Martin Bakole and Ilunga Makabu: Brothers in boxing

Independent27-05-2025
Heavyweight contender Martin Bakole will take on another prospect in Efe Ajagba on the 3rd of May on the Canelo vs Scull undercard.
The self-proclaimed 'most avoided' heavyweight will be looking to get back on track after a second-round knockout loss to Joseph Parker in February on two days' notice.
But what many don't know is that Bakole's boxing inspiration is his older brother, Ilunga Makabu, the former WBC cruiserweight champion.
Their difference in name has kept their relation relatively unknown throughout their careers, but who are the brothers and how did they both end up as elite level boxers?
Who is Ilunga Makabu?
Makabu's professional boxing record stands at 30-4 (26 knockouts). Born in Kananga, the capital of Kasai Province in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Makabu left home at the age of twenty and ended up in Johannesburg, South Africa.
He was taken under the wing of the late famous trainer Nick Durandt who helped him turn professional in 2008. The 37-year-old still trains with Durandt's son, Damien.
Makabu had an early set-back, losing his debut by first round TKO. He rebounded with a string of nineteen back-to-back victories, winning all but one by knockout and collecting the WBC Silver and International titles along the way.
It was a trip to Merseyside for the biggest fight of Makabu's career – facing Liverpudlian boxing legend, Tony Bellew, for the vacant WBC cruiserweight belt at Goodison Park in 2016. A loss by third-round knockout after dropping Bellew in the first sent the Congolese knockout artist back to the drawing board.
A fight in Kinshasa, billed as 'Rumble in the Jungle II', saw Makabu defeat Michal Cieslak over twelve rounds to claim the WBC cruiserweight title in 2020. He successfully defended his belt twice before losing it in a twelfth-round stoppage to current champion Badou Jack in 2023.
The former champion would get a shot at reclaiming his cruiserweight throne later that year after Jack vacated his belt. The South African-based fighter lost by a third-round knockout to Noel Mikaelian and has since only fought once, in a fight held in Kinshasa.
Martin Bakole: The not-so-little brother
Standing at 6ft 6in and weighing more than 250lbs, it is hard to see anything little about Bakole. He currently holds a record of 21-2 (sixteen knockouts) and is based in Airdrie, Scotland, via The Congo and South Africa.
Bakole credits his older brother as the reason he left home. Makabu called him and told him to come to South Africa and train with him – which led to him accompanying his brother to Liverpool for his world title fight against Tony Bellew.
Citing that the heavyweight game in South Africa was not where he wanted it to be at that time, he decided the UK was the right place for him and asked if his promoter could find him a fight.
"I went there, but boxing in South Africa is down at the moment in the heavyweights," Bakole told Queensberry Promotions. "I decided to come here because my brother was fighting Tony Bellew for the WBC world title, which he lost in 2016. I told him then that I wanted to stay because, for me, boxing is now here in the UK."
After being sent to Scotland for sparring, Bakole met his current trainer Billy Nelson for the first time. The 31-year-old is now settled in Airdrie and has been training under Nelson since 2016.
Their partnership has been a successful one, with Bakole winning sixteen of his eighteen fights whilst being based in Scotland. He most recently lost to Joseph Parker for the WBO interim heavyweight title.
Bakole will now be hoping to reestablish himself in the heavyweight division, continuing his journey on the path first carved by his older brother. Their shared pursuit of boxing success - though often unrecognised as a family affair - has shaped two elite careers across different weight classes.

