FIR against kanwariyas for beating woman on scooty

Haridwar: An FIR was registered on Wednesday against unidentified kanwariyas after a video surfaced showing a group of pilgrims, including a woman, assaulting a local woman in Haridwar. The incident took place on Sunday night after the victim's scooty purportedly grazed past a kanwar (pot) while she was returning home with a friend. The video shows seven-eight kanwariyas verbally abusing the victim (whose face was not visible), pulling her hair and beating her. Initially, police claimed they were not aware about the incident as no formal complaint was filed. However, after public outrage on social media, senior sub-inspector Ramesh Saini of Kankhal police station registered an FIR under BNS sections 191 (rioting), 115 (voluntarily causing hurt) and 74 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty). While police said the victim remains unidentified, TOI spoke to the 40-year-old woman, who confirmed the incident took place near Rishikul trijunction in Haridwar. However, she has chosen not to file a complaint. SHO Chandra Mohan said, "We took suo motu action after the video went viral. Our team is trying to identify both the woman and the accused kanwariyas for further action." Meanwhile, police have so far registered seven cases against kanwariyas for rioting and assault across Kankhal, Bahadrabad, Roorkee and Manglaur police station areas, leading to eight arrests. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like This Could Be the Best Time to Trade Gold in 5 Years IC Markets Learn More Undo Clashes between police and kanwariyas have been reported at several places in the city and rural areas over route disagreements. SP (city) Pankaj Gairola said, "We're urging kanwariyas to take the canal route, where all basic amenities are available and their safety is ensured. However, some are adamant on using the highway. In such cases, police have had to intervene. Most of the pilgrims are following the designated route."

SI suspended for seeking sexual favours from minor for filing rape FIR

Meerut: A sub-inspector (SI) and a constable in Uttar Pradesh's Rampur district have been suspended after a 17-year-old rape survivor, who had gone to the police station to lodge a complaint, said the officer demanded sexual favours in exchange for registering an FIR. The constable was suspended for tampering with digital evidence, officials said on Wednesday. The survivor, from a minority community, had visited the police station with her mother on July 8 and submitted a written complaint and registered it through the Integrated Grievance Redressal System (IGRS). However, SI Udaiveer Singh allegedly delayed the FIR and began sending obscene and provocative text messages to the survivor. The girl told TOI, "He said the complaint would only be registered after an inquiry. During questioning, he took my phone number and, on the same night, started sending vulgar messages. He said the FIR would be filed only if I spent a night with him." Singh allegedly made voice and video calls to the girl on WhatsApp. "He told my daughter, 'Just like you cooperated with the other people, you'll have to do the same with me once, then I'll file your complaint.' by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Esse novo alarme com câmera é quase gratuito em Curitibanos (consulte o preço) Alarmes Undo When she refused, he said everything would be resolved if she spent a night alone with him," her mother added. The next morning, when the mother went to the police station, Singh allegedly made lewd remarks. "He said the complaint wouldn't be registered until both of us pleased him. He even shouted at us and drove us away," she said. Despite repeated refusals, Singh allegedly continued to contact the girl with inappropriate messages. On Monday, the girl's mother approached Rampur SP Vidyasagar Mishra. That night, constable Mohd Sarfaraz visited their home and allegedly deleted all call logs and messages from the girl's phone. However, the digital evidence had already been submitted to the SP and had circulated online. Mishra suspended both the SI and the constable. "An inquiry has been set up against the two, and they have been suspended with immediate effect," he said.

Bribery case: CBI arrests 3 I-T officials

Patna: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Wednesday formally arrested Aditya Saurabh, an Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer, along with an income-tax inspector and a multi-tasking staff (MTS) member in Patna in connection with a bribery case involving Rs 2 lakh. All three were remanded in three days' CBI custody by the CBI special court-1 in Patna. According to CBI sources, Aditya Saurabh, a 2021-batch IRS officer, is currently serving as assistant director in the income-tax Department in Patna. He is accused of demanding a bribe of Rs 2 lakh from a Hyderabad-based company. The investigation began after the CBI received a complaint about the bribery demand. Initial inquiries led to the arrest of income-tax inspector Manish Kumar Pankaj and multi-tasking staff member Shubham Raj. Their interrogation subsequently revealed the alleged involvement of the IRS officer, leading to his arrest. The bribe was accepted in a lane behind the Patna high court on Tuesday evening where all three were caught. "CBI registered an instant case on July 15, 2025, against the said accused persons on allegations of demand and acceptance of a bribe of Rs 2 lakh from the complainant for the release of a previously seized amount of Rs 13 lakh and for not initiating any further inquiry against him. The amount of Rs 13 lakh was reportedly seized from the complainant's brother-in-law at the airport, which was intimated to the income-tax department," said a CBI press release. The CBI laid a trap and caught the accused red-handed while accepting the bribe. The Rs 2 lakh bribe money was recovered during the operation. The agency stated the money was collected on the direction and behalf of the IRS officer. Searches were conducted at three different locations linked to the accused in Patna. The CBI is now gathering documentary evidence, phone call recordings and other electronic proof.
