywood neighborhood shooting
One person was taken to the hospital after a shooting early Friday morning in a Hollywood neighborhood. According to police, just before 1:30 a.m. officers were sent to the 1200 block of Hollywood Boulevard, just east of Young Circle, in response to reports of a shooting. When officers arrived, they found a person suffering from a gunshot wound. The injured person was taken to Memorial Regional Hospital where they were listed as stable. A SWAT team was called in along with K9 officers. Surveillance video from a home in the area shows an armed man walking through the front yard as he's confronted by police officers. "I was driving home from dinner and my daughter texted me that I should try to get home as soon as possible because there was a guy jumping the fence in our backyard. He somehow managed his way into our front yard. That's where two cops showed up. They had him at gunpoint, he was holding a gun. They were like drop the gun, drop the gun, and I wasn't sure what was happening. I was about five minutes away from home and I saw cops blowing past me," William Castillo said. Police have not said if anyone was taken into custody. The eastbound lanes of Hollywood Boulevard between 12 Avenue and 13 Avenue were closed for the investigation.

Sprecher/AP What To Know Police were called to the Motel 6 in the 12700 block of LBJ Freeway just after 5 a.m. on June 20 for reports of a shooting, according to the Garland Police Department. Officers found Morales with a gunshot wound. He was taken to a hospital, where he later died, Fox 4 reported. Four witnesses who arrived with Morales were interviewed at the scene. One woman told police she had been robbed earlier and that Morales began messaging the suspects while posing as a prostitute to set up a meeting at Motel 6, according to the arrest affidavit obtained by Fox 4. Surveillance footage shows a pickup carrying Morales arriving at the motel around 4:21 a.m., followed by a Toyota and a gray Acura, according to the outlet. Just after 5 a.m., Morales confronted a man from the Toyota, leading to a struggle. A second suspect arrived and shot Morales, while the third suspect, driving the Acura, pulled up to the scene before all three fled in the Acura and Toyota, Fox 4 reported. Men accused of staging phony car crashes for insurance payouts: Queens DA

(PIX11) – Two Brooklyn men are accused of deliberately causing three car collisions, including a Belt Parkway crash that was caught on camera, and then seeking insurance payouts. Prosecutors alleged that 53-year-old Jaime Huiracocha allegedly planned the crashes and lured people to participate with the promises of cash payouts, while 34-year-old Victor Murillo was accused of driving the car used in the collisions. More Local News Huiracocha allegedly met with a group inside an East New York medical clinic and instructed them on how to stage a car crash on Oct. 16, 2024, according to prosecutors. Prosecutors alleged that the participants were then told to send photos of the collision to a woman. The group then met up near the Belt Parkway, with a silver Honda Civic and a red Kia Sport in tow, according to prosecutors. Prosecutors alleged that the participants were told by Huiracocha what vehicles to sit in and the drivers were given headphones to communicate with one another. Murillo was asked to drive the Honda Civic, according to prosecutors. Prosecutors alleged that the other participants were given a black plastic tarp and told to cover the back window after the crash so Murillo could swap seats with a passenger without being seen. All of the cars then got on the Belt Parkway around 11 a.m. and the group allegedly picked out Asphia Natasha's vehicle for the staged collision, according to prosecutors. What they didn't know, prosecutors alleged, was that Natasha's vehicle had both front and rear dashboard cameras. Passengers in the Honda then held up the plastic tarp on the back window and Murillo and someone else in the car allegedly swapped seats, according to prosecutors. Prosecutors alleged that four people got out of the Honda, including a woman who exited the driver's seat and a man who identified himself as Maikel Martinez. Martinez claimed that the woman was his wife, according to prosecutors. Prosecutors alleged that the Kia, which was following Natasha's car, pulled up to the crash. Murillo is accused of getting out of the Honda and into the Kia, which then fled the scene, according to prosecutors. Prosecutors alleged that Huiracocha and Murillo staged two other crashes that happened before the Belt Parkway collision on Oct. 3 and Aug. 24. Allstate Insurance Company said it paid out more than $82,000 for injury claims relating to those two crashes, and that it received a claim for damages to the Honda for the Oct. 16 collision.
