A rapid and severe decline in the air quality of the Delhi-NCR area has caused symptoms such as coughing, eye irritation, and difficulty breathing in many people. Overnight, the national capital's air quality drastically declined, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) reaching alarming levels.
According to SAFAR (System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research) data, the AQI was 249 at 10 AM, which is considered 'poor.' However, real-time AQI measurements exceeded 500 and entered the 'hazardous' zone in several Delhi-NCR areas.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) officials revealed that around 10 PM on Wednesday, dust-raising winds blew across the area, causing a significant change in the air quality. As a result of the powerful gusts that mixed up a lot of particulate matter, particularly PM10, the air pollution increased drastically.
Even while the trend is improving, the current state of the air is dangerous, particularly for children, the elderly, and people who already have respiratory disorders. Short-term symptoms, including eye discomfort, sore throat, and shortness of breath, can happen to even healthy people.

Steer clear of outdoor activities
Exercise, jogging, and walking can be detrimental when air quality drops to dangerous levels. This may exacerbate symptoms like wheezing, coughing, or dyspnea. While you should also keep windows and doors closed to protect outside air from entering your house, especially in the early morning and late evening, when pollution is at its worst.
Drink plenty of water
Air pollution can dry up the mucous membranes of your lungs, throat, and nose, leaving you more susceptible to infections and irritation. Water consumption keeps your body hydrated and aids in toxin removal.
Use Saline Nasal Spray
Saline nasal sprays are a mild yet efficient method of cleaning your nasal passages of allergies, pollutants, and irritants. This can soothe dry or irritable nasal tissues, lessen inflammation, and ease congestion. On days with significant pollution, it's especially beneficial for kids and anyone with sinus issues or allergic rhinitis.
Use Air Purifiers
During days with high pollution levels, air purifiers are crucial, particularly for vulnerable populations including the elderly, young children, and expectant mothers. These gadgets aid in removing indoor air pollutants and fine particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10). Make sure the purifier has a HEPA filter and put it in the room where pregnant women, kids, and the elderly spend the most time.
Do not disregard prolonged coughing, chest tightness, wheezing, exhaustion, or dyspnea experienced by you or your family members. These might indicate increasing asthma or respiratory discomfort.

