Livestream View Of Earth From ISS Reminds You Not To Sweat The Small Stuff
A European company called Sen has sent an ultra high definition camera rig up to the ISS that will let anyone and everyone witness the majesty of our little planet. The camera system, called SpaceTV-1, was sent up to the ISS late last year and is now fully installed and streaming, reports Space.com.
The system was installed on the side of the European Space Agency's Columbus module on the ISS. From there, the rig of 4K cameras is livestreaming the view of Earth for around 20 hours a day, save for a few moments of signal loss and the times when the Earth below is in darkness.
It really is quite the site to behold, as the livestream shows off everything the Earth has to offer. There are long sweeping shots of endless blue oceans, pristine greens of the Caribbean islands and even the clouds above the UK look majestic when seen from above. When the sun sets on the ISS, the stream switches to recorded highlights of the Earth that, while I've been watching, has included some pretty stunning views of desert landscapes.
The stream is a great way to clear your head if you're feeling a little overwhelmed by the day so far, as there are no depressing stories about the lack of support for minorities, the ridiculous number of cars driving in America with safety issues or the endless cuts to emissions rules that could save this very planet. Making overwhelmed millennials less concerned about the state of the world wasn't the only aim for the Sen team, however, and it's actually got much more noble ambitions. The company is all about offering up research data to people who may not normally have access, so it's fleet of satellites and cameras in space beam climate and environment data to researchers around the world.
The new SpaceTV-1 camera setup is about furthering that goal and company founder Charles Black said that the footage collected could 'empower everyone with real-time information' and could even 'inspire people.'
To do this, it uses an array of three 4K cameras pointed down at the Earth. One features a wide angle lens that offers a panoramic view of our planet and its horizon - presumably to put any flat-Earthers off arguing. A second camera is pointed directly at the ground, and each pixel you see on the screen represents an area of about 200 feet. Finally, there's a camera pointed at one of the docking ports on the ISS.

When asked about speculation that she could be in line for an honorary damehood, the Dutchwoman said: 'I haven't thought about that. I feel so much respect from England, the Royal Family too. 'I think the most important thing is feeling valued. It's very special to get so much respect from England.' King Charles III said the team had the royal family's 'warmest appreciation and admiration' following its win. 'The next task is to bring home the World Cup in 2027 if you possibly can,' he added. A homecoming open-top bus parade follows in central London on Tuesday, where there will be a procession along The Mall and the celebration will finish with a staged ceremony in front of Buckingham Palace. Defender Jess Carter has not joined her team-mates for the celebrations in London as she has returned to the United States ahead of Gotham FC's NWSL match against the Chicago Stars on Saturday. 'The Lionesses have once again captured the hearts of the nation,' British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said. 'Their victory is not only a remarkable sporting achievement, but an inspiration for young people across the country. Scientists Are Worried About A Collapse Of This Atlantic Ocean Current: Here's Why
A certain current in the Atlantic Ocean that is essential for temperature regulation is in danger of collapsing. The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation, also known as the AMOC, runs the length of the Atlantic Ocean, including the tip of South America, the Caribbean, and all the way north to Greenland. One of its major benefits is maintaining the European climate by moving warm air from the Equator north. Climatologist and oceanographer at the National Research Center, Sandro Carniel, explained the AMOC's function to Renewable Matter. "This circulation, of which the Gulf Stream is a part, plays the fundamental role of a climate equalizer and is essentially triggered by the weight of water, its density. The colder and saltier the water is, the greater its density, and the easier it is for its mass to sink. Whereas if the water is warm and fresh (i.e., not salty), it is lighter and therefore stays at the surface more." The extreme importance of the AMOC is being threatened by greenhouse gas emissions, a driving force in global warming. Global warming would be a direct contributor to an AMOC collapse. If this is not prevented, the consequences could be catastrophic and include drastic temperature changes, altered weather patterns, and even an ice age event. Carniel continued to explain to Renewable Matter, "The huge amounts of melting ice are pouring an incredible amount of fresh water into the North Atlantic. Less and less salty and warmer waters are helping to lag the general circulation of currents." This is not a new or sudden phenomenon. In 2018, the journal Nature revealed that the buoyancy of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation had decreased by 15 percent over 70 years. While the AMOC has been affected due to global warming, it has not collapsed yet. To prevent this, greenhouse gas emissions need to be massively reduced. Industrial and manufacturing activities, transportation, and animal agriculture are all driving forces behind large amounts of greenhouse gas emissions. Despite efforts to implement better renewable energy and cleaner practices, the UN claims we are failing at attempts to control climate change. What Would Happen If The AMOC Collapsed? If the AMOC collapsed, European cities would get colder by up to 27 degrees within a few decades. So a temperature of 41 degrees could drop to 14. Comparatively, the Southern Hemisphere would get much warmer. Rising sea levels could send coastal regions underwater and also contribute to increased coastal erosion and more severe storm surges. The impact on weather patterns would be widespread. Europe would experience more violent storms. Major droughts would plague Asia. The changing weather would drastically reduce crop yield, and a full ecosystem collapse could occur across the northern Atlantic. Scientists have a historical reference point for such an event. About 12,900 years ago, the AMOC was halted when Lake Agassiz melted and unleashed massive amounts of freshwater into the sea. It's believed the lake's melting was caused by a comet. The subsequent halt of the AMOC caused over one thousand years of ice age conditions in parts of Europe and North America. Unless we are able to get a handle on global warming and protect the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation, this could be the future we have to prepare for. Read the original article on BGR. AI Ray-Ban Meta glasses help EssilorLuxottica boost sales
EssilorLuxottica, the world's top maker of eyeglasses, said Monday a tripling of sales of Ray-Ban Meta AI connected glasses helped drive increase in profits. The group's revenue climbed by 5.5 percent to 14 billion euros ($16.2 billion) in the first half of the year, with net profit edging 1.6 percent higher to 1.4 billion euros. EssilorLuxottica's chief executive Francesco Milleri said results showed the group is "keeping pace with our growth targets despite a volatile environment". Like other European companies, the weak dollar impacted the company's performance in the North American region, nearly wiping out growth in the second quarter. EssilorLuxottica said AI glasses gained momentum in the first half of the year, with Ray-Ban Meta more than tripling in revenue year-over-year. It also announced new AI-enabled Oakley glasses in June. "We are leading the transformation of glasses as the next computing platform, one where AI, sensory tech and a data-rich healthcare infrastructure will converge to empower humans and unlock our full potential," said Milleri. The Ray-Ban glasses, equipped with camera, headphones and microphones, allow wearers to prompt Meta's AI without opening their phone by saying "Hey Meta". The company did not provide sales figures for the glasses or comment on the minority stake Meta has taken in it, which was disclosed earlier this month by Bloomberg.
