South African tennis star celebrated at Tennis Black List Awards

For his incredible achievements at collegiate level, Montsi received the College Player award at this year's edition of the Tennis Black List awards, presented in association with Dante Talent and held during the HSBC Championships at The Queen's Club, London on the 11th of June, supported by the LTA
He was one of two names to receive the award, alongside Nigerian and Florida International University student Barakat Oyinlomo Quadre.
'I'm truly honoured and grateful to accept this award,' said Montsi. 'To be recognised amongst many talented and hard-working student-athletes is truly humbling.
'To everyone that has helped me get to this point in my career, I'm truly grateful and I cannot thank you guys enough.
"I am truly grateful.'
Tennis Black List is the global celebration of Black and mixed black excellence across the game — spotlighting the unsung, the visionary and the next generation of changemakers.
Taking place in the run up to The Championships at Wimbledon, the Tennis Black List recognises the contributions of individuals and organisations from grassroots level up to the professional game in Britain and internationally.
It follows the example set by the successful and respected Football Black List, created by Leon Mann MBE and Rodney Hinds, and Rugby Black List which have demonstrated the power that celebrating black excellence can achieve in sport.
The event was an opportunity to inspire the next generation in the tennis community, with the commitment shown by the winners on and off the court.
Awards were handed out in ten categories across the evening at the ceremony, with several recipients present at the The Queen's Club.
Founders Anne-Marie Batson and Richard Sackey Addo said: 'This movement is about legacy. Tennis Black List is creating space for Black and mixed-black heritage excellence to be seen, honoured and remembered across all areas of tennis. We are building a global legacy that makes space for what is next.'
Launched in 2022; Tennis Black List is the only global platform dedicated to celebrating and documenting Black and mixed-black impact in tennis — from grassroots organisers to elite players. A movement rooted in recognition, legacy, and cultural celebration.

Jason Black on why he's pulling out all the stops as he targets success at Imokilly Mini Stages Rally

A stacked entry has been secured for the closed-road meeting which retains its popular format of two special stages run three times, with Armagh's Black the No.5 seed. Running just ahead of Black is the defending champion Rob Duggan in a Ford Escort Mk2, Darrian T90 GTR exponent James Stafford at two, David Moffett in a second rear-wheel-drive Toyota Starlet at three, and Johno Doogan in another Ford Escort Mk2 at four. Other standout names include former Sligo Pallets Border Rally Championship title holder Gary Kiernan, Michael Cahill, and Denis Hickey. All three are taking part in Ford Escort Mk2s. When it last ran in 2023, Black had climbed to second position with two stages remaining only for a spin — and stall — on the penultimate timed run test to put the brakes on his charge. Black is aiming to put the record straight tomorrow in his 2.5-litre powered rocket and hopes Saturday's shakedown stage can help get him up to speed and dialled in to the terrain. 'It can help get us back into the groove and allow us to go hard from the opening stage,' said Black, who was in Finland this week helping Toyota Gazoo Racing's Kalle Rovanpera and Jonne Halttunen prepare for their home round of the FIA World Rally Championship. 'That will be important as it has been more than 10 months since we did a proper stage rally — but we know we are more than capable of achieving a good result. The hope is that everything will click for us from the word go and we can steadily build on that,' he added. 'We really enjoyed our run out in Imokilly two years ago — we were lying second overall until we spun and lost about a minute in time when the car stalled and refused to restart. 'Once again, organisers have attracted another really strong entry, with anyone in the top 10 capable of coming away with top spot. If we can have a good steady run in Imokilly with no mistakes then hopefully we will be there, or thereabouts, come Sunday evening.'

Premier League striker enters F1 world by fronting shock bid for new race in Africa

Ex-Bolton star Marvin Sordell is leading Nigeria's efforts to host a Formula 1 race as they join the growing list of nations who want to strike a deal with the FIA Nigeria has become the latest African country to come forward and express a desire to host an F1 race with ex- Premier League frontman and Olympian Marvin Sordell fronting their bid. ‌ F1 currently visits every habitable continent bar Africa, where it hasn't been since the South African Grand Prix in 1993 at Kyalami. There is a growing desire to return however and South Africa, Morocco and Rwanda have all come forward and expressed an intention to bid.. ‌ Now Nigeria has joined with Opus Race Promotions eyeing a new circuit in the capital of Abuja, alongside a karting track, hotels and a motorsport museum. Former Burnley and Bolton forward Sordell, who also played for Great Britain at the Olympics in London, is co-chief executive of the promotional company ‌ They have been officially appointed to negotiate on behalf of the Nigerian government with F1 and the FIA. The bid has 'early support' from the Nigerian government, claims The Times. F1 chief executive Stefano Domenicali has been invited to visit Abuja to take a look at the project. He has admitted this season that talks are ongoing regarding a race in Africa but added: "I don't think we're going to have an outcome in the very short term." ‌ READ MORE: Lewis Hamilton admits 'refusing' Ferrari situation after crunch talks with bosses in Italy Shehu Dikko, chairman of the National Sports Commission in Nigeria, said: 'We are exploring all possibilities to bring Formula 1 to Nigeria as soon as practicable. 'Not just as a sporting event, but as a catalytic driver of tourism, infrastructure development, youth engagement, economy and indeed soft power for Nigeria. This vision aligns with the Renewed Hope and Shared Prosperity vision of our president, Bola Ahmed Tinubu.' South Africa was the last African nation to host a major global event across any sport when it had the World Cup back in 2010, which was won by Spain. Africa has never had the Olympics, but one of its countries does host the Africa Cup of Nations, so will have experience in putting on a major event. Lewis Hamilton has been among those constantly pushing for the sport to return to Africa and said last year: "We can't be adding races in other locations and continuing to ignore Africa, which the rest of the world just takes from. No one gives anything to Africa. "There's a huge amount of work needs to be done there. I think a lot of the world that haven't been there don't realise how beautiful the place is, how vast it is. And probably they don't even know what the countries are doing still to those places in terms of holding back."