Dillian Whyte confident of pulling off surprise against Moses Itauma

Veteran Dillian Whyte says he is capable of pulling off a surprise against his fellow Briton Moses Itauma, the bright young star of heavyweight boxing being lined up to take on Oleksandr Usyk. Whyte and Itauma are due to fight in Riyadh on 16 August. Itauma, aged 20, little more than half the age of the 37-year-old Whyte, has racked up a flawless 12-0 record in his professional career that has spanned just over two years. Turki Alalshikh, the chairman of the General Entertainment Authority, which owns Riyadh Season, has said he would like to make Itauma face Usyk, the undisputed world heavyweight champion, next. Many pundits and ex-professionals say Itauma will be the next man to rule over the heavyweight division, and see the Whyte fight as a stepping stone. Whyte admitted there was a lot of excitement around Itauma, but added: 'We've seen it time and time again where these guys are built up, they're knocking everybody out, they're prospects and stuff. We have to see what happens. 'Sometimes these guys get rushed, or sometimes they get blown out of proportion and then things go wrong. It's heavyweight boxing. Heavyweight boxing … it's unpredictable. I've always taken the most dangerous fight and the hardest fight there is.' Whyte denied he was fazed by the speculation about the fight. 'I don't feel disrespected. In life, everybody's got an opinion. Everybody's going to say something. He's been in the limelight, he's the new man, he's shining, he's knocking everyone out … there's excitement about him. 'People's memories are short in boxing. You remember a few years ago when David Haye fought Carl Thompson, Carl Thompson was just a danger man that was in the wilderness. No one cared about Carl Thompson. David Haye was blowing everyone away, smashing everyone's heads in. And then, look, Carl Thompson showed up and got the job done.' Whyte was knocked out by Tyson Fury at Wembley in April 2022 after being the WBC number one contender for more than four years. A rematch with Anthony Joshua was cancelled in August 2023 after an adverse finding in one of Whyte's drugs tests. After 15 months out of the ring he won a contentious decision victory over Jermaine Franklin in March 2024. He fought a further two times in 2024 against Christian Hammer and Ebenezer Tetteh, respectively, two fights in which Whyte did not impress, showing levels that were far off the heights and skill level he had shown in victories such as the one against current WBO mandatory challenger, Joseph Parker. Sign up to The Recap The best of our sports journalism from the past seven days and a heads-up on the weekend's action after newsletter promotion A win for Whyte would revive his career and could potentially lead to a rematch with Anthony Joshua or Derek Chisora; the opportunities are endless. Otherwise retirement may loom. Whyte was in a reflective mood when he met reporters, discussing his tough childhood in Brixton, south London. 'Sometimes I had no guardians or no one to take care of me. So I was out in the street surviving, stealing and robbing food and stuff to get by, eating from trash cans, doing stuff like that. You know, working as a kid, I remember selling Fanta bottles, the glass bottles to make money, selling fruits, farming, doing stuff. So, I've been suffering. 'All I've done in my life is fight and struggle, fight and struggle, fight and struggle, fight and struggle, fight and struggle. So it's what I know how to do. I've had to learn to be a better human being.' He added: 'But fighting … and being amongst animals, are the two things that I know to do best.'

Jake Paul's manager insists Anthony Joshua fight ‘can absolutely happen'

Jake Paul 's manager and promotional partner, Nakisa Bidarian, has said that a fight with Anthony Joshua 'can absolutely happen'. Bidarian appeared on Sky Sports News and confirmed they are pursuing the fight with 'AJ'. He said that he sees Paul as the 'A-side' for this fight and that, looking at Joshua's record, two of his losses came against Oleksandr Usyk, who is an undersized heavyweight in the modern era and of vaguely similar dimensions to Paul. Bidarian said: 'I think the fight can absolutely happen. I'm looking at it as Jake vs Joshua, which is quite impactful in many ways. 'If you look at Anthony Joshua, I think he is 28-4, and two of his losses are against Oleksandr Usyk. Usyk weighed in at 220lbs for those fights'. The Most Valuable Promotions co-founder was quick to add that he was not drawing comparisons in ability between Paul and the undisputed heavyweight champion, but at his walk-around weight and having already bulked up to face Mike Tyson last year, the match-up is a realistic proposition. Bidarian explained: 'Jake is not Usyk – a lot more years of experience are needed to get to that level. But Jake walks around between 208-210 lbs, and he fought Mike Tyson at 228 lbs, so I think size-wise we can get comfortable with it." Joshua is yet to return to the ring since his knockout loss to Daniel Dubois last year and a minor surgery on his elbow but could make his comeback before the end of the year. Crossover boxing is no stranger to Joshua, who produced a devastating knockout of his own against former UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou in March 2024. Paul continues to make waves in the boxing world, in the unlikely pursuit of a world title. He defeated former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr in June, which earned him a spot in the top 15 of the WBA cruiserweight rankings. Bidarian believes that Paul has gained enough experience to take on an 'ageing' Joshua and revealed they are in active conversations with Eddie Hearn 's Matchroom. He said: 'I think experience-wise, Jake is learning fast and growing, and Joshua is a little long in the tooth. It could be a very interesting match-up, and we are actively discussing it with Matchroom. Which promoter could free agent Shields sign with?