New Delhi: Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has given the final nod to Delhi govt for cloud seeding in the city. However, the govt said that, based on suggestions from meteorologists, trials would now take place between Aug 30 and Sept 10, instead of the previously declared July 4 to 11. Delhi govt has also finalised a tentative flight plan with a map of the area over which the cloud seeding experiment will be conducted. The sorties have been planned over Alipur, Bawana, Rohini, Burari, Pavi Sadakpur and parts of Eastern Peripheral Expressway. A fully equipped aircraft, VT-IIT (Cessna 206-H), and a trained crew are ready to get deployed. The sorties will focus on areas most likely to support low-altitude cloud formation and high pollution retention, according to Delhi govt. Calling the move "historic", environment minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa said the DGCA nod made Delhi the first city in the country to get clearance for cloud seeding. "Cloud seeding has been spoken about for years but never implemented. For 10 years, it remained on paper. We took this up, coordinated with 13 departments, secured all approvals, including from DGCA, and now Delhi will finally witness cloud seeding between Aug 30 and Sept 10. As a result, IIT Kanpur, in consultation with Delhi govt, requested for the better suited window of Aug 30-Sept 10. Cloud seeding is a weather-modification measure that introduces substances into the air to aggregate and condense moisture particles into rain. In this technique, elements such as silver iodide (AgI) are released into the atmosphere to aid the formation of ice crystals that lead to rain. The Delhi cabinet, on May 7, approved a proposal to conduct five trials with a total project outlay of Rs 3.21 crore. The trials were initially to be carried out in late May and early June in collaboration with IIT Kanpur. Sirsa emphasised that the trials were part of a larger, data-driven strategy under Environment Action Plan 2025 to combat Delhi's poor air quality during the winter. "These trials, scheduled for late Aug and early Sept, are scientifically timed to gather data, which will be vital to calibrating and scaling up efforts during the Oct-Dec period, when Delhi typically faces increased AQI levels," he explained. Taking a dig at the previous administrations, Sirsa said, "While they only wrote letters for 10 years, we've secured clearances after conducting multiple marathon meetings and follow-ups with every required agency in just four months. The crucial southwest monsoon, which arrived earlier than usual this year, saw 8% surplus rainfall in Karnataka as a whole in June. However, some districts, especially those under the south-interior Karnataka (SIK) meteorological division, witnessed huge shortfalls, according to data from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Bengaluru. Most surplus Belagavi district in the north-interior Karnataka (NIK) meteorological subdivision received the most surplus rainfall with a 98% departure from normal, while on the other end of the spectrum was Bengaluru South district (formerly Ramanagara), with a -74% departure from normal. Among the districts under the SIK, Ballari, Chikkamagaluru, Chitradurga, Davangere, Kodagu, and Vijayanagara received excess rainfall. On the other hand, Bengaluru Urban and Rural, Chamarajanagar, Chickballapur, Hassan, Kolar, Mandya, Mysuru, Shivamogga, and Tumakuru recorded deficient rainfall, apart from Bengaluru South. All the districts under the coastal Karnataka subdivision — Dakshina Kannada, Uttara Kannada, and Udupi — received good rainfall in June. In NIK, apart from Belagavi, Dharwad saw excess rainfall, with a 46% departure from normal. Yadgir had the largest deficiency in this subdivision, with -45% departure from normal. Subdivision-wise, though, all three recorded normal to surplus rainfall: Coastal Karnataka had an 8% departure from normal, NIK 17%, and SIK 3%. Overall normal C.S. Patil, scientist and director, IMD Bengaluru, said, 'The south-interior Karnataka districts have received less rainfall, but overall the rainfall is normal for June. The western districts have received good rainfall, especially the hilly and coastal districts.' In line with the forecast for July for India, Mr. Patil said the rainfall was expected to increase overall for the State this month. The IMD has forecast that monsoon rainfall in July will be 'above normal,' while June-September will also be 6% above normal. Absence of El Nino Mrutunjay Mohapatra, Director-General, IMD, had said on Monday that the strong rainfall expected ahead is largely due to the absence of an El Nino pattern. The IMD had also said that the monsoon rainfall in June for India has been 8.9% more than usual, and except for eastern and northeastern India, most regions have seen surplus rains. South India, though, recorded a shortfall of about 3%.

New Delhi: A day after cool and cloudy weather, the city faced a humid day under clear skies. The heat index, or "feels like" temperature, soared to 45.8 degrees Celsius at 4 pm. Despite the monsoon's arrival, the city has yet to receive substantial rainfall, with the IMD predicting only light showers for the rest of the week. On Tuesday, Delhi recorded patchy, very light rainfall. Safdarjung logged 0.3 mm till 5.30 pm. Other stations reported minimal rain: Palam (0.4 mm), Ridge (0.2 mm), Ayanagar (0.2 mm), Mungeshpur (0.5 mm), and Mayur Vihar (0.5 mm). "The monsoon trough at mean sea level continues through Sri Ganganagar, Rohtak, Kanpur, Varanasi, a low-pressure area over Jharkhand and its surroundings, Digha, and southeastwards into the Bay of Bengal. It extends up to 0.9 km above mean sea level," said Mahesh Palawat, vice chairperson, Climate Change and Meteorology, Skymet. At Safdarjung, it reached 35.1 degrees Celsius —nearly 5 degrees Celsius higher than the previous day, but still two notches below normal. The minimum temperature was 25.2 degrees Celsius, slightly above Monday's 24 degrees Celsius. Humidity ranged from 98% to 64%, with winds blowing at 6 km/h from the northeast. Wednesday's maximum temperature is expected to remain between 33 degrees Celsius and 35 degrees Celsius. The air quality remained satisfactory, with the AQI recorded at 83, slightly higher than Monday's 65—both within the "satisfactory" category on the 0–500 scale. The southwest monsoon reached Delhi and parts of India a day earlier than expected, bringing light rain and drizzle on Sunday. For the 2025 season, the IMD forecasts normal rainfall in Delhi, within the 92–108% range of the long-period average. Rainfall within 19% excess or deficient of this range is considered normal. In 2024, Delhi recorded 516.9 mm of monsoon rainfall, which ended on Sept 29— about half of what was recorded during the monsoon in 2023.