Undisputed heavyweight champion Claressa Shields, arguably the best female fighter on the planet, is a free agent in 30-year-old has spent her professional career signed with Dmitriy Salita's Salita Promotions but announced after her latest win on Saturday that the deal had a three-weight undisputed champion, unbeaten and one of the best talkers in the sport, Shields will be a massively attractive prospect for any recent fight against Lani Daniels drew 15,000 fans at Detroit's Little Caesars Arena. A massive 71% of the tickets were purchased by alongside bitter rival Savannah Marshall, also sold more than 15,000 tickets at London's O2 Arena in 2022, with a peak TV audience of two has always been a feeling Shields is not as big as her accolades demand, so would a new promotional partner change that? BBC Sport takes a look at the options for the American star. MVP & the £4m purse minimum From the outside looking in, Jake Paul's MVP seems like the natural fit despite some public verbal sparring with took issue with MVP billing the winner of Katie Taylor v Amanda Serrano 3 as the women's pound-for-pound number in 17 fights, Shields lays a strong claim to that spot. MVP houses several of the best fighters in the world - including many of Shields' natural rivals - with lightweight world champion Terri Harper the latest fighter to Marshall and newly crowned unified super-middleweight champion Shadasia Green are also with MVP. Shields is a former champion at the weight and already has a win over Marshall. Marshall remains the last woman to beat Shields in the amateurs in says she is open to speaking to every promoter."If their vision doesn't align with my vision, then I'll walk away. I don't got any smoke with any of these entities," Shields said on Ariel x Ade: The Boxing Show., externalDespite being American, Shields' promotional options in the United States are perhaps Rank has just two females on its roster. The long-time number one boxing promoter in the US, Top Rank has no current TV deal after ending its association with ESPN last Haymon's Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) doesn't have a single female fighter signed to is MVP who has provided the biggest platforms for female fighters in the US in recent years. They staged an all-female card on Netflix in July, with six million people tuning in to watch. Reports suggested Taylor and Serrano split £14m for that herself says she believes she should earn a minimum of £4m per fight. That is a big number to start at and probably out of reach for most of the promoters in the Shields is entertaining inside and out the ring, surely she would appeal to MVP and its Netflix partners? The UK option This seems the most unlikely option despite Shields' past successes in the is of course a big player when it comes to women's lost its biggest star, Chantelle Cameron, to MVP earlier this year. Long-time Matchroom star Ellie Scotney also decided to join is a big attraction in the UK with the right dance partner, but her previous promoter Boxxer is facing an uncertain Shalom's promotional outfit appears set to part ways with broadcast giants Sky Sports and it is unclear whether its biggest stars will choose to stay. Who could Shields fight next? There is always the option Shields re-signs with Salita Promotions. She could also take a leaf out of Terence Crawford and Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez's books and look at short-term deals or fight-by-fight has been linked with fighting Laila Ali, daughter of boxing legend Muhammad Ali. It was Salita who revealed there was a £11m offer on the table, funded by Wynn Records, for it to retired in 2007 and, at 47 years old, that fight would be more circus than competitive. But boxing is no stranger to can stay at heavyweight or she could drop back down. She has won world titles in four weight rival and unified middleweight champion Franchon Crews-Dezurn was ringside for her most recent win and was expecting a face-off that was scrapped at the last it stands Crews-Dezurn seems the most likely opponent for Shields. The Detroit native is not lacking options, the biggest question is who Shields will partner with as she continues her efforts to become the universally accepted pound-for-pound female number one.
